The survival thriller Above And Below is already shooting, and marks Idris Elba’s second outing as a director following 2018’s Yardie.
Idris Elba is clearly a man of many talents: acting, DJing, somehow always being incredibly stylish even if he was to wear a binbag. He’s also got one film under his belt as a director, 2018’s Yardie, a crime drama that five years on, remains a confident and well-told film that clearly showcases Elba’s potential as a filmmaker, should it be a route he chooses to develop.
That looks like it could be happening soon, given that he’s reportedly (according to Movieweb) signed on to co-direct Above And Below, a survival thriller that sees a trio of astronauts’ re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere go badly wrong. The film is said to be already shooting at Pinewood, although we don’t yet have any news regarding the film’s release schedule.

Actor Idris Elba made his feature directorial debut with the 2018 crime drama Yardie, and earlier this year we heard that he would be following that up with an action thriller called Infernus. That movie was supposed to get started filming in October, but appears to have been disrupted by the strikes. So while we wait to hear what’s going to happen with Infernus, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Elba is teaming up with Martin Owen (The Loneliest Boy in the World) to co-direct a survival thriller called Above the Below… and this one is already in production!
Above the Below started filming last week at Pinewood Studios, using two separate stages – including the studio’s underwater stage. In addition to co-directing, Elba also stars in the movie alongside Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (the After franchise).

“Succession” has experienced a long journey from under-the-radar HBO drama to buzzy 13-time Emmy winner. And now that the upcoming fourth season (launching Sunday on HBO and HBO Max) has been announced as the last, there’s only 10 more episodes left to wrap up everything that the show has been building toward. With such a large ensemble and abundant supporting players, there are a lot of ways it might all come to an end. But I think I’ve got things figured out. So ahead of tonight’s Season 4 premiere, I offer some obvious developments that could unfold along with some less predictable ones plot twists.
What old characters might return? Who will make it to the final episode? And will Kendall (Jeremy Strong) actually catch a break for once? Here is what my crystal ball says:
Amir Returns

HBO’s official trailer for Succession season four is full of plotting, backstabbing, and shifting loyalties. In other words, everything we’ve come to expect – and love – about the award-winning drama.
The trailer kicks off with Logan Roy insisting he’s accomplished so much that no one should question how he’s doing. That’s followed by Greg spying on Logan as he circles the trading floor, describing Logan’s actions to Tom on the phone as terrifyingly moseying. “It’s like if Santa Claus was a hitman,” says Greg.
The trailer also includes Kendall suggesting to his siblings that they need to fight Logan by partnering up with Sandi, Stewy, and Pierce – “death wrestling ogres.”
The final season stars Brian Cox as Logan Roy, Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, Sarah Snook as Siobhan Roy, Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy, and Alan Ruck as Connor Roy. Matthew Macfadyen plays Tom Wambsgans,...

Succession is heading to an end.
The hit HBO drama series will come to a conclusion with its fourth season.
Creator Jesse Armstrong broke the news in an interview with The New Yorker.
The series will return for season four on Sunday March 26. The season picks up when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrayed his adult kids including Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
He said, “There are a few different aspects. One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season.

HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys is not opposed to a possible ‘Succession’ spinoff, but argues that it “doesn’t seem like a natural thing.”
“I always say ‘never say never.’ When we started talking about doing a ‘Thrones’ prequel that was something that HBO had historically never done. I had some people internally saying, ‘This is crazy. What are you doing?’ That said, I think that there’s something about the universe that George created that lent itself to [spin-offs],” Bloys told Variety in an interview published Wednesday. “There’s a huge history, a lot of different families, a lot of different wars and battles. It doesn’t seem to me that there’s something in ‘Succession’ where you would go, ‘Let’s follow just this kid’ or whatever. It doesn’t seem like a natural thing to me. Exactly two months from now, all your dreams will come true. Assuming, of course, that your primary dream in life is to finally see the fallout of the devastating season 3 finale of "Succession." Beyond the united front that is Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin), what more could you possibly need? Thankfully, the news from HBO is that the wait is very nearly over. "Succession" is coming back with 10 new episodes of dysfunctional family drama starting Sunday, March 26.
Just over a year ago, the three Roy siblings — sans first pancake Connor (Alan Ruck) — made the very risky move to double-cross their father Logan (Brian Cox) in a desperate attempt to stop him from selling Waystar Royco. The high of seeing them all work together was very quickly squashed by their epic failure, all the more devastating because it was orchestrated by Shiv's husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen). So what comes next?...

HBO has released the first “Succession” Season 4 trailer, offering a look at how the Roy family children is handling the fallout from their bungled play on Logan at the end of Season 3. Additionally, HBO has announced that the fourth season will premiere on March 26, expectedly sliding in before the Emmy window of eligibility closes.
The show’s second and third seasons won the Emmy award for Best Drama Series, and that March date puts “Succession” as HBO’s next major drama series after the just-launched “The Last of Us” wraps up its first season.
Per the official logline, “Succession” Season 4’s plot is as follows: “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is complete.

One of the best shows to come out of HBO Max so far is "Station Eleven," the 10-episode mini-series that covers before, during, and after an apocalyptic pandemic. It's a show that jumps around to a whole bunch of different characters, many of them strangers to each other, and gradually shows us how they're all connected. But for director Jeremy Podeswa, who directed the second episode ("A Hawk from a Handsaw"), the ninth episode ("Dr. Chaudhary"), and the finale ("Unbroken Cycle"), the hardest part was getting the tone right.
"It's a delicate kind of thing because when you're dealing with emotional terrain, you can't exhaust the audience emotionally," Podeswa said. The finale in particular was a tough balancing act, as it featured a lot of emotional payoffs to storylines that have been going on for a while, and it was easy for one of them to get overshadowed by the others.

Shonda Rhimes already made her Netflix debut with Bridgerton, but her new true crime drama Inventing Anna — debuting this Friday; I’ve seen the first four episodes — feels even more Shonda-y than that. (She’s the series creator this time and wrote the pilot.) It’s a brisk, glamorous crime story that bears several of Rhimes’ hallmarks, along with several Scandal alums in the cast. It’s maybe too glamorous at times and does suffer a bit from streaming bloat, but it’s an engaging watch, powered by a ferociously weird, utterly fascinating lead performance from Julia Garner.

“I’ve been adrift in the strangest galaxy for a long time. But I’m safe now. I found it again. My home.” – Dr. Eleven
It’s not an original observation that many, if not most, good stories are about stories themselves. After all, they say “write about what you know” and what does a storyteller know if not the power of story?
Even with that in mind, however, HBO Max’s Station Eleven is really about stories. Station Eleven, which just premiered its brilliant finale on Jan. 13, began on Dec. 16 with the end of everything. Starting with a superflu that kills seemingly more than 99% of humanity, the series immediately confronts viewers with images of apocalyptic decay: empty train stations, cracked highways, and theaters drowned in jungle. The world of Station Eleven is unambiguously over.
And yet…those left carry on anyway, as...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Station Eleven,” Episodes 1-3.]
On Friday, December 17, HBO Max released the first three episodes of its dynamite limited series “Station Eleven.” The cast is populated largely with relative unknowns and a few familiar faces, including Gael García Bernal (“Mozart in the Jungle”) and Mackenzie Davis (“Halt and Catch Fire”). But in Episode 3, “Hurricane,” a supporting player takes center stage and serves as the catalyst for the core story the series aims to tell.
Miranda Carroll, embodied by a magnificent Danielle Deadwyler, is alone. Even when surrounded by people on a crowded bus, or riding the “L” train, or at a dinner party, or in her lover’s bed. There is always a distance and we, as the audience, have no idea why. In the vast majority of her screen time, even in conversations, Miranda is seen alone in shots, often with a significant buffer between herself and the frames’ edges.

Death is depicted differently in “Station Eleven.” TV typically relishes its bedside goodbyes, milking those lingering close-ups of the sick or dying for every last tear. Dystopian disaster stories tend to go one step further, honing in on gruesome fatalities or honoring last breaths from the battlefield, exhaled in the arms of their best friends. But in Patrick Somerville’s apocalyptic HBO Max limited series, characters rarely get that close. By physical distance or time itself, they’re removed from their loved ones’ sudden departure. They hear their partner’s last words over a voicemail. They learn of their family’s fate via a stranger’s text. Sometimes there is no confirmation. The implication is enough.

It took writer and director Aaron Sorkin fourteen years after the initial meeting with Steven Spielberg at his house on a Saturday back in 2006 to finally get “The Trial of the Chicago 7” made. And according to Sorkin, it finally came together thanks to former president Donald Trump.
“I don’t want to give Donald Trump credit for anything, but he’s the one who got Chicago seven made,” Sorkin tells moderator Jimmie Briggs at The Wrap’s screening series of the film. “Because he would have these protests, he would have these rallies, and there would be protesters at the rallies, and he would start getting nostalgic about the old days when they ‘Carry that guy out of here on a stretcher,’ ‘I’d like to beat the crap out of him,’ ‘Let’s punch him right in the face.'”

After an explosive teaser trailer during Sunday Night Football in which Aaron Sorkin declared “the whole world is watching,” Netflix has released a more sentimental and fuller look at the drama of “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” one in which Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman explains what he’s willing to give to keep the revolution going.

“My life just ended,” Kieran Culkin’s Roman Roy whimpers when his sister blurts out that she’s been chosen as the successor to their father’s empire in “Tern Haven,” the second season episode of HBO’s “Succession” that he has submitted for Emmy Awards consideration.
