This weekend brings the action-packed odyssey of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" to theaters for all to witness and enjoy. While the movie acts as a prequel to incredible "Mad Max: Fury Road," it does differ from George Miller's fast-paced franchise revival from 2015 by spanning years, even decades, as we learn the origins of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and see how her quest for vengeance against the maniacal Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) becomes tied up in the legacy of Mad Max and the Wasteland's wars.
But where "Furiosa" matches "Fury Road" is in the unbelievable, adrenaline-fueled vehicular mayhem and brutal combat between both humans and customized cars, trucks, and pretty anything with wheels. However, the prequel does enhance one particular element of the "Mad Max" franchise, and it's a detail that almost made it into "Fury Road."

The previous teasers for The Blackcoat's Daughter director Osgood Perkins' next feature, Longlegs, have been very effective in building an aura of unsettling dread around the mysterious horror flick, but this latest trailer really takes things to another level.
Though the movie is still playing things relatively close to the chest when it comes to revealing specific plot details, this footage does give us a little more to go on, as rookie FBI agent Lee Harker (It Follows star Maika Monroe) becomes obsessed with tracking down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families - and might just have supernatural abilities.
Harker has a personal connection to the killer (did she survive an earlier attack?), which leads her down an even darker path and into the world of the Occult.

When the trailer for "The Strangers: Chapter 1" first dropped, fans were introduced to a new couple in a new setting, but the same ol' scary masked killers wreaking havoc simply because "you were home." Well, in the case of the new film, it's because "you were here," but there's no need to split hairs. As is the case with the existing two films in the "Strangers" series, the chaos begins when a mysterious young woman shows up unannounced asking if Tamara is home, the ringing death knell of all "Strangers" stories. From there, all hell breaks loose, set wonderfully to "Trouble" by Cage the Elephant, with an expertly placed repeat of "Oohs" that turns this alternative/indie hit into something that sounds far more sinister.
With a shockingly low track record at the box office so far, "The Strangers: Chapter 1" has the potential to be the first true...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the fourth film in Sony’s action franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, had its first public screenings Wednesday night, and the first reactions have already hit social media.
At a fan screening at AMC The Grove 14 in Los Angeles, Smith and Lawrence made a surprise appearance. There were also screenings in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
The plot to Bad Boys 4 is driven by corruption within the Miami Pd, with Captain Conrad Howard (Joe Pantoliano) accused of working with the drug cartels for years. Detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) put together a team to clear Howard’s name but become outlaws in the process.
The cast also includes Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Eric Dane and Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd. Franchise regulars Joe Pantoliano as Captain Conrad Howard and John Salley as Fletcher also return.

It's rare to watch an actor's star rise in real-time, but that is precisely what is happening with Anya Taylor-Joy.
The actress has nary a single project in her resume that wasn't loved by critics and audiences alike, save for a big-budget script or two.
With barely an entire decade under her belt, Anya Taylor-Joy already has thirty-nine nominations, including fifteen wins, three of which are a Golden Globe, a Critic's Choice Aware, and a Screen Actor's Guild award.
Not too bad, considering she's not even thirty yet. She's made some significant moves and has quickly solidified herself as one of Hollywood's most talented young actors.
From protecting the Mushroom Kingdom to questionable fine dining, Anya Taylor-Joy has embarked on various roles. Whether it's just her voice or a full view of her stealing every scene with her piercing gaze, the actress has the skill of someone with decades of experience.

The first reactions to Longlegs were recently shared on social media, and after watching the full trailer for Osgood Perkins' (The Blackcoat's Daughter) latest project, it's easy to see why it's being hailed as one of the scariest movies of the year.

Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.
Check out some of the early reviews of Longlegs below:
I was so lucky to see #Longlegs, and no exaggeration: it could be the best horror film of ‘24. Oz Perkins can really get under my skin; this is his masterpiece. Monroe gives a fabulously unique lead performance, and Cage? Nightmarish. Maybe the scariest 1st 10 mins, ever. pic.twitter.com/ImMEDDxGXi

Horror fans have been keeping a very close eye on director Osgood Perkins' next project, and the first social media reactions for the mysterious Longlegs are in.
These reactions are highly positive, and it sounds like the movie is a genuinely disturbing, terrifying experience.
Though Longlegs definitely seems to be keeping its biggest secrets firmly under wraps for the time being (and the teasers are all the better for it), we do know that the plot revolves around a rookie FBI agent (It Follows star Maika Monroe) attempting to track down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families.
Cage's character has largely been kept out of the marketing, aside from one unsettling shot.
Check out the social media posts below, and keep an eye out for a new trailer.

The time has come for audiences to start witnessing George Miller’s newest action epic to see if it takes them to Valhalla or leaves them scrounging for food in the desert. The latest installment of the Mad Max saga spins off from Mad Max: Fury Road and sees Anya Taylor-Joy taking up the role from Charlize Theron. It had recently been confirmed that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will also be the franchise’s longest film, with the Cannes Film Festival website confirming its 2 hour and 28 minute runtime. While that means the film is significantly longer (by a half hour) than Fury Road, it’s worth noting that this prequel tells a truly epic tale that takes place over decades. Fury Road only took place over two days.

Big news for the "They don't make 'em like they used to" crowd: They just did and, as those who were paying attention know, it's been playing in theaters nationwide for weeks now. "Love Lies Bleeding" lies at the crossroads between a throwback '80s noir and a queer romance that's unabashedly of its time, with both aspects coming together to create an intoxicating mix that's mighty difficult to resist. Starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian as a pair of star-crossed lovers who wind up right in the crosshairs of a local crime lord, director Rose Glass' iron-pumping, steroid-injecting, and thoroughly sweat-dripping thriller is one of those movies that practically leaps off the screen and swallows audiences up in the grime and muck of its world.

Richard Donner's "The Omen" is one of the most revered horror classics of all time. Now, Disney's 20th Century Studios is bridging the franchise back from the dead for a prequel in the form of "The First Omen." Horror has been on an incredible hot streak at the box office over the last couple of years, and Disney is the best in the business at milking franchises for all they're worth. So, will this R-rated franchise revival scare up enough to make it a hit when it opens next weekend?
Director Arkasha Stevenson's horror prequel is currently expected to pull in between $8 and $13 million on its opening weekend, per Box Office Pro. It will be opening directly against Dev Patel's action flick "Monkey Man," which has its sights set on a debut between $16 and $25 million. After a stellar TV run with "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," which finally gave us a good human story within the "Godzilla" mythos, and an unprecedented Oscar victory for "Godzilla Minus One," Godzilla has returned to the big screen with another team-up between Godzilla and King Kong.
Part of what makes "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" interesting and unique among the MonsterVerse movies is its team-up of villains, Shimo and Skar King. They essentially serve as reflections of Godzilla and Kong, the former being a lizard-like kaiju with an energy beam, and the latter being a giant ape.
Though Shimo is barely even a character, Skar King is a fantastic addition to the MonsterVerse — a violent and evil despot like Koba in "Planet of the Apes," with a badass kaiju spine he uses as a chain-weapon and as a way to control Shimo.

Moviegoers have been madly in love with King Kong ever since Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack unleashed him onto the big screen in 1933, and he's only gotten more lovable over the years. Some might argue that's a problem. He is, after all, a monstrously large gorilla who isn't above squashing dozens upon dozens of human beings if need be. But in almost every case, it's the humans who go looking for trouble, straying into Kong's territory and arrogantly trying to cage him for their own greedy interests. Put yourself in the big guy's position, and you'd probably get smash-happy, too.
Kong might be the most relatable kaiju out there. He's eminently susceptible to heartbreak and bleeds red just like the rest of us. When he hurts, we hurt, even when... no, especially when he gets a toothache.

Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong" was one of 2021's most pleasant blockbuster surprises, primarily because it represented a successful step up in filmmaking scale for the very talented Adam Wingard. More than a few eyebrows arched when the director, best known for his pulpy (and very R-rated) action and horror flicks, was tapped to referee the long-awaited MonsterVerse throwdown, but he took to the genre with gleeful ease. And, really, why wouldn't he? We were all kids once. The opportunity to make a mega-budget Godzilla and King Kong movie in one fell swoop is something many of us dreamed of as rambunctious eight-year-olds.

In Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong," the two Titans clash viciously and almost push one another to the brink of destruction. However, the rise of a new threat, Mechagodzilla (possessed by King Ghidorah's consciousness), prompts the two to cooperate and take down their common enemy. Although Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways after this event, is this temporary truce meant to last? This question leads us directly into "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," in which Wingard has returned to orchestrate a memorable showdown between the colossal Titans amidst an unknown threat poised to destroy the world as we know it. While a classic premise for a creature feature, it is a story that fans of the MonsterVerse are eager to experience, especially with the promise of a brand new antagonist lurking in the shadows.

From the late 1960s to the 1970s, religious horror cinema reigned. Free of the censorious Hays Code, Hollywood could be transgressive again. Americans were generally more Christian 50 years ago than they are today, so scary movies where the horror literally comes from the Devil? Those struck right at the heart of the public.

The history of cinema is littered with weird movies. For certain viewers these are special experiences, be it something for a very specific type of person to enjoy, or more of a challenge to be endured. It's difficult for me to say what camp "Sasquatch Sunset" falls into (that's probably for the individual to decide), but I can say with the utmost confidence that it is far and away the weirdest movie of 2024 thus far. If anything tops it before year's end, it's going to be an all-timer of an odd year at the movies. That much is certain.
Not to give the whole thing away here, as it's worth the experience for those who are game for something wildly offbeat, but we're talking about a movie with no human characters, lots of graphically gross moments, explicit Sasquatch sex, zero dialogue, and no subtitles to relay what is being communicated.

Sam Rockwell Paid Tribute To Oscar Winner Robert Downey Jr. With An Amazing Tropic Thunder Reference
"There are actors, and then there are actors who don't drop characters until the DVD commentary."
This is how 2017 Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell opened his impassioned speech in honor of Best Supporting Actor nominee, Robert Downey Jr. The man who gave us a decade of playing Tony Stark in Marvel's "Iron Man" films would go on to take home the statue, his first win after previous nominations for "Chaplin" and his controversial performance in "Tropic Thunder." The former is a role that plenty of film pundits have claimed should have brought Rdj his first Oscar all the way back in 1992, while the latter nomination is still heavily debated considering Rdj's character was an actor who underwent a dangerous and racist procedure to darken his skin in order to play a Black character.

While Japanese actor cum martial artist Hiroyuki Sanada has been in multiple masterpieces before, probably none comes as close to the epic superhit dropping-soon series Shōgun. One of the most anticipated series of perhaps the entire decade, it is a historical drama set in the year 1600, based on the same name novel from 1975 by James Clavell.

I have a confession to make: For much of my teenage years, I identified as what can only be described as a Sasquatch truther. I was radicalized by that infamous Zapruder-like footage of a supposed Bigfoot out for a casual stroll in 1967 and attempted to chase that high ever since. I loved watching all those goofball Discovery Channel specials where supposedly reputable people trekked into the forests of the Pacific Northwest, set up cameras in areas rumored to host a high number of Bigfoot sightings, knocked pieces of wood together to attract the big guy (or gal!), and just waited around for the urban legend to just, I don't know, show itself. The aughts were a strange and confusing time, folks.
All of that is to say that this movie we're about to talk about just might be the very definition of "Up my alley." After making waves during its...

I was about seven years old the first time I saw her — a leather-clad woman with half of a shaved head and mountains of muscle over her 5'6" frame. My eyes would be engrossed the second she appeared on screen, and despite living in an affirming household, I felt like there was something weird or wrong about my fixation. Her name was Luna Vachon (real name Gertrude Vachon), a professional wrestler who perfectly encapsulated the glamour and pageantry of the WWF (now WWE), without ever sacrificing God-like strength and muscle tone. American culture has a weird relationship with visibly strong women, but the tides have been changing over the last five years. Oh, so you thought you could move into a brand-new house while in the midst of personal upheaval, flout all the rules of conventional horror wisdom by taking solo swims in the creepy backyard swimming pool at night, and not get subjected to intense and possibly supernatural phenomena? Ones that may or may not represent a metaphor for anything up to and including trauma, loss, and the monkey's paw of getting what we think we want the most? Is it your first day on Planet Earth or something??
Alright, I suppose we can't hold it against the fictional characters of "Night Swim" for not knowing that they were in a horror movie the entire time, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating that they didn't see all those scares coming. 2023 was a surprisingly great year for several movie genres, but action fans in particular had a bounty of terrific options to choose from. When it came time for a few of the /Film writers and editors to get together and rank our favorites, our individual lists were overflowing with great titles. But in accordance with the unwritten laws/demands of the Internet, we were forced to make some tough decisions, whittle our choices down to a collective ten films, and rank them accordingly.
As is often the case, the movies that didn't make this list could easily comprise an impressive list of their own. When the inventive and propulsive "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the energetic and comedic "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," the brutal and pulpy "Sisu," the touching and hilarious "Polite Society," and the moody and subversive "The Killer" get relegated to honorable mentions, it becomes clear how...

Ari Aster's 2018 film "Hereditary" contains a great deal of shadow-lurking, a scene of spontaneous human combustion, several decapitations, allusions to demonic powers, and at least one Satanic cult. However, if one were to ask a "Hereditary" fan about the film, they would mention Toni Collette's amazing performance before any of the above elements. They will also likely recall the scenes of sheer panic, the harrowing sense of guilt, and the unnerving presence of actor Milly Shapiro as the scary young Charlie. This is, of course, the way Aster wanted it. "Hereditary" may have supernatural elements, but it is, first and foremost, a story about the breakdown of the family unit. It's about intergenerational trauma and how our most grievous pains are handed directly to us by our mothers. It's a nightmare, but more in the Freudian sense.

"Mr. President, I feel I have blood on my hands," said J. Robert Oppenheimer to President Harry Truman in 1945 during a fateful meeting at the Oval Office, according to a description of their encounter in "American Prometheus." Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" stages this event to dramatic effect, with Truman (Gary Oldman) calling the theoretical physicist a "crybaby" after the latter addresses the ethical quandaries of dropping the world's first atomic weapon. This moment is memorable; it underlines the government's eagerness to literally weaponize nuclear weapons development projects while also zooming in on Oppenheimer's accumulating guilt and despair.

Where would we be without the good old director's commentary? We certainly wouldn't have Ben Affleck relentlessly mocking "Armageddon" or David Fincher relentlessly mocking Ben Affleck in the "Gone Girl" commentary. I wouldn't have wasted countless hours as a teen learning every intricate detail of how each individual episode of "The Simpsons" came to together, and we wouldn't have had the feature-length apology that was Joel Schumacher's director's commentary for "Batman & Robin."
Of course, these commentary tracks aren't just arenas for filmmakers to make fun of actors and apologize for their blunders. Fincher's commentaries are frequently insightful in a way that a straightforward interview couldn't be. Likewise, Adam McKay has turned the commentary itself into an artform, putting almost as much care into constructing his elaborate audio tracks as he does his films.

For a holiday slasher that took 16 years to officially get off the ground, Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" may wind up having perfect timing (read /Film's glowing review here). Based on the faux trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 double-bill exploitation experiment, "Grindhouse," audiences that were perplexed back then may be ready to embrace a gory, fully self-aware whodunnit with an axe-wielding killer pilgrim as its centerpiece.
Like a perfectly cooked turducken, "Thanksgiving" is a horror movie, a murder mystery, and a teen dramedy all rolled into one. Set in Plymouth, Massachusetts (where else?), it's also a mostly funny send-up of corporate greed and so-called "Massholes" who don't take too kindly to being picked off one by one in increasingly gruesome fashions. (One almost expects cameos from Boston brats Sully (Jimmy Fallon) and Zazu (Rachel Dratch) during the opening scene depicting a calamitous Black Friday riot.)

There isn't a more ardent devotee to the horror genre working in Hollywood today than Eli Roth. This is especially true of 1980s horror. Born in 1972, Roth is one of many Gen Xers who raided their local video stores horror shelves, renting just about anything in the hopes they might stumble across an unexpected classic (or at least something with loads of gore).
The advent of the home video era also coincided with the rise of the slasher film craze. Film critics generally abhorred this subgenre (Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert actively crusaded against them in the '80s like Evangelical Christians decrying the Satanic influence of heavy metal music), which, for movie-mad adolescents, only made them cooler. Most of us were savvy enough even then to know we were watching trash, but when the formula worked and the kills were inventive, these flicks could be awfully satisfying (there's a...

With the fall festival circuit firmly in the rearview mirror, many of the most anticipated films of the 2023 fall season have already screened for critics. One of the last films that remained unseen was “The Iron Claw,” Sean Durkin’s new A24 sports drama that tells the story of the Von Erich wrestling family. The film, which stars Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich and Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, premiered in Dallas on Wednesday before screening for critics in Los Angeles on Sunday. And early reactions suggest that A24 could have another hit on its hands.
“The Iron Claw” documents the rapid rise to wrestling superstardom and even quicker fall toward tragedy that befell the Von Erich family. After family patriarch Fritz Von Erich (played by Holt McCallany in the film) built a following as a villainous heel on the wrestling circuit, his sons entered the business in quick succession.

Spoiler alert: this ranking of every movie in the "Exorcist" series concludes with the first film, William Friedkin's 1973 masterpiece about demonic possession and the battle between good and evil, in the top position. Sorry. There was no other way. And it wasn't even close. When the /Film horror braintrust determined the order, it was a runaway. Not a contest. 50 years after it shocked audiences around the world in its initial release, the film remains a triumph of not just horror cinema, but cinema in general. Hundreds of movies have chased it. Very few have even come close to matching it. It's one of the best movies ever made.
But the rest of the series? That's where the debate gets interesting. "The Exorcist" was followed by two divisive initial sequels, both of which have developed a following over the decades. And then there were the two (!) prequels, each of which...

"Five Nights At Freddy's" just premiered in theaters and on Peacock, and the adaptation of a much-loved horror video game is already garnering strong reactions from fans and critics alike. While some folks flocking to theaters have been waiting nearly a decade to see the animatronic antics of Freddy Fazbear and his murderous friends on screen, newcomers to the franchise are also getting the chance to see what the fuss (or should I say fuzz?) is all about.
Though the "Five Nights At Freddy's" game franchise created by Scott Cawthon features nine video games and assorted spinoffs and the complex lore to match, the new movie introduces the universe with a seemingly simple premise. Kenneth Branagh is back once again as Detective Hercule Poirot in a brand new Agatha Christie adaptation. "A Haunting in Venice" is the third interpretation of Christie's work by Branagh in the past several years, with the actor and director taking on a lesser-known book by the author for a more overtly horror-driven tale. With a stacked A-list cast that includes the likes of Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Michelle Yeoh, this is one of the most star-studded films of the fall season.
Following 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," this latest Poirot mystery is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. Far be it from me, a lowly film journalist, to tell the most powerful and exorbitantly rich decisionmakers in all of Hollywood what to do. But I'd like to think I can speak for anyone with even a modicum of common sense that it's generally not great to deceptively compel hordes of background actors and extras into giving away the rights to using their likenesses however these studios see fit. That would remain true at the best of times, of course, but that ought to go double for a period when the industry knew that SAG-AFTRA (the guild representing the majority of working actors) would imminently have to negotiate a new deal with the studios, represented by the AMPTP.

Add Disney+ and Hulu to the list of streamers whose complete slate of original shows and films is no longer guaranteed to be there the next time you go looking for it. According to Vulture, the Disney-owned streamers are set to remove some titles from their catalog as soon as next week. The list of titles includes the high-budget "Willow" sequel series, the Danny Devito-led animated series "Little Demon," and the highly-anticipated yet swiftly canceled comic adaptation, "Y: The Last Man," among others.
While this content purge follows in the footsteps of Warner Bros Discovery's much-criticized decision to make select titles disappear from streaming for tax reasons last year, Vulture reports that the Disney+ and Hulu titles are likely set to resurface elsewhere — a guarantee that HBO Max was slow to make when its content started to disappear. This article spoils a great joke from "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Proceed with caution!
After "Game of Thrones" inspired a wave of fantasy projects seeking to replicate the tone of HBO's dark, gritty, depressingly violent fantasy series, it's almost surprising when we get a new fantasy TV show or film that remembers you can have fun with the genre. This is why the scene where the harfoots sing a little walking song in "The Rings of Power" is so special and heartfelt; why "The Dragon Prince" bringing epic fantasy to young audiences is so important; and why "The Legend of Vox Machina" capturing the chaos and silly energy of tabletop RPG sessions makes for such an enjoyable experience.

A lot of the appeal of "Dungeons & Dragons" rests upon having a dynamic cast of characters. If you are playing in a D&d campaign and all of your characters have the same personality or skill set, it's going to get boring really fast. It's also important to create characters that maybe don't reflect your personal attributes or desires. After all, it's a role-playing game. What fun is it to play someone just like you?
This same appeal is also at the center of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," the roleplaying game's first big screen venture in over twenty years. In keeping with universal campaign tradition, it features a ragtag group of adventurers as they embark on a seemingly impossible mission. The head of this group is the thieving bard Edgin (Chris Pine), whose relentless optimism may or may not get him into trouble. /Film's Bill Bria recently...

James Cameron is a filmmaker who is constantly pushing the boundaries of special effects for the best visual experience possible. A project like "Avatar," which takes place on an alien planet, could have only come to life through innovation, and it was a massive success. With "The Way of Water," Cameron finally gets to show off the spectacular underwater world of Pandora, having utilized groundbreaking technology that was able to motion capture performances while actors were doused in the drink. How The Lord Of The Rings VFX Team Realized Andy Serkis Was Their Most Valuable Resource [Exclusive]
Believe it or not, James Cameron's wallet has yet to create real aliens. He kitbashed his own fleet of mechanical sea beasts, but that's not quite the same thing. No, tragically, "Avatar: The Way of Water" is just a bunch of human beings in silly suits pretending to be giant blue space people. Once you get over the initial disappointment that Na'vi don't exist ( ... yet), though, you begin to appreciate just how incredible the technology behind "The Way of Water" is.
James Cameron's VFX team manages to catch every subtle gesture and every micro-expression provided by the actors as they bring Pandora to life. In 2022, motion capture performances are commonplace. It's still technically impressive but the novel veneer has dulled, so it's hard to believe that the entire medium really only kicked off about two decades ago.

In 1993, Rocky Morton's and Annabel Jankel's "Super Mario Bros." was released in theaters to terrible reviews and widespread derision. Many audiences at the time could be heard rejecting the film out of hand, as it invented its own, bizarre premise wholly separate from the games on which it was based. The games dealt hallucinatory adventure/fantasy scenarios about plumbers trekking across a land lousy with hammer-throwing turtles and power-granting mushrooms to rescue a princess that had been kidnapped by a fire-breathing dragon.
The film, in contrast, posited that when Earth was struck by the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, it created two parallel Earths. One Earth was the familiar realm where humans evolved from apes. The other was a world where dinosaurs survived and continued to evolve into human-looking creatures. Outside of "Die Hard," the filmography of Shane Black, and also the masterpiece that is "Reindeer Games," Christmas action movies are few and far between, which often leads us to the tired debate of whether "Die Hard" even counts. Thankfully, director Tommy Wirkola is about to unleash a very welcome present to even things out this year with "Violent Night." A murderous Santa Clause is nothing new when you take into account movies like "Christmas Evil" or "Silent Night, Deadly Night." Where this film differs, however, is that David Harbour's Santa is taking names, not due to his own homicidal rage, but because he's saving a family from a group of mercenaries taking them hostage.
Between "Black Widow" and "Hellboy," Harbour seems to have made a name for himself playing red-suited characters kicking butt. The color suits him well. It's one thing to imagine the "Stranger Things" star going...

Every family has their stable of Christmas movies that have to be watched during the month of December. New additions like "Spirited" starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell attempt to find a way into that annual rotation by updating "A Christmas Carol" and other holiday mainstays, which is a mild form of cheating as far as I'm concerned. Tried and true classics like "White Christmas" and "It's a Wonderful Life" may seem a little outdated, so take no shame in updating the Christmas movie list with "Love Actually" and "Die Hard", or even scarier entries like "Rare Exports" and "Krampus."
The big question for the new holiday action comedy "Violent Night" is whether or not an R-rated, butt-kicking Santa Claus (David Harbour) will end up being worthy of a re-watch each year. In any case, director Tommy Wirkola hopes that his version of a Christmas classic can deliver some crowd-pleasing...

Every year brings the annual rewatches of my holiday favorites and an occasional new one, and it's looking increasingly likely that "Violent Night" may become one of them. I'll happily bawl over the emotional catharsis of "It's a Wonderful Life," but sometimes the reason for the season calls for a horror zombie musical ("Anna and the Apocalypse") or a visit from German folklore ("Krampus"). 2022's "Violent Night" appears to fixate quite nicely in the middle, featuring "Stranger Things" star David Harbour as he doles out some bloody season's beatings in the name of Christmas. Sometimes all you need is a movie that envisions Santa Claus going all John McClane in order to protect a good kid from a group of mercenaries on Christmas Eve. The cherry on top is that this yuletide beatdown comes from director Tommy Wirkola, the filmmaker behind "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" and the "Dead Snow" series.

Most holiday seasons, we get some sort of theatrically-released Christmas movie that aims to not only succeed in the moment, but become something that can endure annually for years to come. It feels like it's been a while since we've had a bonafide holiday classic, but "Violent Night" feels like it could turn the tide. What's not to love about the idea of "Stranger Things" favorite David Harbour as an R-rated Santa Claus who isn't afraid to take out some bad guys? Speaking of those bad guys, it's not just going to be one man at the top with nameless, faceless henchmen. All of the bad guys are going to have something to do here.
This was important to director Tommy Wirkola, the man responsible for bringing the film to life. /Film's own Bill Bria recently spoke to the filmmaker about his latest effort, and the subject of the henchmen came up.

The upcoming action comedy "Violent Night" starring David Harbour ("Stranger Things") is just about to hit our stockings. This is no regular Christmas movie, in case you didn't get that from the title. On Christmas Eve, a bunch of mercenaries break into the house of a wealthy family and take everyone hostage. Who comes to the rescue? None other than Santa Claus (Harbour) himself. He's been bringing presents to good little kids throughout the centuries, but he's gotten a bit jaded. All these little rug rats want nowadays is cash.
As it turns out, Santa isn't just a jolly old elf who's a little over it all. He's a complete badass! You do not upset the cutest little kid ever (Leah Brady) and get off scot-free. In "Violent Night," David Harbour plays a Santa Claus who isn't afraid to knock back a beer or head-butt someone who's naughty. If that doesn't sell itself as a movie premise, I don't know what would. The "Stranger Things" star has hidden his face under red demon makeup before (see: "Hellboy"), but in "Violent Night," Harbour is donning a red stocking cap and grey beard, in service of "seasons beatings." And just because it's an action comedy doesn't mean he went into the role of Santa without doing some research.
Santa Claus as we know him has a long history dating back at least 200 years, when the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (now commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas") was published.
