The word “visionary” gets tossed around pretty easily in show business, too often applied to creators who appealed to a broad market more than they broke new ground. But few would disagree that the word is an apt descriptor for Bryan Fuller. Not only did Fuller work on cult hits like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Heroes, but he also created some beloved oddballs, including the sweetly macabre Pushing Daisies and Hannibal, the audacious adaptation of Thomas Harris’s novels. Despite the idiosyncratic nature of his work, Fuller has established himself as a consummate collaborator, as demonstrated by his tendency to work with actors such as Lee Pace and Caroline Dhavernas across several projects.
But with the casting news about Fuller’s upcoming feature film directing debut Dust Bunny, the creator will finally be reuniting with his best collaborator, the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. Together with Fuller, Mikkelsen already did the impossible,...

As a horror aficionado and leader of TV’s horror renaissance, Bryan Fuller appreciates the art of subtext. The prolific writer and producer’s new Shudder docuseries, “Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror,” makes a strong case for horror’s queer origins, finding hints of homoeroticism in almost every corner of the genre. Fuller brings an appreciation of queer subtext to all of his work, as fans of “Hannibal” know all too well.
The psychological thriller series, which ran for three seasons from 2013-2015 on NBC, starred Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy as serial killer Hannibal Lecter and criminal profiler Will Graham, respectively. With such highly skilled actors, the tension between the characters was ripe. Last year, Mikkelsen shared that he and Dancy shot a few takes where they kissed, but Fuller thought it would be too “obvious.” As fans held out hope for some confirmation of their suspicions that never came,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?
E. Oliver Whitney, Screencrush.com, @cinemabite
Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...

Caroline Dhavernas, star of Lifetime’s Mary Kills People, has always been a fan of the unusual.
The Canadian actress -- who sunk her teeth into characters like Jaye Tyler on the short-lived whimsical dramedy Wonderfalls and Dr. Alana Bloom on the poetic psychological horror-thriller Hannibal -- is eagerly awaiting Showtime’s upcoming Twin Peaks revival. “I can’t wait,” the 38-year-old exclaims giddily over the phone during an early morning chat in April. “I’m beside myself. I don’t understand why I’m not a part of that show.”
Study Dhavernas’ resume and you’ll see why. As the aforementioned roles indicate (both notably with frequent collaborator Bryan Fuller, whose next project is Starz's American Gods adaptation), the Montreal, Quebec native has a knack for leaning into the quirky, the peculiar and the just plain weird -- and she’s absolutely Ok with that.

Hannibal's central love story draws to a magnificent close in its season three finale. Here's Laura's review of The Wrath Of The Lamb...
This review contains spoilers.
3.13 The Wrath Of The Lamb
There are some who want to label Hannibal a love story. And maybe they are right about that. But inevitably, they want to add the proviso “Not your average love story” or some other qualifying statement. And that’s where I have to part company.
When we talk about love stories, we inevitably mean stories about falling in love, those first twinges of longing that build into a need that seems to overwhelm both parties. We almost never mean stories about loving someone. The two are not the same, and difference is pretty basic. In the film Creator (1985), Peter O’Toole’s Dr. Harry Wolper gives us the “Love Formula.” Count the number of times in a...

Tonight, Bryan Fuller and company gave us the end of "Hannibal" as we know it. Even if the money and logistics can ever be worked out for some kind of movie or miniseries featuring Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, and this creative team, the show's time as an ongoing TV series is done, and it ended in a way that functions as a conclusion to the story, even if it's one that may outrage some fans. (My finale review is here.) Earlier this week, I spoke with Fuller about that ending, potential ways he could continue the franchise, the challenges of finally doing a direct adaptation of "Red Dragon," and a lot more — including me having a very different interpretation of the post-credits scene than what Fuller intended — coming up just as soon as you take the key from around my neck... At what point in the season did you realize...

This week's Hannibal breaks season 3's mould by favouring action over dialogue...

3.5 Contorno
We often observe that it doesn’t matter what people says about themselves, it’s what they do that reveals who they really are. But while generally true, it is the work of profilers, and Will Graham specifically, to look at the actions of (usually) unspeaking killers and give them that voice: this is my design and my why.
This is how a show that is theoretically about serial killing became—as a commenter pointed out a couple weeks ago—less violent than Game Of Thrones, and more conversational. Because if you want to get to the why, there’s only so far that the what of the crime can get you (CSI: Fill-in-the-Blank to the contrary). And when you are delving into a why as labyrinthine as Hannibal’s, it’s going...

Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: NBC Wait... so she really did throw him from the trainc The fifth episode of this third season of "Hannibal", titled "Contorno", was a weird one for me. For one I appreciate the fact we're all caught up, but at the same time I don't feel as if aspects of what we're dealing with entirely work. That said, once Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) gets rolling it's impossible to say anything negative about this show, as you'd much rather just sit back and watch. This week's episode begins with Will (Hugh Dancy) and Chiyo (Tao Okamoto) heading to Florence to hunt Hannibal. Their scenes are overly dramatic and begin spelling things out we are already more than aware of. Chiyo says to Will, "If you don't kill him, you are worried you are going to become him." Is anyone not clear on this yetc In fact, scratch that,...

3.4 Aperitivo
It’s taken four episodes, but we’ve finally, finally been given a sense of what happened in the aftermath of Lecter’s going-away party at the end of last season. But this week’s Aperitivo does much more than that: it changes the entire landscape of Hannibal.
When Jack wakes up, he is surprised, as are we—he because he never expected to and we because he does so next to Bella who we’d all but forgotten. Which is hardly fair since Gina Torres’ character has been one of the more interesting women on the show. In the fairly straightforward structure of this episode—each character who survived Hannibal’s manipulations last season is addressed both individually and how his or her story meaningfully overlaps...

Gina Torres and Lawrence Fishburne in "Hannibal"Photo: Brooke Palmer / NBC It felt like tonight's episode of "Hannibal" would have been better served as the first or second episode in the season, not the fourth as most everything it covered was pretty much well established to this point. It wasn't a bad episode by any means, it merely seemed to stop the season in its tracks. Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: Brooke Palmer / NBC I can't be certain on this, but was last week's episode the first episode of "Hannibal" to not include someone's deathc I only ask because this week's episode, titled "Secondo" made up for that missing aspect of last week's episode as not one, but two characters find themselves on the wrong side of pointy objects. This marks the third episode of this third season to be directed by Vincenzo Natali and he's toned down his visual flair here, though he's still fond of reflections, be they in knives or liquid, using them to move from one scene to the next. Though, can we all agree the best scene transition was from the cutting of a bird's leg to the chopping of a human hand as Hannibal prepares the forearm of the late professor Sogliato (Rinaldo Rocco) into a delectable carpaccio(c) to...

Bryan Fuller is a master of sleight of hand, as this thrilling episode of Hannibal season 3 shows...
This review contains spoilers.
3.2 Primavera
Boy, do I love good sleight-of-hand. And this week’s Primavera did it extremely well. But back to that in a moment.
We had been promised in PR materials that we’d learn the fate of those Hannibal butchered back in Baltimore: Jack, Alana, Will, and Abigail. But of course, it would have been unlike the patient Fuller to actually let spill all the secrets at once, so for now, narratively speaking, the status of Jack and Alana remains a mystery. Although, since we know both Lawrence Fishburne and Caroline Dhavernas are regulars this third season, it’s doubtful that either is dead—though Primavera does suggest an interesting alternate possibility for the return of Alana’s character. But what we do know is that Will and Abigail survived the attack.

Hannibal is back with a glorious new episode. Here's Laura's review of Antipasto...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 Antipasto
Just like every other devotee to Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal, I’ve spent the 12+ months since its last episode trying to convince everyone I know to watch the show. The reasons for this are many.
First, frankly, it is, quite simply, an amazing piece of cinema. Yes, I know it’s on television, but trust me, it might as well be on the silver screen at a film festival for the level of auteuritsm on display. If you aren’t watching, you’re missing out.
Second, many people don’t watch because they are convinced that the show is nothing but an excuse to bring more violence to television. And I am not going to pretend that the show isn’t violent. The season finale last year was nothing less than...

Previously on Hannibal ... At the end of Hannibal’s sensationally sordid season-two finale, “Mizumono,” the good Doctor Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) left his best friend Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) filleted and bleeding on the floor; Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) nursing a punctured neck in the pantry; Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) shattered on the sidewalk; and the thought-to-be-dead Abigail Hobbs (Kacey Rohl), whose purported death has haunted Will incessantly, split from ear to ear. Series creator Bryan Fuller was unsure if Hannibal would be picked up for a third season — its ratings are subpar, to put it kindly — so he and Steve Lightfoot (one of the great current TV-writing duos) penned a series finale that has as many slit throats as it does loose ends. Had Hannibal been canceled, the most lugubrious show of the last 20 years would have left us with the most ferociously violent series finale to ever appear...

The visual language of "Hannibal" has grown increasingly more abstract and dreamlike as the series has gone on. As the show and its central characters get ever closer to the iconic serial killer, the less their realities seem to be governed by basic laws of either narrative logic or physics. When you are in with Hannibal Lecter, you are in a waking nightmare, where everything seems like it should exist only in the darkest corners of imagination, but is instead somehow horrifyingly real. It's a stylistic shift that's benefited the show, and also one that neatly captures the feeling of watching it and being aware that it airs on NBC (where the third season debuts tomorrow night at 10). Surely, the idea of a series this graphic and disgusting airing on a traditional broadcast network, with all the FCC regulations and Standards and Practices executives involved, must be a dream. Or maybe it's a prank,...

On the eve of the premiere of the third season of NBC's"Hannibal," show runner Bryan Fuller has spoken with THR about the new season which boasts not just key new characters but a "dreamlike" quality as he calls it.
It won't be until the fourth episode of the season where we see events directly after last season's finale with much of the cast seemingly left for dead. The premiere on the other hand kicks off eight months later with Hannibal and Bedelia right in the thick of it in Florence. Also by ditching the murder of the week elements, Fuller says it allows us "just to connect the characters and their honest pursuit of Hannibal".

Fannibals were devastated recently by the announcement that the return of everyone’s favorite cannibal would be delayed until the summer, but at least we have this tasty morsel to tide us over in the mean time.
The new trailer shows a recovered Will Graham searching all over Europe for Hannibal Lecter. There are scenes introducing Hannibal’s adopted aunt, Lady Murasaki, showing Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier attending various events with Hannibal, and a particularly creepy scene in a tunnel at the end which I won’t give away here.
Noticeably absent though are Jack Crawford, Abigail Hobbes, and Dr. Alana Bloom? Have all three succumbed to the injuries they incurred during the season 2 finale, or is showrunner Bryan Fuller simply playing with us? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: summer can’t come soon enough.

All week long, the Paley Center for Media has been hosting PaleyFest New York, its annual East Coast TV extravaganza celebrating a number of notable shows. Amid plenty of jokes directed at both each other and the audience, the Hannibal panel spoke pretty openly about the show and what's in store for next season. Here's what we learned. Gender-bending was necessary. One of...

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to meet with some of the cast and crew of NBC’s Hannibal during Comic-Con. With the showdown at the end of Season 2 leaving viewers anxious for more episodes, Hannibal’s producers shed some light on their plans for Season 3, including the return of a familiar face that we had previously assumed to be dead.

If you haven’t watch the best show on network television, NBC’s Hannibal, you should stop reading. Also, what the hell is wrong with you?

Here are some key points, as reported by The Av Club.

Based on traditional ratings alone, NBC's "Hannibal" is among the least-watched shows on the traditional broadcast networks. But its reputation among the sorts of fans who come to Comic-Con has grown with each passing year. Two summers ago, it was just one half of a Bryan Fuller-focused panel (which also focused on his attempt to reboot "The Munsters" as "Mockingbird Lane") in a very small room. Last summer, it moved to a slightly bigger room to accommodate Fuller and Hugh Dancy. This year, even without Dancy or Mads Mikkelsen or Laurence Fishburne, "Hannibal" has graduated to the big time, taking over the Convention Center's mammoth Ballroom 20 for a panel subtitled "Embrace the Madness," featuring Fuller, director David Slade, writer/producer Steven Lightfoot, longtime Hannibal Lecter producer Martha DeLaurentiis, and supporting players Caroline Dhavernas, Scott Thompson and Aaron Abrams, and moderated by Jonathan Ross. Given that Dhavernas' Dr. Alana Bloom...

In the final episode of the NBC horror show’s second season, the titular cannibal emerged victorious from a bloody showdown against the likes of Will Graham, Jack Crawford and Alana Bloom. Indeed, all three of those opponents were left with their lives in the balance, some closer to death than others. It’s entirely unclear how "Hannibal" will shake out moving forward, now that almost all of the cast members are either dead or dying. But Bryan Fuller, creator and show runner, has a plan. In an interview with TV Guide, he promises that Season 3 will feature Lecter on the run, with an emphasis on his history as a serial killer. “Season 2 is going to be a lot of fun,” says Fuller, “because it’s going to be taking a lot...

Around this time last year I wrote a piece gushing about the operatic ghoulishness of NBC’s Hannibal. This Season carnage maestro Bryan Fuller and his merry band of dismemberists returned to outdo their own impressive bodycount and mess with our minds, expectations, and appetites. This week the season finale promises to explain the mind-boggling fight-to-the-death that opened the season, and presumably to send the story off in another unexpected direction for the eagerly anticipated – and recently announced – Season 3.
As we near the bloody finish, let’s look back at a few of the moments that we will never be able to get out of our heads, even with the assistance of a bonesaw.
(in roughly chron order)
1. Jack Attacks Hannibal
The season started with a bang, as Jack Crawford (Lawrence Fishburne) appeared at Hannibal’s (Mads Mikkelsen) house – not to sup on his delicious, homemade gourmet meals, but to fuck his shit up.

2.11 Ko No Mono
Last week’s Hannibal is focused on the theme of parenthood and parenting, although not in traditional ways. Papa Verger, Hannibal, Will, and even Jack have claims as parents, and we get an uncomfortable look at this through the lens of Shiva, goddess of creation and destruction.
When we think of parenthood, creation is central. After all, life is literally created in the act of human reproduction. But for the most part, this biological act of creation is not what’s addressed in the episode. That sort of creation is almost beside the point, except in one heartbreaking case, which I’ll come back to in a moment.
No, in Ko No Mono, if the relationship between parent and offspring is biological, that’s almost beside the point. Yes, Papa...
