Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

The Android drive alternative to tradition consoles, the Ouya, has been out in the wild for a couple of weeks now. And many are wondering how the bold new face of gaming is a faring.
Perhaps the best people to ask are those who make games for the machine. Which is exactly what both Gamasutra and Edge decided to do, according to a report from GameIndustry, who cites both aforementioned sources. And the response thus far? Some are happy, while others are not.
Not surprisingly, Matt Thorson is rather pleased, according to Edge. He's the developer of the Ouya's most high profile exclusive, TowerFall, and all that attention has been a definite boon:
“The response has been amazing… A lot of high profile people in games have been praising the game, which is of course fantastic, and there’s been a lot of talk among gamers as well.

As Ouya‘s release date approaches, the sense of dread at the system’s potential unpreparedness for market continues to build. Further evidence of the console’s technical issues emerged late last week when Eric Froemling, an Ouya developer working on the game BombSquad, posted about an issue he had been having with the Ouya controller’s analog sticks.
Froemling commented that while the sticks were easily capable of movement along the “cardinal directions” (left, right, up and down), moving along the diagonals was significantly slower. He built a simple piece of software to specifically test the controller, comparing the results with other competing controllers – namely the Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers.
The test revealed inherent “dead zones” in the Ouya controller’s diagonal movement range, an issue which neither the Xbox 360 controller nor the PS3 controller suffered from. From a development standpoint, games can be designed to avoid the pitfalls of poor diagonal movement,...

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

Pixar's "Cars 2" received seven nominations, while Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" took eight nods but was oddly missing in the Best Animated Feature category.

I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out...

"Avatar" earned six Visual Effects Society awards, including the top honor for outstanding visual effects in a VFX-driven feature, at the 8th annual Ves Awards.
Also Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Pixar Animation Studio's "Up" -- the leading contender in this year's animated feature Oscar race -- won three trophies: for outstanding animation, outstanding animated character and outstanding effects animation in an animated feature.
In addition to the top honor for outstanding visual effects, 3D scifi epic "Avatar" earned trophies for best single visual effect of the year, outstanding character animation in a live-action feature, outstanding matte paintings, outstanding models and miniatures, and outstanding created environment.

Last year the Annie Awards caused quite a stir when Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [1] in every category. Of course, Wall-e still went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it's interesting to note that this year, with so many great animated movies to choose from, the Annies decided to go back and honour Pixar's Up with their top prize. Needless to say, Up is now a heavy favourite at the Oscars (if it wasn't already), but how did the other categories shake down for the Annie Awards? Pete Docter also received the award for Directing, but it was The Princess and the Frog and Coraline that split many of the other categories. Personally I was just pleased to see Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach pick up the Writing award for Fantastic Mr. Fox. After the jump, you can see all of the feature film categories...

"Up" from Disney/Pixar won the top honor at the 37th Annual Annie Awards. The fantastic film received the Best Animated Feature Award beating out "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Princess and the Frog," and "The Secret of Kells."
(Check my interview with Annie Award-winner Pete Docter for "Up" held at Pixar Animation Studios right here)
Walt Disney Animation took home six other Annies including three for "The Princess and the Frog" and three for its television production "Prep and Landing."
Created in 1972 by veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards is considered the highest and most prestigious honor given in animation by the animation industry.
The Annie Awards is also a great predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So yes, "Up" will win that category at the Oscars!

Following yesterday's Independent Spirit Award Nominations [1], The Annie Awards have also revealed their full list of nominees for this year. This is the annual award ceremony for the International Animated Film Association, celebrating animation in all of its forms. Sometimes these awards can help predict what movie will win the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, although it's not always entirely reliable (last year Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [2] in every category). As we discussed on this week's podcast [3], it's shaping up to be a pretty tight race for Best Animated Feature this year, and if the Annies are any indication, it looks like Henry Selick's Coraline may have the edge. It was nominated for a total of 10 Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, Character Design, Voice Acting, and Music. Check out the list of nominees in all the feature-length categories after the jump. Best Animated Feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs...

The nominees for the 2010 Annie Awards were also announced today and Focus Features' Coraline topped the list of feature nominees with 10 with Pixar's Up following with 9 and Disney's Princess and the Frog scoring 8. All three films were included in the running for Best Animated feature along with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Secret of Kells and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Last year the Annie Awards came under some scrutiny as Kung Fu Panda blanked the soon-to-be Oscar winner Wall-e. The reason for the uproar being DreamWorks was one of the org's top sponsors (which they still are). This year Monsters vs. Aliens is the only DreamWorks Animated feature making any noise (4 nominations), but it looks like Sony Pictures Animation has bumped up their contributions to become a "Gold Sponsor". Will there again be uproar if Pixar's Up doesn't walk away with the top prizes or Disney's The Princess and the Frog.
