It’s not enough that the Ana Avatar Xprize has offered ten million dollars for design teams to work on making remote access mechanical avatars a reality. They also have to excite the public, especially sci-fi nerds like us, about the idea of being able to place your sensory and spatial awareness into a robotic construct in a distant or dangerous location that our frail human bodies would otherwise have trouble reaching.
That’s where Avatars Inc comes in. The website at avatars.inc presents a fictional framework for a writing contest about avatars, designed to garner interest in the technology by presenting stories of their use in both fantastical and eerily realistic situations. Avatars could be used in the extreme pressures of the deep sea or the cold vacuum of space, but the stories present these applications in the context of a personal tale of hope.

As well as sequels, remakes, and comic book adaptations, there’s one kind of movie you can feel fairly sure is going to keep popping up at a cinema near you: young adult adaptations. Stories about teenagers are still doing big business in the book trade, and thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, Hollywood is convinced of the genre’s appeal, too.
A couple of new franchises have already been kicked off – there’s still at least another Divergent sequel on the way, and another Maze Runner sequel – but what’s more interesting is the list of Ya novels that have been optioned and may soon be taking over the box office. Now, not all of the adaptations on this list will see the light of day,...

After making waves at Sundance last year with his drama Smashed, director James Ponsoldt is enjoying his new found fame. He’s back at the festival this year with The Spectacular Now and this week he has chosen his next project, the Ya novel Pure.
The director will write and direct the adaptation of Julianna Baggott’s novel of the same name which takes place after a “devestating nuclear disaster, where the world has split into two: the “pures,” who survived untouched inside The Dome, and the “wretches” who were fused to whatever object they were touching at the moment of detonation. Joining the ranks of postapocalyptic, romantic, dark tales aimed at younger audiences (read: trying to fill the void that the recently completed Twilight saga has left) is an upcoming adaptation of Julianna Baggott's Pure. The popular Ya novel will be written and directed by indie filmmaker James Ponsoldt (Smashed, The Spectacular Now). Like Hunger Games, Pure's dystopian future centers on the struggles of two opposing societies: the Pures, who live a good life untouched by the trauma of change, and the Wretches, who haven't been so lucky after the "Detonations" (the end of society as it was). The cover of Baggott's novel shows a butterfly trapped in a bell jar, which is exactly how the Pures exist. It's known as the "Dome" and protects the...

After making a splash with his alcoholic drama Smashed last year (featuring a stunning turn by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), director James Ponsoldt is returning to Sundance this week with The Spectacular Now (stay tuned for a review soon). But after this indie run, the director is getting into the studio franchise business with a young adult property. THR has word that Fox 2000 has tapped Ponsoldt to direct an adaptation of the first book in The Pure Trilogy, a series of young adult novels by author Julianna Baggott. The adaptation is a hopeful franchise starter for the studio (but what isn't nowadays?) and as is the case with most of these series geared towards younger kids, it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Read on! The trade says the trilogy follows two societies: the Pures, who live under a dome and are healthy and beautiful, and the Wretches, those scarred by...

Karen Rosenfelt is producing the adaptation and today comes word that Fox 2000 has tapped James Ponsoldt to direct. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, society is divided between the beautiful, healthy Pures, who live within the safety of a dome, and the Wretches, the scarred, burned, fused and otherwise disfigured people harmed by the devastation that occurred outside the dome. The story follows Pressia, a Wretch who meets Partridge, a Pure from a broken family who believes his mother might still be alive outside the dome and decides to risk his life to try to find her. James Ponsoldt is on a tear right now. A year ago, he was high on the Sundance buzz meter with the alcoholism drama "Smashed," which brought him acclaim and showed audiences a whole new side to lead Mary Elizabeth Winstead. He wasted (ha) no time in getting a follow up going, and he's back in Park City this year with "The Spectacular Now." But even before that film has had a chance to premiere, Ponsoldt has taken the next big career move -- he's getting a Ya franchise. Ponsoldt has been snagged by Fox 2000 to write and direct an adaptation of Julianna Baggott's "Pure." The book, the first in a planned trilogy, was released in early 2012 and is officially described as follows: We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . . Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.
But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter...

Exclusive: Fox 2000 has completed its second book purchase in the last two days, acquiring Rebecca Serle's debut novel Rosaline for Shawn Levy to produce under his 21 Laps banner. (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber will adapt the novel, which provides a new way into the classic story of Romeo and Juliet. This is a contemporary version set in a high school, and the famed love story is told from the vantage point of Rosaline, the jilted ex-girlfriend of Romeo. The scribes wrote Pink Panther 2, on which Levy was executive producer. CAA and Foundry Literary + Media repped the book, which will be published next spring by Simon Pulse. The Rosaline sale follows a big deal the label made yesterday to acquire the three-book novel series by Julianna Baggott that starts with Pure, a novel that will be auctioned to publishers Tuesday.
