Labels are funny things. Just because something — say, a movie — can be categorized one way doesn't necessarily mean that's exactly what it is. As an example, I offer Death and Cremation, a 2010 film from director Justin Steele.
Judged on a simple synopsis, Death and Cremation is a thriller. Brad Dourif plays Stanley, a serial killer whose "day job" as a crematorium owner allows him the perfect way to facilitate his hobby. Into his life comes Jarod (Jeremy Sumpter), a bullied teenage misanthrope who looks like the lost member of Fall Out Boy and needs a job and a father figure. Jarod soon ingratiates himself with the reclusive serial killer, who recognizes the boy as a kindred spirit. When Jarod's bullies start disappearing, Jarod comes to suspect that Stanley is responsible. When...

After waiting for what seems like ages, director Justin Steele’s 2010 horror flick “Death and Cremation” is finally coming to DVD in the States this April. I’ve had my eye on this title for what seems like forever, as I happen to be a fan of both Brad Dourif and “The Sasquatch Gang” alumni Jeremy Sumpter. The fine folks over at Green Apple Entertainment were kind enough to snag the film for distribution, giving you an opportunity to own the film as soon as it hits retail. Nice! Need a plot refresher? This synopsis should help: Stan is a 59-year-old recluse who offers cremation services from the basement of his funeral home … though he doesn’t seem much interested in promoting his business. In fact, he’s a deranged sociopath who eliminates anyone he perceives to be a bully. Jarod is a fatherless, 17-year-old high school outcast who no...

In fact, Stan murders neighbors he perceives to be social bullies. Jarod (Sumpter), a bullied and fatherless 17-year-old high school outcast, lands an after-school job in Stan’s cremation house; and the two develop an unusual working relationship that quickly evolves into a partnership.
As middle-aged detective Matt Fairchild, in search of an exciting case, puts the clues of their killings together, Stan must decide if protecting his newfound trainee is worth killing for.

Justin Steele's film Death And Cremation is currently looking for distribution at the European Film Market right now but you don't have to wait to see the trailer. Starring Chucky himself, Brad Dourif, and Jeremy Sumpter, Death And Cremation follows Jarod (Jeremy Sumpter), a bullied 17-year-old who is an outcast at school...
At home he deals with his constantly nagging mom and her self-righteous boyfriend. Jarod finds a job working at a local crematory with Stan but Stan seems to be moonlighting as a killer on the side.
It's hard not to get excited every time Brad Dourif is on the big screen and even though the character of Jarod could be a bit too emo for some tastes, it's safe to say the film is looking pretty good. The trailer offers up an ominous look at the characters and gives a creepy taste of things to come. Let's...

What’s not to like about a horror movie that features both Brad Dourif and Jeremy Sumpter? If you’re curious as to whom the latter is specifically, I implore you investigate “The Sasquatch Gang”, a little-known bizarro comedy from one of the producers of “Napoleon Dynamite”. It’s seriously awesome. Justin Steele’s “Death and Cremation” is currently hitting the European Film Market, which means we are now privy to the film’s trailer, which, to my surprise, actually looks pretty decent. Not that I have anything against Mr. Steele and his endeavors, mind you, but the picture’s plot isn’t exactly intriguing. How many dejected teenager horror flicks do we need, anyway? Please don’t answer that, especially if you’re about to make one yourself. Here’s a quick synopsis: Jarod is a bullied and fatherless 17-year-old high school outcast. He is viewed as a freak...

Last week, a reader named Daniel emailed me about a rather crazy trailer on Apple for an interesting indie film called Death and Cremation. This dark thriller stars legendary character actor Brad Dourif (of "Deadwood", Halloween, the voice of Chucky) as Stan, a lonely 59-year-old who offers cremation services from his basement. Oh and he murders his neighbors that he thinks are "social bullies." High school outcast Jarod (played by Jeremy Sumpter) lands a job working with Stan and the two quickly develop a (murderous) partnership. This looks just twisted and demented and dark and crazy, so watch out, but it doesn't look bad. In the interests of full disclosure I will admit up front that I am a pretty big fan of Brad Dourif and love his performances in otherwise terrible films.
In addition to some questionable film choices, Dourif has recently done solid work in a number of Werner Herzog films and is probably still picking up pay checks for supplying the voice of Chucky in the Childs Play films.
He recently had a small part in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans and even managed to stand out there, against the wild eyed crazed performance by Nicholas Cage.
Brad Dourif is now playing a role that was surely made for him, a creepy funeral owner in a new thriller, Death and Cremation.
Death and Cremation is the feature film debut of Justin Steele, who in addition to directing also co-wrote the film. The film was shot on the Red One by cinematographer Akis Konstantakopoulos. Although the plot doesn’t sound that exciting...

I simply don't think there is enough Brad Dourif in cinema, or else I am looking in the wrong places. Instantly recognizable, Dourif has shown up in all sorts of genres and notable works so it is good to see him once again, this time in a new horror/thriller Death and Cremation.
In Crest Point, people go about their day-to-day lives with no sense of urgency and standard stereotypes abound. There's the high school bully with the popular girlfriend. The single mother raising her son after her husband has died. The detective who's never cracked a big case. Add the great Brad Dourif to any movie and I’m likely to pay a little more attention. Cast him as a lead and you’ve definitely got me in your pocket. Hello Death and Cremation!
Justin Steele’s first full length feature looks pretty sweet but admittedly, it’s the fact that Dourif leads this pack of actors that really has me excited to see it. Dourif stars as Stan, a 59 year old man living in a suburb and making his living by providing cremation services from his basement (like that's not creepy enough). Needing a little extra help, Stan hires Jarod (Jeremy Sumpter) an outcast teen from the local high school to help out with the cremations but there’s a little more going on than the burning of dead bodies and when a string of missing persons leads a detective (Scott Elrod) to come sniffing around, things start to unravel.

Seeing a rather distraught Brad Dourif coming up the steps towards you with a baseball bat resting comfortably on his shoulder isn’t the most soothing of images. It does, though, make a damn fine beginning to a trailer for a film called Death And Cremation.
In the film, directed by first time feature film director Justin Steele, Dourif plays middle-aged man who performs a service to his community. He runs the local crematorium, but, more than that, he rids the neighborhood of people he deems unworthy of the life they’ve been given. Is there anyone creepier than Brad Dourif these days? Don't say Crispin Glover -- I said creepy, not bugfuck crazy. Dourif, known to most folks these days as Grima Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and as Doc Cochran in "Deadwood," is a fascinating, if inconsistent actor. He's been amazing in some amazing films. He's also been in some real crap. Also? He was the voice of Chucky in the Child's Play movies. I did not know that until now. It makes me like him a little more, actually.
His newest film seems to be capitalizing on the creepiness factor. Death and Cremation, helmed by first-time director Justin Steele and also starring Jeremy Sumpter ("Friday Night Lights"), is about:

Have you decided what you want done with your remains once you croak? The main options really don't sound very appealing -- you could either be insect food six feet under or be burned until you're nothing more than just a pile of ash.
