The week of chaos, confusion, and (literal) infighting that preceded Kevin McCarthy’s election as speaker was a pretty strong indication that the Republican Party’s control of the House of Representatives was going to be a shitshow.
They’ve been in control for a week now. Yes, it’s been a shitshow, but the past few days have also served as a reminder that along with all of the antics comes a laser-like focus on derailing the American government.
Republicans have hit the ground running since McCarthy belatedly took up the gavel last Friday.

Habitual liar George Santos wants everyone to know that despite having fudged his resume, real estate portfolio, religious background, education, and athletic career, he has “lived a very honest life.”

Matt Gatez (R-Fla.) questioning him about the origin of more than 700,000 in campaign loans Santos gave himself.

When comedian Chelsea Handler guest hosts “The Daily Show” later this month, she will be making a point to talk about certain people. And yes, that includes Congresswomen Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene.
While appearing on “The View” Thursday, host Joy Behar asked Handler point blank who should be concerned about being a target when Handler hosts, and of course, the comedian had a list ready. Handler noted that she is “chomping at the bit” to talk about Elon Musk and new GOP congressman George Santos. But her big focus will be the women in congress.
“The Marjorie Taylor Greenes and the Lauren Boeberts, I mean, it’s just too much to not talk about, you know?” Handler said. “And those are the kinds of women that you can go after, and I intend to do it, because they need to be called out. It’s so unwomanly to be behaving like that!

Members of the Nassau County Republican Committee have called for Rep. George Santos to resign immediately after a series of reports indicating the newly minted Long Island representative fabricated huge swaths of his personal backstory and resume. Chairman Joseph Cairo divulged what appears to be a new, especially ridiculous lie in castigating Santos.
“He told me — I remember this specifically — that I’m into sports a little bit, that he was a star on the Baruch volleyball team and that they won the league championship,” Cairo said, to laughter. “What can I tell you?...

After the Biden administration revealed this week that classified documents were recently found in Biden’s private office from his time as vice president, “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon took a guess at how former president Obama likely responded to the situation. And, according to the late night host, there’s no reason to worry.
On Monday, it was reported that Biden’s team discovered 10 classified documents in a locked closet, while cleaning out his office last fall. According to a statement from Biden’s attorneys, the documents were turned over to the National Archives the morning after they were found, and it remains unclear what the documents were about.
“Today Obama was like ‘Nothing to worry about. If Joe had access, it wasn’t important,'” Fallon joked. “‘Don’t worry about it.'”

New reports released this week indicate that President Joe Biden plans to announce his bid for re-election next month, and according to Jimmy Fallon, that’s a “smart” plan. You should always wait to solidify a relationship until after Valentine’s Day.
During his monologue on Monday night, Fallon made sure to start by poking fun at Republican Kevin McCarthy, who finally secured the votes he needed to become Speaker of the House over the weekend (after 15 attempts). The late night host joked that McCarthy was probably pretty relieved that it didn’t require a 16th ballot because “that would’ve been humiliating.”
But, moving onto other political news, Fallon touched on a report from The Hill, which said that “the president is planning to make his intentions to run for a second White House term public in the coming weeks, likely in February, around the State of the Union.

On Amber Ruffin’s latest segment of “Amber Says What” on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” the comedian responded to Bill Cosby’s plans to go on tour, George Santos lying about his personal life and the recent uproar over Hollywood’s nepo babies and Greta Thunberg’s unintentional takedown of Andrew Tate.
It’s been a jam-packed last couple of weeks for news, and to help cover some of the topics Meyers is unable to touch on, Ruffin steps in with her segment “Amber Says What” to give a brief breakdown.
One of her first topics was about the New York Magazine article “How a Nepo baby Is Born,” which points out a number of celebs and their now-Hollywood successful children.

Update: The House will adjourn until noon Et/9 a.m. Pt on Thursday, giving Kevin McCarthy more time to try to sway holdouts to support his bid for speaker — or work out some other sort of deal.
The scene on the House floor was raucous as Democrats objected to the motion to adjourn, forcing a vote on the issue. They sought to stay in session for the evening, something that would have likely meant another embarrassing roll call vote and defeat for McCarthy. And Democrats nearly got their wish. With the tally neck and neck, Democrats at one point rushed one member through the aisles to cast her ballot before the House clerk called a close to the process. But some Republicans switched their votes to adjourn, eventually giving them a 216-214 majority in favor of adjournment.

Fox News anchor Dana Perino has a time-tested idea for House Republicans who can’t seem to decide on a speaker, an approach proved through centuries of trial and error by generations of statesmen.
“The Five” host says they should get hammered and hammer it out.
Perino, speaking Wednesday as a panelist on “The Five,” addressed the latest setback for the Republicans, who earlier in the day were unable to elect a House leader after Kevin McCarthy failed to garner enough votes for a second straight day after a sixth vote.
“Today there was no movement towards Kevin McCarthy. There was a slight movement back,” Perino started out, downplaying the obvious as the show’s hosts often do to humorous effect (whether the laughter is with them or at them is a topic for another time).

Brazilian officials are reinstating criminal fraud charges against Rep.-elect George Santos (R–New York) as the Long Island Republican becomes increasingly shrouded in scandal over his resume and identity.
A spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office in Rio de Janeiro told the press that police hadn’t been able to locate Santos but would now seek a “formal response” about the fraud case from over a decade ago.
In 2008, Santos allegedly entered a clothing store in Niterói, Brazil, and spent almost 700 using a fake name and stolen checkbook. He subsequently told police that he stole the checkbook from an elderly man whom his mother had worked for.

As more and more lies from congressman-elect George Santos continue to be uncovered, Jimmy Fallon suspects that, at this point, he’s probably even lying to people about his new job title.
In the weeks since being elected to represent northeast Queens and parts of Long Island’s North Shore in Congress, it’s been revealed that the 34-year-old Republican lied about a pretty substantial number of details about his life and work history.
Among other claims, Santos said his mother died in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11, that his “grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and again fled persecution during WWII,” that he received a degree in economics and finance from Cuny’s Baruch College, that he worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and that he owned 13 rental properties where tenants had not paid rent for a year — all of which were untrue. Jim Parsons has not entirely ruled out a spin-off series based on his character in The Big Bang Theory.
The actor, 49, played Sheldon for the entirety of the hit sitcom, which came to an end after 12 seasons in 2019.
It was Parsons’ decision to leave the sitcom that led to its eventual conclusion. He previously said he was ready “to get out of the security of the show to fully find out what was next for me”.
After the series ended, a spin-off titled Young Sheldon aired in 2017. In it, Iain Armitage plays a younger iteration of Parsons’ character.
Young Sheldon has proven successful, with its fifth series coming to an end in May this year. The show has already been renewed for another two seasons by CBS.

Saturday Night Live fans are urging the sketch show to write a skit based on George Santos.
The US politician has been mired in controversy as of late. Santos is under investigation by Long Island prosecutors, after revelations surfaced that he lied about his religion, education and profession as he campaigned for office.
The Republican has publicly admitted to fabricating key details in his resume. He insisted, however, that he had not committed any crimes and intended to serve in Congress nonetheless.
For example, in his official biography, Santos claims to have graduated from Baruch College, New York City, with a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance.
In a statement sent to NPR, Baruch College said that they could find no match for a George Santos who was born on 22 July 1988 and graduated in 2010. Find out everything we know about George Santos here.

Republican congressman-elect George Santos didn’t do himself any favors on Tuesday when he appeared on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” as part of his efforts to salvage his reputation after being exposed as a serial liar. Santos clearly expected a softball interview from a friendly media outlet; instead, he was grilled like rainbow trout by guest host Tulsi Gabbard.
Pressed by Gabbard about the many lies he’s told about his background and personal life, he was left almost sputtering by the time she ended the excruciating 6 minutes-long interview. But not before he compounded his rapidly decaying situation with more lies, much dissembling, and even an attempt to deflect criticism by insulting voters. No, really.
You can watch the whole thing above now, courtesy of Aaron Rupar.
Of course, the reason you even know Santos’ name is because it was only after he was elected in November to the U.S.

George Santos, the New York Republican elected to Congress in November, is facing more allegations of major discrepancies in his resume.
An article published by the New York Times previously revealed that his claims of his employment and education history couldn’t be substantiated.
This is Santos’ second run after losing to Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi in 2020. He brought Republicans to a narrow majority in the House after defeating Robert Zimmerman in a newly drawn district encompassing parts of Queens and Long Island.
Santos painted himself as a “seasoned Wall Street financier and investor” who worked for multiple firms including Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. Both companies told the Times they found no record of his employment. Both Baruch College and New York University, where Santos claimed to have attended, could not find records of him ever being a student.
The incoming representative is also under fire for allegedly lying about his philanthropic work.
