For the first time since beginning this editorial series, we’re discussing a documentary rather than a fiction film. That’s because Yellow Veil just released a supersized documentary about the history of the Erotic Thriller called We Kill For Love: The Lost World of the Erotic Thriller (2023).
Clocking in at 163 minutes, this is a thorough, occasionally indulgent documentary written and directed by Anthony Penta. The doc uses a framing device featuring an archivist character, played by Michael Reed, cataloguing countless VHS tapes and watching “Suspect Interviews” (aka talking head interviews) in his dimly lit office. These segments recur throughout We Kill For Love, and also feature voice-over narration from Penta that are partially purple prose, partially quotations from academic articles and books on the genre.
The vast majority of the documentary, however, is taken up by clips and talking head interviews. There’s a good variety of interviewees, including scholars such Linda Ruth Williams,...

The nation’s largest newspaper chain, Gannett, continued its cost cutting measures today, announcing a hiring freeze, a mandatory unpaid five-day leave for every employee this December, a six-month sabbatical, a suspension of 401K matches from the company, voluntary severance offer for those who want to retire or leave the company and an optional four-day workweek.
“While these actions are tough, they are critical to Gannett’s long-term success,” CEO and Chairman Michael Reed told employees during a Wednesday company-wide meeting that, according to at least one employee, lasted all of 15 minutes. Reed said the moves “ensure we are prepared to withstand the uncertainty that lies ahead.”
New York Times Media Reporter Ben Mullin got ahold of Reed’s memo to staff.

Photo: ‘6:45' ‘6:45’ brings a new definition to insanity and loop horror stories with its masterful direction by Craig Singer. In this loop film, the characters end up driving themselves to insanity in pursuit of a solution that only they possess with their varying, swirling deja vu powers. Using repetition in movies means directors find themselves using loop stories to add an element of comedy and hysterical exasperation, but ‘6:45’ did the opposite by utilizing it as a tool to create this traumatic and haunting storyline. When you’re setting your New England ghost story against the backdrop of a Salem Witch Trial past, it’s quite the coup to secure a locale as famous as the Noyes-Parris House built in 1669. Now owned by author Glenn Cooper (who serves as executive producer), its historical resonance as the home of Reverend Samuel Parris is felt. It was his daughter Betty and niece Abigail Williams who made the first accusations to begin the tragic true-life events that unfolded. It should be no surprise then that Michael and Shawn Rasmussen would decide to let the spectral ghouls of their film The Inhabitants be children led by the spirit of a woman hung for witchcraft (India Pearl‘s Lydia) after a flu epidemic hit the community’s youth centuries earlier.
The Noyes-Parris House is transformed into the fictional March Carriage House—a quaint little bed and breakfast with a well-documented and haunted past.

There are no tricks, no gimmicks, no CGI fakery, but a return to classic storytelling. Directors/writers: Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen. Cast: Evalena Marie, Dayna Cousins, Victoria Nugent, Michael Reed, and Rebecca Whitehurst. The Rasmussen brothers are probably best known for the work with John Carpenter on The Ward. This earlier title was a horror film with a strong psychological element. Carpenter does not direct the Rasmussen's Dark Feed. Instead, these two have taken on the filmmaking responsibilities, themselves. Unfortunately, they should have rehired Carpenter as Dark Feed stumbles through a weak premise, poor pacing, average acting and dimly lit settings. The end result is a 28Dla Worst Indie Film of 2013 nomination. The Rasmussen brothers first feature as directors sticks with the psychiatric hospital from their earlier work. Here, several characters are trying to put together an indie film. It is a film within a film, get it? The production does not go smoothly as murderous spirits move about the setting. A black ooze begins to pour out of.

It's more of a throwback to some of our favorite horror films from the 70's. Films like The Changeling, Rosemary's Baby, The Haunting of Julia, and of course The Shining."
We should have additional details soon, and for more in the meantime, be sure to "like" The Inhabitants on Facebook.
Synopsis:
A young couple buys a bed and breakfast in New England only to find that the old house may be haunted.

Filled with blood, boobs and bell-bottoms, the 2011 cult horror film The Disco Exorcist pays tribute to the sleazy exploitation films of the 1970s.
The film revolves around Rex Romanski (Michael Reed), a 1970s disco swinger who loves and leaves the wrong woman - the wicked black magic priestess Rita Maria (Ruth Sullivan). So now it’s up to Rex to undo the scorned Rita’s rampage of revenge, murder and destruction before she claims more lives, and takes over the soul of the woman he loves (Sarah Nicklin)
Directed by Richard Griffin (an enthusiastic independent filmmaker whose previous credits include 2007’s Splatter Disco and 2005’s Raving Maniacs), the unrated Disco Exorcist has gotten some exposure online and on the underground film circuit. Heralded by adjectives like "unique," "original," and other words to describe how different this film is from modern horror fare, comes Exhumed . This is a decidedly different approach to the genre for director Richard Griffin who brought us Nun of That and The Disco Exorcist and it stars Debbie Rochon, Sarah Nicklin, Michael Reed, Michael Thurber, Rich Tretheway, Evalena Marie and Jonathan Thomson. I'm not ready to start waxing poetic about how "different" this looks because, honestly, it doesn't. Stylistically, it may be a departure for the guy who directed Creature from the Hillbilly Lagoon . But every director has to mature, right? A trailer and a poster are here and we're sharing them with you below. Here's how it's being described...

Scorpio Film Releasing has sent out a press release and a new still for their upcoming acquisition called Exhumed, which is in the vein of recent indies that are honoring past classics. Much like how House of the Wolf Man homaged the classic cannon of Universal Horror Films from the 1940s, Exhumed is doing the same but to the thrillers from the ’60s like Psycho or Peeping Tom. The film was successfully completed thanks to Kickstarter.
Scorpio Film Releasing’s newest film, Exhumed wraps production.

Stories like this one are why I love writing for Dread Central. Where else could we learn about a movie called The Disco Exorcist?!?
From the Press Release:
Scorpio Film Releasing is proud to announce that their next production will be The Disco Exorcist, a blood-soaked tale of revenge, sex, black magic, disco dancing, and mountains of cocaine. New England genre film director Richard Griffin takes on his bloodiest, sexiest film yet with a production so lurid that only a rating of Nc-17 will suffice.
As with Griffin’s spot-on genre throwback Nun of That and Beyond the Dunwich Horror, The Disco Exorcist promises to be a pitch perfect representation of the 1970’s exploitation genre. "In this age of soulless state-of-the-art, 3D, IMAX CGI-laden 'filmmaking', we thought it would be exciting to bring the art of cinema back to its most basic. Film. Real film ... with grain and scratches, warts and all.

Scorpio Film Releasing and director Richard Griffin are currently in the midst of their latest production, the ’50s genre homage Atomic Brain Invasion. Scripted by Guy Benoit and Griffin, who sent over a couple of advance “lobby cards” (see below) and produced by Ted Marr, the movie is currently two weeks away from finishing up principal photography.
As opposed to Griffin’s previous horrific/violent fare (including Nun Of That, hitting DVD in January; see details here), Atomic Brain Invasion will, in the spirit of its inspirations, be more of a PG-level affair. “Not only do I want it to look and sound like it was made in 1957,” Griffin tells Fango, “but I also want it to be free of all the blood, profanity and nudity of modern horror films. It’s wonderful to have a horror movie that people of all ages can enjoy, much like the classic creature...
