The future of the late Prince's estimated $250 million estate is still undetermined - but interested parties met in Minnesota Monday morning for the latest hearing in the matter. On the topic of locating a will, "We've looked under every box lid," said David Crosby, a lawyer for Prince's bank Bremer Trust, according the Star Tribune. He added, "The inquiry is coming to a close very soon." Prince was 57 when he died at his Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on April 21. Six weeks after his death, the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office released a statement announcing the music icon died of an opioid overdose,...

The sheer lunacy of Frankenstein's Army (review) has had us squealing with delight since its release, and now we have your chance to score the movie on Blu-ray along with some of the most bitchin' action figures ever!
Synopsis:
In the dying days of World War II, a battalion of Russian soldiers find themselves lost in enemy territory in eastern Germany. One soldier (Alexander Mercury, The Golden Compass) has been ordered to make a propaganda film as the squadron makes its way across the wintry landscape, and what follows is a thrilling mix of found-footage shocks and classic horror. Stumbling upon a village decimated by an unseen terror, the Russians are lured into the secret lab of deranged scientist Viktor (Hellboy's Karel Roden). Viktor has unearthed the journals of the legendary Dr. Victor Frankenstein and has used them to assemble an army of supersoldiers stitched together from the body parts...

A group of Russians during World War II finds that the Nazis are up to no good under the supervision of a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein. The results are gory, goofy fun but the concept of making it a found footage film tapers some of the enjoyment. A Russian army unit is sent on a secret mission during World War II. They have an embedded cameraman named Dimitri (Alexander Mercury) who is recording everything presumably for some propaganda purpose (he captures some moments where the Russians are just as cruel to the populace as the Nazis). They receive a distress call from another Russian unit and go to the rescue. What they find is a bricked up church...

With Frankenstein’s Army being released in the Us on Blu-ray & DVD this week, director Richard Raaphorst is the subject of our latest Q&A session. Not only did he tell us about his work on Frankenstein’s Army and upcoming projects, but he also shared two early photos of his industrial monster creations:
You’ve been working on the story behind Frankenstein’s Army for a number of years now, but before that, we saw Nazi zombies from you in the Worst Case Scenario short. How did Frankenstein’s Army evolve from that original idea?
Richard Raaphorst: I didn’t want Fa to be Wcs Part 2. I wanted it to be its own dark world, but I had a very hard time getting the monsters from Wcs out of my head. I worked with Oleg Bondarenko, one of my favorite artists, who developed some sketched of monsters. We...

It’s true that the whole Nazi zombie angle has already been explored by Norway’s horror comedy Dead Snow, but first time director Richard Raaphorst is looking to one-up Tommy Wirkola’s snow-covered slaugtherfest with his own take on undead Nazi soldiers – Frankenstein’s Army. Opting not to challenge Wirkola’s zombie theme, Raaphorst instead created his Nazi monsters around the work of Dr. Frankenstein, a man who became obsessed with sewing together the leftover parts from dead corpses and reanimating them. I’m honestly not really sure what’s scarier: cursed Nazi zombies who want to eat you, or maniacal undead mutant soldiers who want nothing more than to pulverize you. Shit, I didn’t think Nazis could get any more evil.

If you think you’ve seen every possible extrapolation of the found footage concept, think again.
Richard Raaphorst’s Frankenstein’s Army may do its best to adhere to a first-person camera perspective, but it’s crazed mixture of classic old-school Gothic horror, steam-punk monsters and extravagant gore effects ensure that it feels fresher than other recent forays in the genre. While there’s not exactly a good reason that Army need be a found footage film, the approach doesn’t inhibit what Raaphorst is up to, and on more than one occasion it allows him to have a certain degree of trashy fun with the concept. Whether this ends up being to the delight of the audience, or at their expense, will depend entirely on the squeamishness of the viewer.

Over the past few years there’s been a real peak in the impact of fan-boy fantasy on cinema, especially horror. We’ve seen some truly nutty visions being realised on the big screen and, for better or worse, that trend shows no signs of stopping. The recent sub-genre of Nazi zombie films is creatively tackled in first time feature director Richard Raaphorst’s endearingly titled, handheld camera shot, B-movie extraordinaire Frankenstein’s Army.
How, may you ask, is a film set during WW2 shot on hand-held camera? By the genius of a specially selected film student chosen to tag along with a Russian platoon to film some propaganda. This surmises the bonkers...

Review Andrew Blair 2 Jul 2013 - 06:48
Andrew reckons he could've approximated the experience of watching this movie with an Xbox and some illegal drugs
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play Bioshock, then take a hefty dose of hallucinogens, and then play Call of Duty: World at War? Well, wonder no more, for Frankenstein's Army is the answer to that very specific question.
Nazi Germany gave us a visual shorthand for evil, huge scope for horror film makers, and Fanta.
There is no Fanta in this film.
There's a fair spurting of blood though.
The plot, which to be honest is the least of your concerns here, consists of a Russian reconnaissance team moving into Eastern Germany while being filmed by Alexander Mercury's Dmitri for propaganda purposes. Their radio is being jammed, but then they receive a distress call from another squad, and move into...

In ten days, on January 26th, Dark Sky Film’s Frankenstein’S Army will be making its World Premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Tagging along with this sweet news, we have two new stills from the Richard Raaphorst film.
The first still features Machete Zombot in the corpse cooler, and the second shows Viktor (Karel Roden) in his lab, with a Machete Zombot standing watch.
Here’s the synopsis and cast:
Frankenstein’S Army takes place toward the end of World War II, as Russian soldiers push into eastern Germany and stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Viktor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein’s work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades - a desperate Hitler’s last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

A interesting concept. The army of pieced together super-soldiers combines an industrial-age aesthetic with nods to modern horror. See the Machete Zombot in the corpse cooler below, more stills here, and read the synopsis:

Since everyone loves Nazi Zombies as much as I do, I am thrilled to talk about two upcoming Nazi Zombie movies that look more than promising. Exciting is an understatement, even.
Today, Dark Sky Films released the first two official stills from Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s Nazi Zombie horror film Frankenstein's Army.
This is someone called “Propellerhead”, described officially as "a hulking Nazi automaton that uses its spinning rotors to slice a bloody swath through the film’s terrified, lost Russian battalion."
And this is Doctor Frankenstein, as played by Karel Roden, dissecting someone unwilling to be dissected.
Like any good Nazi Zombie movie, Frankenstein's Army is set at the tail-end of World War II, when Russian soldiers accidentally find a secret Nazi laboratory as they enter Germany's eastern end. Another delightfully disturbing bit of goodness has come our way from the now shooting Frankenstein's Army. Never let it be said that horror films aren't always there to lend you a hand when you need it!
On the Dutch website Horror.nl, they report that the film will have a theatrical release in the UK and its world premiere in Toronto. Even better? There will be no CGI effects, and from what we're hearing, the movie will be way over-the-top. Below you'll find an image of a mechanized zombie arm. Oh the joy! Thanks to DC reader Tump for the heads-up and translation!
The Czech shoot, portraying Viktor Frankenstein's efforts to turn around German fortunes by animating super soldiers from the body parts of the fallen, is Richard Raaphorst's helming debut and is before cameras right now (how we love saying that).

Bloody Disgusting was given the opportunity to spend a day on set, and boy, the film's producers couldn't have picked a better location for the World War 2 Nazi-monster flick! An old run-down mining complex hosted various sets where a major part of the action took place. This mining complex, that nowadays serves as a museum to the public, is located between a still working prison and a shooting range of the Czech police from where constant gunfire was heard all day long. Add to this numerous actors dressed up as German and Russian soldiers armed to their teeth, and the illusion...
