With Spooky Season firmly in the rear view mirror, Trace and I are now mid-way through our month on Toxic Masculinity. And while we probably could have counted Apt Pupil (and maybe even Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2), we officially kicked things off with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.
Things get considerably darker with our second entry: Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel‘s Deadgirl. The extreme film follows two high school teenage boys – Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) – who discover a zombie girl (Jenny Spain) in an abandoned hospital and make the horrific decision to use her as a sex object rather than alert the authorities.
As Rickie struggles with his guilty conscience, Jt recruits other “friends” like Wheeler (Eric Podnar) to assault the girl. Things get out of hand, however, when a pair of jocks, including Johnny (Andrew Dipalma) – the boyfriend of Rickie’s crush,...

Trent Haaga's resume as a filmmaker includes acting (lot's of it), writing, producing, directing and few other odd jobs along his journey. Gigs include the Killjoy movies from Full Moon in which he plays the evil demon clown Killjoy, he has been invloved in a Toxic Avenger movie from Troma and he has written what has become a cult classic in its very short life span, I'm talking about Dead Girl which gave Jenny Spain her break out role and if you haven't seen this cool movie I recommend you do so. I got with Trent about his current projects and the rumors going around about a sequel to Dead Girl, oh it's real all right! Check out my latest Versus to learn more about filmmaker Trent Haaga.
Brian S- Hey Trent, first off congratulations on the popularity that Dead Girl has gotten and it just keeps on making its way to cult status.

Back in 2008 we were treated to the Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel helmed zombie horror 'Deadgirl'. 'The Devil's Muse' and 'Zombiegeddon' writer and actor Trent Haaga penned the script and according to the Hollywood Reporter it appears that a sequel script is ready. Surrounded by controversy and accusations of misogyny on it's release the flick featured a couple of teenagers who come across a zombified naked girl in an abandoned mental institution. Things start going even further down the morbid passage as an even darker necrophiliac-style take on things rears it's unsettling head. Shiloh Fernandez ('Red Riding Hood') and Noah Segan starred with the gorgeous actress Jenny Spain (below), who starred as the dead girl. But word is that the sequel will flip it around somewhat by seeing what a group of young women do when they discover a naked zombified man!...

If you missed Trent Haaga's Deadgirl at festivals or on DVD, do yourself a favor ... Rectify that situation immediately. The film is nothing short of riveting and features an absolutely fearless performance from star Jenny Spain. Like all good movies, talk of a sequel has begun to rumble ...
According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog Haaga has written a screenplay for a sequel in response to the backlash from women who found the original film misogynistic.
For the sequel it will be girls who find a naked "dead" guy. Presumably, they make different choices than the guys did in the same situation, but here's one instance where a sequel could actually help further define and illuminate the issues raised in the first film.
Look for more on this one we hope very soon.
Update
According to Bloody Disgusting the above report is a bit off in terms of the plot.

The first time I watched my screener copy of Deadgirl, I silently took it out of my player, placed it in its case, and put it on my shelf. My thoughts after watching the film were so upsetting that I couldn't quite articulate my feelings about it. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I knew I had to watch it again to organize my thoughts, but for some reason, my hand refused to pick up that disc and put it back in the player.
And when I finally did watch Deadgirl again for the purposes of this review, I remembered what it was that was keeping me from watching. Her eyes. Deadgirl is on one level a perfectly functional zombie flick (and quite literal,...

Low-budget DVDs rarely come as nasty, disturbing, and as controversial as Deadgirl, out now from Dark Sky Films. Just the plotline alone isn't for the squeamish -- and you've been warned: Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan), a couple of high school outsiders, kill time one day by cutting class and rummaging around a long-closed, dilapated insane asylum. Deep, deep in the bowels of the place they come across a naked woman (Jenny Spain). She's filthy dirty, her hair is matted, and she's chained to a table. And, apparently, she's dead. Rickie wants to help her, but J.T., the far more dominant personality of the two, immediately decides to keep her, much like a toy or a doll to be played with. It's too simplistic to describe Deadgirl as a zombie movie. It's really not; the girl just happens to be dead, but won't die, with no further explanation offered.

Having divided viewers and sparked a lot of chatter on the film-festival circuit and at midnight shows over the past year, Deadgirl has now arrived on unrated DVD from Dark Sky with a reversible cover reflecting the way the movie subverts expectations of the undead and bad-girl subgenres. Initially packaged on the outside is the traditional zombie image seen at left; on the inside is the more provocative art seen below.
The movie (reviewed at length here) is both a gory ghoul opus in which the living corpse receives more violence than it inflicts, and a femme-fatale film of sorts in which the title character is confined to a state of inactivity for much of the running time. Specifically, the catatonic DeadGirl (Jenny Spain) is discovered bound to a table in the basement of an abandoned hospital by Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan), teenaged pals united by their high-school-outsider status.

Drawing from a broad range of influences the likes of Boxing Helena, director Atom Egoyan, and the collective works of David Cronenberg, this dirty micro-budgeted little nasty comes front-loaded with a provocative squirm-inducing premise that will no doubt drive strong ancillary business. But randy adolescents open for a thinly veiled skin flick will be largely disappointed. Similarly, those sick to the back teeth of torture porn would do well not to dismiss this as just another bandwagoner, as co-directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel have far more on their minds here than simply mining a gimmick for the purposes of titillation.
Penned by bit-part-actor-turned-screenwriter Trent Haaga, a man with a long and undistinguished career acting in the realm of Dtv horror, Deadgirl sketches out an eerily plausible portrait of horny adolescent maledom taken to its grim but logical conclusion. Skipping out on class for the afternoon, high school misfit Rickie...

Issues of gender have been discussed in relation to slasher films for almost as long as frequently unclothed women have cowered beneath and fallen victim to phallic blades. The same hasn’t been true of zombie cinema, since transformation into the undead has tended to render questions of male/female identity moot. That changes with Deadgirl, a troubling, attention-grabbing and already polarizing first feature by directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel. Working from a screenplay by Trent Haaga, whose previous credits for Troma and other low-budget outfits gave little indication of the thematic ambitions expressed here, Sarmiento and Harel flip the genre script on its head. Deadgirl (playing midnight bookings in selected U.S. cities and at Montreal’s Fantasia festival this weekend) begins by establishing as its “heroes” a couple of high-school slackers and best friends, Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan). Neither one of them has...

Directed by Gadi Harel and Marcel Sarmiento from a script by Trent Haaga, Deadgirl tells the disturbing story of two high-school friends (Noah Segan and Shiloh Fernandez) who discover a naked young woman (Jenny Spain) strapped to a table in the basement of an abandoned hospital. She seems barely alive, and the way in which each young man reacts to their find sends the story spiraling into increasingly unpleasant directions. Frightening. That’s the best way to describe Deadgirl, an impressive effort by co-directors Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel based on an ingenious script by Trent Haaga that takes an uncomfortably harsh look at gender-sexual dominance. It’s frightening on multiple levels. It's a perennially f--ked up movie.
Yes, it’s another zombie film, but like Let the Right One In’s treatment of vampires, Deadgirl lets the horror emerge not from the ghastly ghoulies but from the dark impulses developed by the uncertainty of growing up. The premise alone is pure brilliance, but where the film takes its teenage characters to is a real revelation of both talent and the male psyche.
The Deadgirl in question is a sexy naked girl (a brave and sporting Jenny Spain) two aimless boys Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) find chained in the basement of an abandoned asylum. Realizing that she’s undead and unclaimed,...
