Madrid, April 6 (Ians) Matchday 28 in La Liga could see a major hangover from this week’s Copa del Rey semifinals that will affect both the top and the bottom of the table.
The weekend kicks off on Friday with Jose Luis Mendilibar making his home debut as Sevilla coach as his side entertain Celta Vigo. Mendilibar’s first game in charge saw Sevilla win away to Cadiz, and three more points against a rival that is in mid-table would start to lift Sevilla clear of the threat of relegation.
Osasuna booked only their second Copa del Rey final appearance in their history on Tuesday night as they beat Athletic Club 2-1 on aggregate after extra time and that emotion and 120 minutes of intense football could leave them with heavy legs ahead of their home game against Elche, a Xinhua report said.

Madriod, April 4 (Ians) Former Espanyol striker Luis Garcia has been named as the new coach of the struggling La Liga side.
Garcia replaced Diego Martinez, who was sacked on Monday after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Girona left them fourth from bottom of La Liga and a 1-1 draw with Valencia, dropping them into the bottom three.
The 42-year-old has left a post coaching Real Madrid’s C-team RSC International in Spain’s fifth tier, and signed a contract for the remainder of the current season and the 2023-2024 campaign, a Xinhua report said.
He returns to a club he represented as a player between 2005-2011, scoring 61 goals in 262 appearances and helping the club win the 2006 Copa del Rey and reach the 2007 UEFA Cup final.
Martinez was not the only La Liga coach to lose their job on Monday, with Valladolid sacking Jose Rojo ‘Pacheca’ in the wake of...

Bilbao (Spain), Jan 19 (Ians) Athletic Club Bilbao continued their good form in the Copa del Rey knockout competition by qualifying for the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win at home to Espanyol.
The win on Wednesday night means the team from the Basque Region have now reached the last eight of the tournament for four consecutive seasons.
Oscar de Marcos scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute after the full-back ran onto a smart backheel from midfielder Oihan Sancet, who had been fed by an intelligent pass from the impressive Oier Zarraga.
Athletic completely dominated the first half, which was played almost entirely in the Espanyol half, with the visitors sitting deep with a five-man defense.
The second half saw visiting coach Diego Martinez make an attacking change, bringing on winger Aleix Vidal, but although Espanyol looked to push forward more, Athletic continued to control the majority of the ball.

Madrid, Jan 8 (Ians) A goal from Yeremy Pino and a penalty from Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal a 2-1 win at home to Real Madrid in a thrilling La Liga match.
With defender Dani Carvajal injured, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti named a starting lineup without a single Spanish player in a league game for the first time ever.
Villarreal started brightly and could have had two goals in the opening minutes, with Francis Coquelin hitting the post, but somehow the game arrived at the break 0-0.
Pino’s powerful shot put Villarreal ahead early in the second half, but Real Madrid were level just before the hour when the Var awarded them a penalty after the ball brushed defender Juan Foyth’s hand.
Karim Benzema made no mistake from the penalty spot, but three minutes later another controversial handball saw Villarreal awarded a spot kick and this time Moreno sent...

Madrid (Spain), Sep 13 (Ians) Spanish La Liga club Espanyol have sold Spain international striker, Raul de Tomas to Rayo Vallecano for a reported fee of eight million euros, plus three more depending on variables.
Both clubs confirmed the move on Tuesday, ending a difficult few months for the striker, who now returns to the club where he scored 38 goals in two seasons on loan from Real Madrid between 2017-19.
The 27-year-old fell out with new Espanyol coach, Diego Martinez at the start of pre-season and has not played one minute of the new campaign (although he has supposedly been carrying an injury). However, the breakdown in relations has led the Barcelona-based club to sell him to Rayo for less than half the 20 million euros they paid to sign him from Benfica in January 2020.
The fee is even more surprising given Raul de Tomas’ statistics with Espanyol, netting 45 goals in...

Madrid, Aug 12 (Ians) The 2022-23 La Liga season kicks off in Spain this weekend with some subtle changes to rules and the uncertainty over the effects of a pre-season break for the World Cup finals will cause.
Referees have been told to clamp down on time wasting and add on extra time if needed and (in theory) they should also alter their interpretation of handball in the penalty area, with only clear infractions given as penalties.
The first three rounds of matches won’t have midday or mid-afternoon games due to the probability of hot weather and the season kicks off just as temperatures appear to be easing after the hottest summer on record in Spain, reports Xinhua.
There is also some uncertainty over which players will be able to play in the opening weekend, with several clubs (among them Fc Barcelona) struggling to meet La Liga’s tough financial...
