Have you ever wondered about all the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of Arrakis, only to be drawn in by a secret hint that eluded the sharpest-eyed readers? You’re not alone! Millions of Dune fans may have missed a subtle yet fascinating fact about the blue sandworm piss before it was unveiled on Joe Rogan’s podcast last month.
The secret came out in an intense discussion with the famous mycologist, Paul Stamets, who was a close friend of Frank Herbert, the mastermind behind Dune. Many of the events in Dune: Part Two are surprising to people who have not read Herbert’s intimidating novel Dune. Certain revelations in the films would have been extremely difficult to predict in the absence of prior knowledge of the plot.

Star Trek: Discovery, now in its fifth and final season (with new episodes dropping Thursdays), has one of the best—if not the best—couples of the long-running franchise in Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). For Stamets, this final season is really about his legacy—especially upon learning that the spore drive program is being shuttered. Now that the U.S.S. Discovery crew has a new mission, “it’s his entire driving force,” Rapp tells TV Insider. “It’s a major crossroads moment and anytime any human being has a crossroads moment when he finds this new path, it’s like, all in. When you’re ready to walk away from something and then something else presents itself, it’s either, okay, I’m not going to do that or going to do it, but if I’m going to do it, I’m...

This article contains spoilers for the season 5 premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery."
With an ensemble cast as large as the one in "Star Trek: Discovery," it can't be easy to find a way to give each and every major character their own moment to shine. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is all but guaranteed to play a significant role in any given episode, naturally, as is David Ajala's Cleveland Booker. Recent seasons have even committed to shining a brighter spotlight on the supporting cast at large, devoting much more screen time and emotional heavy-lifting to characters like Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz), and Adira (Blu del Barrio). But Doug Jones' charismatic performance as the even-keeled Saru has always helped elevate "Discovery" to greater heights, serving much of the same narrative and thematic purpose as classic franchise characters like Spock or Data.

Every franchise out there should be making casting choices that reflect the breadth and diversity of humanity we see every single day in our own lives, but "Star Trek" in particular has even more reason than others to do so. Heralded from its earliest conception as a progressive, forward-thinking, and uniquely idealistic series of stories, the property has done its best to maintain creator Gene Roddenberry's grand vision throughout its 50+ years of existence. That's not to say "Star Trek" has a perfect track record or has avoided certain missed opportunities over the years. Still, the franchise has always gone much further and more boldly than its contemporaries could ever claim to do.
As /Film's Jacob Hall notes in his review of the "Discovery" season 5 premiere, this particular "Star Trek" series has always made it a point to foreground characters of marginalized identities who rarely get a moment in the spotlight in most other entertainment.

Star Sonequa Martin-Green introduced the series-ending clip alongside showrunner Michelle Paradise at Ccxp in São Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday. In the scene, Captain Burnham is joined by Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) as they face off against a shape-shifting being that also can cloak, making it a doubly formidable opponent.

When Paramount+ brought Trek back to television in September 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery's double-decker premiere event, it broke ground on a road that would see the rebirth of the Trek franchise.
Six years later, Star Trek: Discovery has saved the galaxy multiple times; traveled through the mycelial network, to the Mirror Universe and back, forward in time nine hundred years, and beyond the edge of the known universe; and spawned the highly successful spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
In March, Paramount+ announced the fifth season will be the USS Discovery's final mission. We've gathered all the intel on what it'll entail, who's on board, and when you can expect to buckle up and hold on as Michael Burnham and her crew let 'er fly one last time.

Paramount+’s ongoing “Star Trek: Discovery” may feature the most out LGBTQ+ characters ever seen in the “Star Trek” universe, but diehard Trekkies know that the groundwork was laid long before then.
Premiering in 2017 to critical and fan acclaim, “Star Trek: Discovery” featured out gay actors (and original “Rent” co-stars) Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz as chief engineer Paul Stamets and his husband Hugh Culber, respectively. Together, they made history as the first out gay couple on any “Star Trek” franchise, and that’s something series co-creator Bryan Fuller is very proud of.
“That was something that was very important from the outset is to have explicit representation of queerness,” Fuller told IndieWire during a recent interview. “So I’m glad that queer people are finally seeing themselves in ‘Star Trek’ stories in a way that they hadn’t before. Fans of Star Trek: Discovery were given some exciting information at New York Comic Con.
We got an exciting new trailer, photos, and confirmation that there will be three new cast members.
Callum Keith Rennie will star as Rayner, Elias Toufexis as L'ak, and Eve Harlow as Moll.
Series star Sonequa Martin-Green joined the panel virtually from set in Michael Burnham’s captain’s chair.
Rayner is a gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew – he leads, they follow.

The following contains Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 spoilers.
The primary story of Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 has gone back to many of the basics that make the Star Trek franchise so great, asking big questions about the necessary conflicts between visionary ideals and the real world those who hold them must exist in. A season that has continually wrestled with what an institution like the Federation is supposed to be and do, its central arc explores the inescapable, often uncomfortable tensions between hope and pragmatism, philosophy and realism, and politics and practicality. But while these are precisely the sort of stories that Star Trek is uniquely positioned to explore, this season has rarely featured arcs that might be called “fun.”

Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 8, “All In.”
In the 23rd century, Starfleet didn’t have ship counselors. So, when the USS Discovery jumped from 2258 to 3188, suddenly, Dr. Culber was given two jobs instead of one. And in Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery, Culber’s new gig as ship’s counselor in addition to his regular job as a physician, has added a lot of extra stress. It’s one thing to mend those phaser burns, but quite something else to maintain the mental health of the Disco crew. As Discovery returns for the second half of Season 4, Wilson Cruz jumped on the phone to discuss Culber’s journey so far, his inspirations for his character’s journey, where Discovery Season 5 might take us, and why he has so much “pride” for the Strange New Worlds crew.

There’s pure silence in the air until Noa Kalos stretches her hand into the video’s frame and clamps a white wire onto a bowling ball-sized cluster of oyster mushrooms. Pink and fleshy with pronounced gills, they look like they were plucked from a desert garden on Mars — and they sound even more otherworldly. A deep cacophony of bleeps and bloops ensues, and I can only imagine this is what one hears while playing Mario Kart on ketamine.

Debuting in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery spent its first three seasons adventuring through time and space and alternate dimensions in their efforts to save the galaxy.
However, despite the presence of Sarek from the beginning, the inclusion of Spock and Amanda, as well as Gabby Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, and the mission to save Book's family and homeworld on Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Discovery's crew hasn't had a family unit to call their own until Adira Tal (with Gray Tal) became a de facto part of Stamets and Culber's household.
Speaking with press via virtual roundtable from Nycc in October, Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio, and Anthony Rapp shared some of how their family grows and supports each other over the upcoming season.
It's clear, watching the three field questions as a group, that much of their on-screen comfort level with each other is grounded in real-life respect and familiarity.

“Star Trek: Discovery” will go where no “Trek” show has gone before, in more ways than one, in its fourth season, as the newest trailer for the Paramount Plus series revealed.
Season 4 of “Discovery” picks up after Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) was promoted to captain in the Season 3 finale, the first time a Black woman has sat in the captain’s chair in a live-action “Trek” series.
Set nearly 1,000 years further into the future than any other “Trek” series, Season 4 will find the crew of the Discovery contending with a massive anomaly that is five light-years in size, threatening to destroy life throughout the galaxy. The event is so catastrophic that it pulls together worlds that are in the Federation and outside of it.

During the pandemic, one thing has become clear: the need for play is great and can’t be denied. Fans got an extended preview of Season 4 of “Star Trek: Discovery” Monday, the first with Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) in the captain’s chair. The teaser dropped as part of First Contact Day celebrations.
Burnham took command of the U.S.S. Discovery at the end of Season 3 when Saru left the ship to return to his homeworld of Kaminar and mentor his fellow Kelpian Su’Kaul.
Whereas Season 3 — which flung the Discovery 900 years into the future from it’s Season 1 and 2 timelines — focused on the lack of dilithium (i.e. space fuel) and the Emerald Chain criminal syndicate, Season 4’s threat is not an alien but an anomaly.

Paramount Plus revealed a teaser trailer for the upcoming second season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which will premiere in 2022.
The teaser trailer was introduced by Sir Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” at the top of Paramount Plus’ slew of First Contact Day virtual panels. Additionally, it was revealed that production on the second season has already begun.
John de Lancie, who first portrayed the iconic character Q on “The Next Generation,” confirmed that he will appear in the second season alongside Stewart. Q shared comedic chemistry with Picard on the “Star Trek” series, often getting on the captain’s nerves. Picard initially deemed Q’s services unnecessary, but as the series progresses, Q morphed into a mentor role to Picard. In the episode “Deja Q,” he said Picard is “the closest thing in this universe that I have to a friend.

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 reaches its ninth episode this week, with these promo images teasing that the mysterious illness facing Philipa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) is at the center of it. Last outing, Georgiou came clean to Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) about her blackouts and visions. In this next instalment, “Terra Firma, Part 1,” the Discovery crew will travel to a mysterious planet as part of their mission to find a cure for her condition.
These pics unfortunately don’t give us a sneak peek at this strange new world, though, as they’re all set aboard the ship. It looks like Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Georgiou will be going on the quest for a cure together, while the images also showcase Captain Saru (Doug Jones), Ensign Tilly Masterson (Mary Wiseman), Lt. With it spectacular footage of growth and decay and impassioned speeches about the magic of mushrooms, this documentary is a treat for the eye and ear
Here is a rather oddly-structured documentary-cum-mission-statement that changes its horse midstream. It starts out as a slickly shot nature film and then morphs into an impassioned screed on how mushrooms can – essentially – save the world. The central figure is Paul Stamets, a Denzil Dexterish figure who studies fungi in Washington state and is an advocate for the life form’s centrality to harmonious natural systems. (Though quite how that squares with developing lethal types of mould to exterminate termites is never explained.)
If this film resembles a souped-up Ted talk that’s because it presumably took wing from Stamets’ own 2009 Ted talk, Six Ways Mushrooms Can Save the World, and the film contains copious excerpts from his various on-stage lectures: there’s no denying...

The team behind a new documentary full of incredible footage of the secret life of mushrooms explain how fungi could help us stave off future pandemics
Watching the anemone stinkhorn sprout from the soil is a wondrous – and terrifying – thing. Emerging from a pod that looks like a truffle, the mushroom unfurls half a dozen arms, all a throbbing scarlet, like a collection of tongues. Each of these is forked and, across their stems, a series of black sticky lumps pop up like rotting barbecue. It’s supposed to smell something awful too.
The uncanny blooming of the Aseroe rubra is one of many transfixing moments in Fantastic Fungi, a crowdfunded US documentary made by Louie Schwartzberg, an affable old hippie and pioneer of time-lapse photography. It stars Paul Stamets, a trailblazer in the popularisation of mycology, the study of fungi, and bursts with footage revealing the secret life of mushrooms.

CBS All Access dropped the trailer for its long-awaited third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” on Tuesday during CBS All Access’ virtual Star Trek Day celebration.
You can watch the trailer — which sees the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery flung nearly a millennium (930 years to be exact) into the future. — in the video above.

We’ve got just five weeks to go until Star Trek: Discovery season 3 finally arrives. Though it was filmed last year, the CBS All Access series was held up over the pandemic, but following the conclusion of Lower Decks‘s first season, it’ll start unfolding weekly. With the show’s return just around the corner, then, one crew member of the U.S.S Discovery has now teased that we can expect some fallout from the ship’s jump 1000 years into the future.
Anthony Rapp took part in a Star Trek virtual panel at Dragon Con over the weekend and was on hand to promise that season 3 will not sweep the consequences of the time jump under the rug and will properly explore the human impact of what it means to pull the Discovery crew so far from everything they’re familiar with. As he put it:
“Season three does delve into family dynamics.

Star Trek: Discovery has always had a mission to diversify the franchise even more than before, including giving us Trek‘s first black female lead and its first prominent gay couple. Season 3 will feature another couple of firsts, too, as the upcoming run of the CBS All Access show will introduce Trek‘s first non-binary and trans characters.
Joining the cast are Blu del Barrio and Ian Alexander. Del Barrio – a non-binary actor who uses they/them pronouns – is playing Adira, described as “highly intelligent with a confidence and self-assurance well beyond their years.” The character will find a new home aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and will form an unexpected bond with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz).
Meanwhile, Alexander is playing transgender character Gray, who is “empathetic, warm and eager to fulfil his lifelong dream of being a Trill host, but...
