From Warner Bros. Pictures comes the feature film Blue Beetle, marking the DC Super Hero’s first time on the big screen. The film, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, stars Xolo Maridueña in the title role as well as his alter ego, Jaime Reyes.
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
Soto directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”), based on characters from DC.

Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. While Blue Beetle may be more light-hearted than other superhero stories, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be some life-or-death stakes.
Related Box Office Predictions: Gran Turismo looking at soft opening
The death of a family member or close friend in order to motivate a superhero has been done again and again, but… it does work. While speaking with Collider, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto said that the original plan was for “nobody” to die, but DC Studios pushed for an “emotional death.” Unfortunately, that meant that Reyes family patriarch Alberto (Damián Alcázar) had to die, but Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wanted his death to mean something more.
“‘How can we create the lowest of lows with the family member?” Soto said. “And how that low is not just another death in the superhero genre, but how that low...

Spoilers for Blue Beetle. Consider yourself warned. Although Blue Beetle may not be performing at the box office the way Warner Bros. was hoping it would, the movie has received warmer reviews than the last few DC movies. The film also has a connection to the new DC Universe as James Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto told THR that the mid-credit scene could provide a clue to that Dcu future.

The Blue Beetle mid-credit scene reveals that Ted Kord, the original Blue Beetle, is still alive. As Warner Bros. didn’t tell Ángel Manuel Soto to cut the tease, he’s optimistic that it will have the chance to be continued.

Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) are teaming with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto on The Wrecking Crew, the buddy action comedy that they’ve set up at MGM, Deadline can confirm.
Bautista and Momoa were both in talks for the film, scripted by Warrior creator Jonathan Tropper, long before the SAG-AFTRA strike. Tropper’s deal was negotiated and closed, and his script submitted, prior to the WGA strike began in early May.
Plot details are under wraps for now, but Bautista and Momoa sold the pitch to MGM following a four-bidder battle in the fall 2021, as we were first to report. Jeffrey Fierson, Momoa’s collaborator on the Netflix/Discovery Canada series Frontier, will produce.

With Blue Beetle officially in theaters, Ángel Manuel Soto is ready to announce another feature-length project. Soto is directing Wrecking Crew, a film starring Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa.
Soto directs from a script by Warrior writer Jonathan Tropper. MGM is the studio. Tropper completed the script before the writers’ strike began in June. While we know the feature is a buddy comedy, further details about Wrecking Crew are a mystery.
Soto’s Blue Beetle is in theaters now. The DC superhero film earned $43.4M during its opening weekend despite receiving mostly positive reviews. Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college grad who returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. “As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab,...

The newest DC movie and the 14th installment of DC Extended Universe ‘Blue Beetle’ recently premiered in theaters. However, the movie didn’t really premiere with a bang, at least not in a commercial sense. The movie grossed merely $41.4 million worldwide during the opening weekend, which is shameful even when it’s compared to ‘The Flash,’ DC’s most recent box-office bomb, which grossed $139 million worldwide on the opening weekend.
We don’t want to play a general after a battle, but it was suspected that ‘Blue Beetle’ wouldn’t do well commercially, despite the fact that it’s undoubtedly the best-reviewed DC movie since last year’s ‘The Batman’ or, if we stick only to Dceu, since 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad,’ which was also commercially unsuccessful, although that movie was released in theaters and on the HBOMax streaming service simultaneously. This certainly puts a big question on the future of Blue Beetle in Dcu,...

Wrecking Crew is described as a buddy comedy, with other details kept under wraps.
Bautista was recently in theaters with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while Momoa played the antagonist in this summer’s Fast X and has Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom due out in December.

Angel Manuel Soto is a filmmaker who directs to capture specific, authentic experiences, especially if they relate to his heritage. Born in Puerto Rico, many of Soto’s earliest short films – including several non-narrative works such as “The Second Line: A Parade Against Violence” – as well as his feature directorial debut, “La Granja,” contrast a pride in his Latin roots against the inequalities that come with it.

The first reactions to DC Studios’ “Blue Beetle,” starring Xolo Maridueña, are flying in, with early viewers calling the film a “huge surprise.” While some of the reactions quibble with parts feeling shaky or playing things a bit too silly, they mostly praise the film’s action, heart and specific touchstones to Latino culture.
The film, which hits theaters on Aug. 18, follows teenager Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) and his encounter with an alien relic that attaches to his body, bestowing the adolescent with extraordinary powers. Blue Beetle, notably, is one of the most preeminent Latino superheroes in comic book history. The rest of the “Blue Beetle” cast is predominantly Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

With Blue Beetle set to hit theaters in just one week, the first reactions to the DC movie have begun to emerge on social media. The reaction has been quite positive overall, as it usually is at this stage, but those who saw the film have praised it as fun, hilarious, and a love letter to Latino culture.
I was so profoundly moved how the film also captured our latinidad and nuance. A star is born in Xolo Maridueña and I hope he continues in the role in the future Dcu.

The #BlueBeetle movie is mostly a blast.
Some is too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!). Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome.
Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun. pic.twitter.com/5qzWIkmDyE

#BlueBeetle is my favorite post-Nolan DC film.

“Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto is rolling solo during his film’s promotional tour and he wishes he was sharing the moment with his stars amid the double strikes. “It’s unfortunate that the strike happened right before we started promoting the movie,” Soto told TheWrap in an interview during the film’s promo stop in Dallas.
Of course, everybody would love for it to happen after the movie premieres, so that at least our actors have the time to shine and to be celebrated and see how most people are connecting with their stories,” Soto continued. “A lot of these young kids that are watching the movie see themselves represented in them [the characters] because it’s a beautiful experience I’ve been able to witness.”
The Boricua filmmaker from Santurce, Puerto Rico still has stops to make in Miami, Toronto, and New York before the film’s gala premiere in Los Angeles next week.

Although many DC Universe projects have been left up in the air under Peter Safran and James Gunn’s new leadership, the upcoming Blue Beetle film is not one of them.
Director Angel Manuel Soto recently told Total Film magazine that the Xolo Maridueña-led movie is absolutely a part of that world and conversation. He said, “We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the Dcu.”
Soto continued, “But we are not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”
The filmmaker also teased his hopes for the future of the franchise, which includes a potential trilogy.
