At the heart of The Acolyte, the all-new Star Wars series on Disney+, there are myriad mysteries at play. Which masked figure is killing the Jedi? How does the peaceful High Republic era of the galaxy give way to the political turmoil of The Phantom Menace, 100 years down the line? And what’s the deal with Amandla Stenberg’s Mae, the enigmatic assassin seen doing serious damage to several Jedi Masters in the show’s action-packed trailers?
Empire sat down with Stenberg to tease out some early information about her part to play in the story, devised by series creator Leslye Headland – also discussing the unique way she was cast in the show, her ‘adorable’ martial arts master, and the time she teared up while meeting Lucasfilm legend Dave Filoni.

We're now just two weeks away from the premiere of the latest Disney+ live-action Star Wars series, and Lucasfilm has debuted an exciting first clip from the show along with a new TV spot.
In the extended sneak peek, we find Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) engaged in fierce combat with Mae (Amandla Stenberg), his former apprentice.
Or at least, who he believes to be his former apprentice!
Possible spoilers follow.
Based on what we can gather from recent leaks and the character name subtitle in last week's TV spot, this is not actually Mae at all, but her sister. Rumor has it that Stenberg is playing a dual role as a pair of twins, one good and one evil (the titular Acolyte), with the former blamed for her sibling's sinister actions.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is an upcoming Disney+ TV series set in the expansive Star Wars universe. The project has been in discussion since 2019, following the premiere of ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ when Leslye Headland, a devoted fan of the franchise, expressed her interest.
This series marks the first live-action exploration of the High Republic Era and the second overall within the Star Wars universe. Set approximately 100 years before the events of ‘Episode I: The Phantom Menace,’ ‘The Acolyte’ delves into a lesser-explored period of the Star Wars timeline. Known as the Golden Age of the Jedi, this era signifies the peak of the Jedi Order’s power and influence.
Despite exploring relatively uncharted territory, promotional materials for the show have received mixed reviews, at best. Fans have criticized the focus on female characters, certain timeline details, and the inclusion of Sith. A recent controversy arose over the introduction of the lightwhip into the series.

A lot of footage has been released from The Acolyte recently, but Disney and Lucasfilm may have dropped a major spoiler for the next Star Wars TV series.
Speculation has been running rampant for a while now about Amandla Stenberg potentially playing two characters in the show, and it looks like she will indeed be portraying twins. The theory stems from the fact recent previews have shown Mae sporting different clothing and what seems to be a contrasting personality in those scenes.
As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the subtitles for The Acolyte's latest TV spot have confirmed Stenberg isn't Mae in those scenes, she's "Osha." Disney moved quickly to remove the spoiler, though the Loth-cat is very much out of the bag at this stage.

The recent release of the trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ showcased plenty of action, aligning with creator Leslye Headland’s previous assurances. However, the trailer also unveiled something unexpected—a mistakenly included subtitle.
At the 0:20 mark, Amandla Stenberg, set to portray Mae, former padawan of Lee Jung-jae’s Master Sol, is heard saying, “I didn’t do it.” However, the subtitle mistakenly attributed the dialogue to “Osha” instead of Mae.
So, what’s the significance of this subtitle? If you’ve been following ‘Acolyte,’ you’ll know that one of the show’s major mysteries revolves around the killing of Jedi—someone is hunting them down and eliminating them.
‘The Acolyte’ has been teased in the trailers as a dark force user who is likely responsible. Fans have long speculated that Mae, a character hinted to be this “dark force user,” actually has a twin sister named Osha,...

With Star Wars: The Acolyte just a couple of weeks away, another new TV spot is doing the rounds on social media which showcases Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh's Lightwhip.
As we first explained on SFFGazette.com, it's been established that Lightwhips are a heavily modified lightsaber variant with multiple plasma blades in flexible containment shields. Due to the blades' flexibility, they require more care to use than a regular lightsaber and have less cutting power.
With a history dating back to the "Sith Wars," Lightwhips were particularly associated with the Nightsisters of Dathomir, though Jedi have been known to use them as well. High Republic Era Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh is among them and was able to modify her lightsaber to have an additional whip mode after learning the design in a Force vision.

“Star Wars: The Acolyte” stands out for several reasons, primarily as the first live-action series (second overall) set in the High Republic era, a period defined by the Jedi Order’s zenith.
The premise revolves around a mysterious force hunting Jedi across the galaxy, promising a dark, detective-style narrative. Director Leslye Headland suggests viewers will sympathize with the underdog and even the “bad guy” in this intriguing tale.
A recent trailer for the show hinted at the introduction of the “Lightwhip,” a distinctive and significant weapon historically associated with Vernestra Rwoh, a character faithfully adapted from the books and set to have a prominent role in ‘The Acolyte.’
Lightwhips are exceptional weapons crafted from lightsaber energy, resembling traditional whips. Originally utilized by Jedi during the Sith Wars, they proved effective against specific Sith techniques. Although rare among Jedi by the High Republic Era, they found adoption by the Nightsisters, a...

In the Star Wars universe, the lightsaber is an iconic part of the series as the weapon is not merely a tool used in the battle between a Sith and a Jedi. The glowing blade with striking colors like green, blue, purple, and red, captures the attention of the audience and the distinctive sound adds to its popularity.

The Disney-acquired Star Wars live-action lore is unarguably really trying to tighten its grip around the fandom. However, that doesn’t seem to be working, considering fans’ reaction to its latest and upcoming series, with very few series and fans as an exception. Even The Acolyte, which is the next series lined up for release this year from the saga, is ceasing to amuse fans.

This stands true because, even before its final release, this soon-to-hit-streaming series has gained massive criticism from fans because of all the changes it will be bringing to the previously massively fan-favorite lore. What’s worse is that this criticism doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, considering how Jimmy Kimmel recently added even more misery to this project with his roasting.

The theme of Disney’s 2024 upfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday was “connections” — and not just because of the running bit started by “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney, which involved their constant replaying of a five-second ad spot that said “Connections!” with a Disneyified logo and voiceover.
No, the symbol of unity across Disney’s brands was made up of a slew of announcements from Marvel, and about such other high-wattage projects as “Star Wars,” “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” the “Wizards of Waverly Place” sequel series, “9-1-1,” Ryan Murphy’s new slate of FX titles and more franchises with intersecting talent.

The next live-action Disney+ Star Wars series, The Acolyte, is set to premiere on June 5, and Lucasfilm has now released two new teasers, one of which might confirm (or at least hint at) a recent rumor that's been doing the rounds.
Possible spoilers follow.
The first promo once again sees Master Sol vow to track down his wayward apprentice, Mae, who has seemingly fallen to the Dark Side and become the titular acolyte (which she is referred to as for the first time here). We then see Mae confronted at the edge of a snowy cliff, where she professes her innocence: "I didn't do it... believe me!"
If she is being sincere here, it might just confirm a persistent rumor that actress Amandla Stenberg will actually play a dual role as twins, which means Mae could have an evil sister out there taking down Jedi and framing her sibling for the murders.

Lucasfilm released a new trailer for The Acolyte yesterday (see below) to mark this year's Star Wars Day celebrations, and a new poster for the next live-action Disney+ Star Wars series has now been unveiled at Ccxp Mexico.
Some fans on social media initially attempted to pass this off as our first look at Darth Plagueis, but a closer look (see the knives?) reveals that it's actually Amandla Stenberg's character, Mae.
Possible spoilers ahead.
Speaking of Master Sol's former apprentice, a rumor relating to this enigmatic Force-wielder has re-emerged with some additional details. According to Daniel Richtman, both Stenberg and Manny Jacinto will actually play dual roles as two pairs of twins - one good, one evil.

To mark this year's Star Wars Day celebrations, Lucasfilm has released a brand-new trailer and poster for its next live-action Disney+ Star Wars series, The Acolyte.
In addition to some exciting lightsaber action, the teaser reveals more story details, as Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) vows to bring his wayward former apprentice Mae (Amandla Stenberg) to justice.
Mae doesn't appear to be the only one taking down Jedi, however, as we also get a first proper look at the mysterious Sith villain who is behind the murders. His (her?) face is obscured (with a mask not too dissimilar to the ones Kylo Ren and his Knights wore in the sequel trilogy), which may indicate that this formidable warrior will ultimately be unveiled as an already established character.

The dark side clouds everything, including the plot details of the newest Star Wars live-action series, The Acolyte. What we know for sure is that the eight-episode series helmed by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland is billed as a “mystery thriller” and follows a group of Jedi as they investigate a series of murders 100 years before The Phantom Menace. We also know that the central mystery involves a dangerous warrior named Mae, played by Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies), and the Sith’s plan to eventually eradicate the Jedi during the Prequel Trilogy era.
While The Acolyte‘s latest trailer, which released on Star Wars Day, doesn’t reveal too much more about the show, it does give us a few new hints about the story. After several "Star Wars" Disney+ shows set between the beginning of the prequel trilogy and the end of the sequel trilogy, the franchise is taking a bold step back in time with "The Acolyte." Set in the later years of the High Republic, around 100 years before the events of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," this story finds the Jedi at the height of their power and the dark side of the Force seemingly banished to the deepest shadows.

With now just one month to go until Star Wars: The Acolyte premieres on Disney+, a new banner has surfaced (via SFFGazette.com) highlighting the show's leads...and potentially its mysterious villain!
Mae, Sol, Venestra, Jecki, Indara, Yord, Kelnacca and Mother Aniseya are among those featured, but to the right of Sol is a mysterious figure clad in all black and wielding the red lightsaber we're betting is the same one featured in the trailers. Could this be our first look at The Acolyte's Sith baddie?
It seems likely, particularly with a helmet that instantly brings up memories of Darth Vader and the Sith Inquisitors. In fact, on closer inspection, it almost seems to boast a toothy grin, a sign perhaps that whoever is beneath the mask has a monstrous side.

Star Wars: The Acolyte Leaked Footage Features An Intense Force Battle And A Badass Carrie-Anne Moss
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returns to theaters this weekend to celebrate its 25th anniversary. With a month or so before The Acolyte premieres on Disney+, Lucasfilm is looking to build hype for that by attaching an extended preview to the 1999 movie.
Now, that sneak peek has leaked online (via SFFGazette.com) and it features an edge-of-your-seat clash.
The clip kicks off with Amandala Stenberg's Mae entering a cantina and approaching a hooded figure who we soon learn is Carrie-Anne Moss's Jedi Master Indara.
A fight ensues which highlights martial arts and the Force, with Indara eventually wielding her green lightsaber as the footage comes to an end (it's then followed by a previously released trailer). The action here is top-notch and may sway those who have written The Acolyte off before it's even begun.

The Disney+ era of "Star Wars" has by all accounts been a mixed bag, but upcoming murder mystery series "The Acolyte" seems like a promising addition to the universe's canon for a few key reasons. Among them is its dynamic and ambitious action, which has been hyped in pre-release press and is briefly on display in the show's first trailer. In it, warriors draw their lightsabers against an unseen force in the forest, two fighters face off in a wuxia-inspired showdown, and at one point a character even pulls a knife -- a rarity in this world of Force and saber-driven violence.
The "Acolyte" cast has admitted that one of the saga's most famous fights, the showdown between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul in the imperfect yet vital prequel "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," was both a reference point during production and a bar they...

The new "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" knows the truth that we all figured out in 2016 but then apparently forgot: Manny Jacinto should be in everything.
The actor, who put in one of the funniest TV performances of the past decade as Jason Mendoza in "The Good Place," hasn't appeared on screen nearly often enough since that sitcom's end, but "The Acolyte" is about to change that. The upcoming Disney+ series features an impressive ensemble cast, including "Bodies Bodies Bodies" star Amandla Stenberg, "Logan" breakout Dafne Keen, and "The Matrix" series alum Carrie-Anne Moss. Then there's Jacinto, who plays Qimir, a former smuggler whose life has seemingly settled down since he started working in the trading world (per ComicBook.com).
A mention of Qimir's newly comfortable status in his character biography implies that the former criminal wasn't always well-off. Jacinto seems to confirm as much in a new interview with Total Film.

With The Acolyte expected to drastically alter the beloved franchise by departing from George Lucas’ original vision, fans of the film series have all the reason to be giddy with anticipation. The upcoming series will differ from all previous Star Wars stories, according to the showrunner, Leslye Headland. She also revealed that it will stray from one of Lucas’ central ideas regarding the ‘Force’.
A great deal of the Force’s mystery was maintained throughout the original Star Wars trilogy. Even so, a lot more is now understood about it than in the past, particularly with the introduction of midi-chlorians in The Phantom Menace. One thing everyone can agree on when it comes to the prequel trilogy is that George Lucas put his heart into those films, which can’t be said for the recent Star Wars flicks from Disney. But before departing from the iconic IP, Lucas also had plans on how the sequel trilogy would pan out, and while Disney did agree to respect his original wishes, unfortunately, it wasn’t the case.
Furthermore, following the failure of The Rise of the Skywalker, Lucasfilm strayed away from big-screen releases and shifted its focus to the small screen. But had Lucas’ original plans been incorporated, the sequel trilogy would’ve shattered stereotypes by introducing a new Darth Vader.
