Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. In the hours after the announcement of the nominees for the 77th annual awards, we reflect on the omissions that stung the most, the long-shot picks we were most proud of predicting and discuss the early state of the Best Musical race.
Sam Eckmann: David, I have spent the morning pouring over the 2024 Tony nominations and switching between delight and disbelief when I look at the surprises and omissions in this lineup. It’s safe to say that this was by far the most packed and competitive season we have covered together, so while I didn’t get a perfect score with my predictions, I was more than happy with my performance. While there is much to cheer in these nominations, I can’t help but feel sad for many people.

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Each season of Broadway brings about a slate of unexpected performances and plenty of unforgettable moments. While the 2016-2017 season didn’t see any new show rise to Hamilton-like popularity -- it’s hard for any TV show, film or stage production to reach that level of pop culture zeitgeist -- there are plenty of standout showcases of what fans have come to know and love about the New York City theater scene.
Perhaps the biggest breakout of the season is Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, the musical adaptation of a section from Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace that earned 12 Tony Award nominations, including nods for Best Musical as well as for its cast (Josh Groban, UnREAL breakout Denée Benton and Lucas Steele). “I always dreamed of playing roles like Natasha,” says Benton, a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, who plays the titular hopelessly romantic ingénue.

By the time she was cast as a heroic pilot in the musical Come From Away, first-time Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella had played both Amelia Earhart and Peter Pan onstage. “There’s just something about me being up in the air that feels right,” Colella tells Et.
Many agree with her, clearly. The role of Beverley Bass, the first woman promoted to the position of captain at American Airlines, has already earned Colella the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle’s Craig Noel Award, for Away’s 2015 world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse, and the Helen Hayes Award, for its subsequent staging at Washington’s Ford’s Theatre. For the current Broadway production, Colella has received the Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding featured actress in a musical; she’s now up for a Drama Desk Award as well as a Tony.

The tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, may not seem like the obvious inspiration for a feel-good musical — but the heartwarming true story behind the sold-out Broadway hit Come from Away is a tale of generosity and kindness that’s stayed largely under-the-radar for years.
With critics singing its praises, celebrity visitors already flocking to it (including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who brought first daughter Ivanka Trump and Un ambassador Nikki Haley to Wednesday’s performance) and a Tony nomination all but guaranteed, Come from Away is already on track to be one of Broadway’s biggest success stories of the year.

Opening tonight on Broadway, Come From Away spotlights the town of Gander, Newfoundland, which became the temporary home of over 6,000 passengers whose planes were rerouted during the 911 attacks. In its dramatization of real-life figures such as Beverley Bass, a stranded pilot portrayed by Jenn Colella, and Claude Elliott, the Gander mayor brought to life by Joel Hatch, the musical provides a historical recount of the week following 911, heavily inspired by true stories of the compassion and camaraderie that came about in Gander.

I know, I know, this isn't really a song about Christmas, but's it's a standout from Carol Hall's wonderful 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' score I used to sing this song with a vocal trio, and everytime we'd get to 'Maybe I'll count the stars until dawn. Me, I will go on,' my eyes would well with tears. It's a song of passion, strength and looking forward to brighter days. If that's not what this season is about, I don't know what is. In this clip, Jenn Colella, Adrienne Warren and Keala Settle perform the song on the Birdland stage for the Lilly Awards. Three better singers, you won't find.

In a heartbeat, 38 planes with 6,579 passengers were stranded in a remote town in Newfoundland. The locals opened their hearts and homes, hosting this international community of strangers-spurring unexpected camaraderie in extraordinary circumstances. Jenn Colella and Rodney Hicks are deep in rehearsals for the D.C. premiere of Come From Away and took some time out to chat about their experience with the show.
