Big-budget period action film “The Sand Murmurs” is set to start production in China’s remote region of Xinjiang later this month.
The film is the tale of a soldier and an enemy nobleman brought together after a once-in-a-century sandstorm. After braving a near-death experience together, the pair find common purpose despite their differences. They also need to work together to find their way out across 800km of desert.
The picture is directed by Wu Youyin as an adaptation of his novel of the same title. Wu previously wrote and directed “Till The End of the World,” which released in 2018.
Deploying a budget of some $40 million, the new picture is produced by Eastern Grace Film. The company has interests in production, promotion and distribution and a stated mission of promoting Chinese culture and beauty to the world.
The film’s cast is headed by Deng Chao, Rong Zishan and Yang Zishan.

China’s Lunar New Year box office got off to a solid start Sunday despite ongoing concerns over the Covid wave sweeping the country. An especially strong and diverse slate of local holiday blockbusters is giving the Chinese film industry the boost it so desperately needs after a prolonged period of market damage during last year’s lockdowns.
Frank Guo’s big-budget sci-fi spectacle The Wandering Earth 2, starring Wu Jing and Andy Lau, rocketed to the front of the pack with a 69.7 million opening day, according to data from tracking firm Artisan Gateway. But Chinese filmmaking legend Zhang Yimou’s latest feature, Full River Red, a period comedy thriller, was close behind with a strong 59.3 million start. Both films have been enthusiastically received— Full River Red has social scores of 9.6 on Maoyan, 9.5 on Alibaba’s Tao Piao Piao app and 8 from Douban, while Wandering Earth 2 sits at 9.4, 9.7 and 8.3, respectively — suggesting that a close,...

Disney’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” has been given permission to extend its current run in mainland Chinese cinemas beyond the 30-day theatrical period normally granted to Hollywood films imported into the country.
Such decisions are in the gift of the government regulators that oversee the sector and which have blocked Disney’s Marvel movies from playing in China for more than three years.
A spokesman for Disney in Asia confirmed to Variety that it has been informed of an additional 30 days of play for “Avatar 2.” Non-governmental sources have told Variety that the DreamWorks animation-produced “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” has also been granted an extension, though specifics were unavailable.
Such extensions are far from unprecedented and appear to be granted when a longer run could be viewed as beneficial to Chinese cinema operators or to a Chinese investor or co-producer.

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has continued to make solid gains at China’s box office, even in the face of a catastrophic wave of Covid-19 infections. The Disney tentpole added 16.5 million in its fourth weekend, nudging its total to 189.4 million, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
After some wild swings in early forecasting, leading Chinese ticketing app Maoyan now projects Avatar 2 to top out at 222 million (Rmb 1.51 billion). That’s the most of any Hollywood film of the pandemic era (Universal’s Jurassic World: Dominion sits in second place with 157.6 million), as well as an improvement upon the 202 million that the first Avatar film earned in China way back in 2009.
But the ongoing Covid outbreak’s toll on the sequel’s earnings is starkly apparent when you consider that China has more than 10 times as many movie screens today than it did in 2009, and that...

In the early 1990s, the performance of the Chinese men’s table tennis team was at a historic all-time low. As the head coach during that time of crisis, Cai Zhenhua was entrusted with the challenging task of forming a new team. With the year half over, it's time to look back on the first six months and what treasures they brought us. Here are the 19 performances by actors we liked most at the movies thus far this year. We hope you'll sound off on these and share a few of your own in the comments... and we hope this list serves as a reminder to Oscar, Globe, critics, and SAG voters that amazing performances can happy at any time of the year. Why wait til December to start considering your "Best of" ballot? We're not saying that all 19+ of these fellows deserve prizes, just that everyone should be keeping lists of standouts for their own pleasure and edification and to combat faulty memories as the year progresses.

"A duel between our chief commanders... means war." Well Go USA has debuted a brand new, official Us trailer for Zhang Yimou's latest film, a historical fantasy drama titled Shadow - originally Ying in Chinese. This premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals last fall, and also stopped by Fantastic Fest, Busan, and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. The film is a re-imagining of the classic Three Kingdoms story from Chinese history, and is another martial arts epic. The story is about a king and the people's struggle for their rightful land, as told through the perspectives of the king, his sister, his commander, the entrapped women of the palace, and a commoner. It's filmed in a unique "Chinese watercolor" style with a muted style resembling a B&W look (though it does have some color). The cast includes Ryan Zheng, Chao Deng, Qianyuan Wang, Jun Hu, Xiaotong Guan,...

I've got a fantastic first trailer here for you to watch for a new supernatural martial arts thriller called Shadow. The film comes from director Zhang Yimou who has previously brought us films such as Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, Matt Damon's The Great Wall and the Christian Bale's The Flowers of War. He's going back to his roots with this new film and it looks like it could be stunning!
I absolutely love what I'm seeing in this first trailer. It looks like it was beautifully shot and there's sure to be some incredibly cool fight choreography. On top of that, the story looks intriguing!

Eddie Peng and Deng Chao star in Duckweed, which is a vigilante comedy heading to theaters on January 28. A new trailer looks quite slick. That description comes via our editor Todd Brown, and it's justified by the mix of action, comedy and drama in the full trailer. Interestingly, the first trailer, released recently, presents the movie, accompanied by a melodramatic song, as a lush romance of some sort. Both trailers come courtesy of Hong Kong Cinema. More information comes from A Virtual Voyage, which says that the alternate English title is Ride the Winds Break the Waves. Here is their description of the film: Deng Chao plays a racing driver and his profession is not understood by his father (Eddie Peng). In order to...

A wacky fantasy lark, half screwball comedy, half Looney Tunes. Chinese audiences have thrown half a billion dollars at it. Prepare for Hollywood imitators. I’m “biast” (pro): have enjoyed Stephen Chow’s other movies
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
What are the biggest movies on the planet right now? If you said 1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens and 2) Deadpool, you’d be correct. But you may have trouble guessing No 3, because it has barely made a blip in North America or the U.K. The Mermaid has, however, just passed the half-a-billion (in U.S. dollars) mark at the Chinese box office, after less than a month in release; it’s the first film ever to take in so much across any length of time there, and it’s waaay more than Star Wars has earned there. With an engaging mix of goofy comedy, charming romance and a heartfelt, if somewhat trite, message of ecological sanity, Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid has achieved massive financial success. After less than two weeks in release, it has become the highest-grossing Chinese language film in history, soaring past last summer’s Monster Hunt. The story of a mermaid sent by her people to assassinate the real estate developer who has been trashing their home waters, but who instead falls in love with the guy and leads him to a new ecological awareness, the film lacks much of the anarchic edge or verbal dexterity of Chow’s early mo lei tau comedies, or the transcendent martial arts climaxes of his Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. It is nonetheless packed to the gills with the kind of moment-to-moment weirdness that characterizes Hong Kong cinema in general and the films of Stephen Chow in particular,...

Stephen Chow is the rightful successor to David Zucker and Mel Brooks. He doesn’t possess the same mainstream cachet, but the Chinese auteur has built a career on films that, at their best, work as story-driven slapstick. Chow’s films find the liminal space between madcap Looney Tunes cartoons and Eastern-indebted melodramas. As much an apostle of Douglas Sirk in his penchant for languid romance as a yuk-crazy prankster like Brooks, he knows how to mine the heart of relationships as often as he can find the natural (or unnatural) intersection of comedy and drama.
Chow’s latest, The Mermaid, is an anomaly in a few respects. Coming just months after the previous record-breaker in China, Monster Hunt, The Mermaid is now the highest-grossing film in the country’s history. It’s disappointing, then, that it trickled out with minimal fanfare into a few dozen specialty theaters in the U.

What the heck is this? The full official trailer for Stephen Chow's wacky new film has arrived online. After bringing us Kung Fu Hustle and CJ7, Stephen Chow's latest work is about a genetically engineered mermaid program run by a madman, called The Mermaid. While there are no English subtitles on this, the footage more than speaks for itself and it's not that appealing, I have to admit. It seems to be some kind of mix of Human Centipede (or Tusk) and Pirates of the Caribbean, but set in the real world. I don't really know. The cast includes Kris Wu, Chao Deng, Show Luo & Ke Bai. Give this trailer a look below if you're curious. Here's the first official trailer for Stephen Chow's The Mermaid, found on YouTube (via Twitch): Hin's real estate project involves reclamation of the sea. This threatens the livelihood of the...

Stephen Chow, the talented filmmaker who brought us the awesome screwball action films Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, has made a new film called The Mermaid. It’s another adventure film packed full of all kinds of wonderful weirdness. If you’ve enjoyed the previous films Chow has made, then I’m sure you’ll like what this one has to offer. Chow has a lot of fun with his movies and they include a lot of physical and visual comedy with over-the-top special effects and action. The Mermaid looks a little more serious than some of his previous films, and I’m curious to see how it turns out. Chow has been working on this film project for the past three years, so he's definitely put a lot of work into it.

Cartoony isn’t an unusual way to describe Stephen Chow’s modern screwball masterpieces – Kung Fu Hustle often felt like a full-length live action Looney Tunes bit – but Chow’s latest, The Mermaid, looks like one of the first times when his fantastical aesthetic could get in the way of the storytelling. We previously wrote about a teaser in December, which was charming and kooky in all the right ways, but this new trailer, frankly, looks like a bit of a mess.
Maybe it’s just the Chinese trailer, but it’s a jarring meld of tone and aesthetic with a scolding environmental subtext, ominous piano keys, and a visual style that at worse, looks plastic and cheap; and at best, resembles a less elegant version of Tsui Hark’s supernatural action-adventures.

It feels like its been forever since we last saw Sammo on the big screen yet he’s actually had roles in a few films over the last few years – Rise of the Legend, Once Upon a time in Shanghai . In those films though Sammos role was only in supporting, but now he’s back in lead and damn does this look good.
Sammo brings Andy Lau along for the ride (fresh of the excellent ‘ Saving Mr Wu‘). This is our first look official look at the film and based on the trailer this could be something special indeed.
Notes: This is Sammo’s first directed film since Once Upon a time in China and America (1997), Andy Lau is also a producer.

With his unique brand of thrills and comedy on display in films like Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and Shaolin Soccer, the latest film from director Stephen Chow is always one to anticipate. Those in China will be getting one early next year with The Mermaid, and today brings the first entertaining teaser.
Said to follow a biological professor who discovers a real mermaid and falls in love, the first preview doesn’t reveal any of that story, but instead sets up quite a comedic scenario before getting a brief glimpse at the titular star. Hopefully arriving at film festivals in the United States sometime next year, check out the teaser trailer below for the film starring Deng Chao, Show Luo, Kris Wu, Lin Yun and Zhang Yuqi.
The Mermaid hits theaters on February 8th, 2016 in China.

With the sequel to Gordon Chan's martial arts fantasy The Four nearing release in Hong Kong the final poster for the film has arrived along with a series of striking - other than the font - illustrated character posters for all of the major players. One of which raises the question: What on earth is on Anthony Wong's arm? I haven't caught up with the original film yes so perhaps I'm missing something obvious but while the attachment has the look of an early machine gun the swirling patterns around it make me think ... vacuum cleaner? What on earth is that thing?Anthony Wong, Collin Chou, Chao Deng and Crystal Liu all return to reprise their roles from the first film. Check the new posters...

It's not often you get a solid genre crossover movie. While Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright have made a (wildly entertaining) hobby out of it, it's otherwise an uncommon occurrence. Therefore it's something of a pleasure for us to introduce to you Gordon Chan's The Four, which crosses espionage with superheroes, a counterfeiting scandal, kung fu, and zombies. If it seems a bit eclectic, that's because it is, but wonderfully so. The Four stars Deng Chao, Liu Yi Fei, Collin Chou, Ronald Cheng, and Anthony Wong, and it's all kinds of crazy. If you enjoy flicks like Woochi: The Demon Slayer or Kung Fu Hustle, The Four will be right up your alley.

I had held off a long time on getting a Blu-Ray player when Tom Stockman, my friend at We Are Movie Geeks, sent me a screener of The Four, in Blu-Ray format! So it was off to K-mart and then home to set up a new RCA Blu-Ray player, to take the place of my RCA dvd player, (also purchased at K-Mart by the way.) And quite honestly I cannot think of a better movie to christen my new player with than The Four, an amazing Hong Kong action movie that is also a political thriller, a police procedural, a historical epic, a romantic comedy, and a horror movie with a cast of well over a dozen major characters.
