Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror-genre streaming platform, continues to bolster its burgeoning lineup of original content; an endeavor that’s especially prudent as the theatrical distribution pipeline continues to be halted in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Indeed, its latest cinematic addition, Color Out of Space, brings a unique offering starring Nicolas Cage.
The exclusive streaming rights to director Richard Stanley’s extraterrestrial outbreak film, Color Out of Space, along with Frank Sabatella’s vampire-centric The Shed—each a production of Rjle Films—have been acquired by Shudder, which will make the movies available to stream in the U.S. later this year on a date to be determined.
As Shudder General Manager Craig Engler expresses of the acquisitions in a statement:

As an orphan living with his abusive grandfather, life sucks for Stan (Jay Jay Warren). But he’s got it better than his best friend Donmer who regularly needs defending against the school bullies. When Stan discovers a murderous creature has taken refuge inside his tool shed, he tries to battle the demon alone until Donmer (Cody Kostro) comes up with a far more sinister plan.
Part 976-Evil, part Fright Night, The Shed is something of a combination of old-school 80s monster horror and more modern “woke” horror, dealing with not only the effects having a vampire in your shed can have on your mental health but also how going to school with bullying assholes can effect your mental health too! Tormented at home and at school, a troubled teenager faces new challenges when a recently infected blood-sucker holes up at the bottom of the garden
Orphaned teenager Stan (Jay Jay Warren) has been forced to live with his abusive grandfather Ellis in a house on the edge of some nowheresville. At school, he and his slightly weedier friend, Dommer (Cody Kostro), are regularly bullied by a jock thug (Chris Petrovski) who, just to rub salt in the wounds, has a thing going with Roxy (Sofia Happonen), the girl Stan has had a crush on for years.
Into this classic teen-drama set up, writer-director Frank Sabatella injects a goofy horror element: a newly infected vampire (Frank Whaley), desperate to avoid burning sunlight, holes himself up in the shed at the bottom of Stan’s garden and starts picking off every creature that comes near, starting with an unfortunate alsatian dog.

Producer Peter Block has been a fixture in the realm of modern horror for decades now, and his latest project, The Shed, arrives in limited theaters and on VOD today, courtesy of Rlje Films. Written and directed by Frank Sabatella, The Shed follows a struggling teenager named Stan (Jay Jay Warren) who already has enough problems on his plate, but then he ends up having to contend with a vampire, which forces him to begin to deal with his issues head-on.
Earlier this week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Block about The Shed, and he discussed the collaborative process with Sabatella for the project, making a vampire film that harkened back to a different era in horror, and what excites him nowadays about the world of genre filmmaking.

You may remember that last month I conducted an interview with an artist by the name of Marc Schoenbach, who brilliantly captures the spirit of 80s horror VHS art, for the posters he designs for various new films. We learned in the interview that Schoenbach is a writer in addition to being an artist, and he's got a Halloween-themed short film headed our way this year that combines his talents.
Children of the Witch is the third annual Halloween short from Frank Sabatella's Sideshow Pictures - following 2011's Night of the Pumpkin and 2012's The House That Cried Blood. Written by Schoenbach and Sabatella, and directed by Sabatella, this year's short sees turn of the century trick or treaters returning from the grave - invading an all girls' slumber party at the behest of a vengeful witch.
Though Children of the Witch won't be available for consumption until the last week of October,...

Nostalgia is huge in both the horror community and the entire pop culture landscape of late, and a pretty incredible resurgence has been happening within the genre in the last few years – the resurgence of the VHS tape, and all of the awesomeness that it brought along with it back in the ever-so-glorious decade of the 1980s. Though the format should by all means be long dead and gone by now (with DVDs even in the process of being relatively obsolete), nostalgia has been keeping VHS and the entire era of its dominance alive and well – fans who grew up frequenting their local Mom & Pop video stores, holding on for dear life to something they have so many fond memories of. Despite the fact that the major distribution companies stopped putting their movies onto VHS nearly a decade ago, those diehard fans have been keeping the spirit of the format alive all by themselves,...

Damn you New York City traffic! Day one of the New York City Horror Film Festival, and you’re going to make me sit in two extra hours worth of traffic due to a disabled bus in the Lincoln Tunnel?! So are the trials and tribulations of a New Jersian, but you take the good with the bad, considering my refusal to walk into a film late and be the dick sitting down and asking the closest patron “So what did I miss?” Instead, I actually got to relax, meet a friend, grab a few pre-drinks, had a killer all beef burger infused with blue cheese crumbles and bacon, covered in frazzled onions and…Ok, sorry, getting distracted, New York City Horror Film Festival short films, right.
So, along with two full length feature films a night, audiences are also treated to a plethora of fantabulous horror shorts to set...

If the candy and the costumes and the fact that it's the only time of the year you can scatter bones in your front yard without having the neighbors alert the authorities aren't enough for you to look forward to Halloween, here's a new reason: Sideshow Pictures is promising to deliver a great short film each year, just in time for the holiday ... and the first one, Night of the Pumpkin, is ready to launch.
From reading the synopsis, the film sounds like some kind of splattery combination of Witchboard and Rubber (yeah…wrap your minds around that one). What we can guarantee is plenty of blood along with a gruesome growing gourd with nothing but bad intentions. Okay, I'm curious.
For those who want to join me in checking out this marauding jack-o-lantern, head over to Fangoria.com on October 25 and get your free viewing of the film. After...

Old school slasher isn't particularly scary or suspenseful as the film focuses more on over the top gore. It's most successful in terms of how lively, energetic and stylish the overall execution is, which makes it pretty easy to digest. However, Blood Night leaves viewers wanting something more. Filmmakers on the low-budget end of the horror genre have to employ certain tricks to create a visually intense final product that can rival those with more funding. Sometimes they get very creative to squeeze value from every last penny, which leads to innovation; but sometimes they resort to methods that make the film all but unwatchable and turn off the audience that took the chance on their film. Writer and Director Frank Sabatella should consider himself lucky if any audience is willing to watch his work ever again after the travesty that is Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, a film devoid of clever twists and filled with horrible acting, clichéd writing, and some of the worst visuals to come out of the horror genre in recent memory.
