The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

When costume designer Marina Toybina was tasked with building the Beast costume for ABC’s live action “Beauty and the Beast” broadcast, she looked beyond what Disney and the Broadway show had previously done. Instead, she found inspiration in puppetry.
Josh Groban, who played the enchanted prince-turned-Beast, would not be relying on prosthetics and makeup for his transformation. Toybina instead built a hollowed-out puppet that stood at around 10 feet tall. Within that, she ensured there was enough mobility for Groban, and with the aid of rods, he would be able to move the arms and feet, all built via a backpack structure. Says Toybina of the contraption, “I wanted to lean into the narrative that there’s this prince trapped inside of a beast.”
Getting the Beast’s head right proved to be a trial and error process for “The Masked Singer” costume designer. “How do we get the eye level right?...

This past summer, Disney and ABC announced that they would be celebrating the beloved animated film "Beauty and the Beast" with a TV special produced by "Crazy Rich Asians," "In the Heights," and "Wicked" filmmaker Jon M. Chu and directed by the 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony director Hamish Hamilton. Rather than commemorate the ground-breaking feature's 30th anniversary (which was last year), the two-hour hybrid animated/live-action special will celebrate the anniversary of the movie's Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Regardless of the reason, the Disney renaissance favorite is definitely worth celebrating.
For the live-action portion of the event, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-nominated performer Josh Groban will step into the role of the Beast alongside R&b artist H.E.R. as Belle. As ABC gears up for Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast: A 30th Celebration,” producer Jon M. Chu has confirmed that the hybrid live-action will feature a tribute to Angela Lansbury, who died in October. Lansbury voiced Mrs. Potts in the original 1991 animated feature.
“We definitely do a nod to her for sure. How could we not pay tribute?” Chu says.
The filmmaker, who has begun filming on his two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” offered some more details on the special: “We have some great cameos in this. Paige O’Hara, the voice of the original Belle, has a cameo. Composer Alan Menken does a little appearance.”
The other surprises will have to wait until the special airs Thursday night.
Described as “part animated film, part live-action spectacle,” the celebration features over 400 costumes by Marina Toybina. Chu and the creatives behind the special spoke to Variety about what to expect from the production.

ABC celebrates the 30th anniversary of “Beauty and The Beast” with a hybrid broadcast special.
The two-hour special, premiering Thursday, includes live never-before-seen musical performances and features brand-new sets inspired by the classic story. Costume designer Marina Toybina was tasked with creating original outfits that pay homage to the 1992 animated feature and heritage while having a modern touch. “90 were made from scratch and we’re looking at close to 400 costumes,” Toybina says of her designs.
Award-winning singer and songwriter H.E.R. will play Belle, Josh Groban is playing The Beast, Joshua Henry will play Gaston and Rita Moreno is the narrator.
Toybina revealed the famous Belle gown was inspired by Joan of Arc. “I decided to develop an armor-like bodice that goes in line with ‘Joan of Arc,’ Toybina teased as she breaks down her designs.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 6 premiere of “The Masked Singer.”)
The first contestant bumped off “The Masked Singer” Season 6 happens to be the one who sported the Fox singing competition’s tallest-ever costume: Los Angeles Lakers player Dwight Howard.
Of course, coming in at 6’ 10” when unmasked, it was only natural that the NBA star would need his “Masked Singer” look, Octopus, to at least match his height — if not tower over that stage even more than Howard already would without the more-than-8-foot-tall, eight-legged costume.
Luckily, “Masked Singer” costumer designer Marina Toybina was up for the challenge.
“Yes, we had conversations about the outfit,” Howard told TheWrap in an interview ahead of his “Masked Singer” Season 6 premiere unmasking. “I enjoyed the whole process of, you know, getting the color schemes and then trying to figure out how this outfit is going to work and everything. And it came out great.

“The Masked Singer” is now a two-time Emmy winner for its wild, wacky and breathtaking costumes. (We can already hear Piglet oinking in delight.) The costume design team, led by Marina Toybina (watch our recent interview), claimed its first trophy last year at the 2020 Creative Arts ceremony, but now this category has been changed to a juried award, so it gets voted on weeks before all of the other races. Fox’s “The Masked Singer” shares its second prize in the Variety/Nonfiction/Reality Costumes category with two other programs — Disney+’s “Black Is King” and IFC’s “Sherman’s Showcase Black History Month Spectacular” — since juries can choose to award all of the nominees, some of the nominees or none of the nominees. Costume designers for “Bridgerton,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Bridgerton explain the process behind their showstopping creations.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 5 season premiere of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 10 on Fox.
It’s not easy being seen: Kermit the Frog was the first celebrity to be unmasked on Season 5 of “The Masked Season,” as the hit Fox series returned on Wednesday night.
You read that right. “The Masked Singer” producers had been hyping this season as a “game changer,” and kicking things off with a Muppet definitely lives up to that.
Kermit wore the Snail costume, and sang “You Make My Dreams (Come True)” by Hall and Oates. Contemporary nods went to “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “The Prom.” And the sci-fi/fantasy nominees included “Dolittle,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Mulan,” “Pinocchio,” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”

“The Masked Singer” wrapped its fourth season last week with another big-name celeb being crowned the winner of the wacky Fox singing competition. And while we await that show’s Season 5 premiere next spring, its spinoff series, “The Masked Dancer,” will begin cutting a rug in its absence.
At first blush, “The Masked Dancer” might seem like the exact same show as “The Masked Singer,” except for, you know, dancing rather than singing. But it turns out there are several components to “Dancer” that deviate from “Singer’s” format.
Here to walk TheWrap — and all of you “Masked” fans — through the key differences is Craig Plestis, the executive producer who adapted “The Masked Singer” from its iconic South Korean format for U.S. audiences and who developed “The Masked Dancer,” which was originally a parody sketch on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” into the full-fledged competition that premieres Sunday.

Over the last three seasons of The Masked Singer, executive producer Craig Plestis has seen “the most bizarre pitch in television history” translate into one of TV’s biggest hits—a show that is as challenging to produce as it is fun to watch.
Based on a popular South Korean format, the reality singing competition features celebrities singing covers of well-known songs, while covered in elaborate costumes that conceal their identities. Each week, panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke try to identify the person behind the mask, learning their true identity only when they’re eliminated.
Hosted by Nick Cannon, the series earned costume designer Marina Toybina an Emmy nomination last year, for her incredibly memorable work—and this year, The Masked Singer broke into the category of Outstanding Competition Program. Bringing Plestis his first nod, this recognition speaks to the fact that the show is here to stay.

In something of a surprise, “The Masked Singer” cracked the Competition Series field for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards. Despite massive ratings for this era of broadcast television, the Fox network series wasn’t necessarily a favorite of the critics or industry. If it somehow manages to steal the Emmy from two-time winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the producers will need to find a way to get costume designer Marina Toybina a statue.
