Not every good film is necessarily a good time, and vice versa. On the latter front, see “Mothers’ Instinct,” a 1960s-set suburban psychodrama too silly to secure our belief and too reserved to pass muster as go-for-broke camp — but still compulsive enough, twisty enough and finally berserk enough to keep us hooked through all its tonal and narrative lane-changing. As a pair of model homemakers and next-door neighbors whose close friendship is severely undone by sudden tragedy, even stars Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain don’t always seem to be making entirely the same movie: Hathaway’s sly, high-gloss vamping points to a more brittly amusing one than Chastain’s earnest emotional commitment, turning their characters’ escalating picket-fence battle into a compelling tussle for the soul of the script itself. One wins, and not predictably so.

Thriller about rich suburban housewives whose picture-perfect lives belie past traumas lacks the self-awareness needed to prevent it from being utterly absurd
Here is a hilariously unsubtle and increasingly ridiculous psycho-melodrama of the 1960s American suburbs starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Some kind of cult status must be on the way, with emote-along midnight screenings, and maybe a new Catfight of the Year Oscar has to be brought in to reward it.
Mothers’ Instinct is written by Sarah Conradt and directed and shot by celebrated cinematographer Benoît Delhomme making his feature debut; it is partly based on the 2012 French-language thriller Derrière la haine (Behind the Hate) by Barbara Abel, and partly on a 2018 Belgian movie adaptation. Hathaway and Chastain play Celine and Alice respectively, two prosperous stay-at-home housewives giving it the full Betty Draper feminine mystique: they are friends with matching picture-perfect lives, each with an adored nine-year-old son,...

January Jones took aim at virtual auditions on Saturday, writing on her Instagram story, “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person.”
The “Mad Men” star continued, “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic. I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes.”
Since the pandemic, self-tapes have remained a common way for actors to audition for roles, rather than auditioning live in front of casting directors.

At first, the setting of “Hello Tomorrow” looks familiar. White picket fences border lush green yards. Classic cars cruise through the quaint neighborhood. A mother walks her baby in a sweet, blue bassinet… except the bassinet doesn’t have wheels. Neither do the cars. And those yards are being watered by flying robots, painted in pastel hues sure to please the Betty Draper-types who own them. (Not that Betty Draper takes kindly to hovering interlopers.)
Merging ’50s Americana with futuristic machinery, “Hello Tomorrow” comes across like “Mad Men” mixed with “The Jetsons” — a “retro future” that combines customs of the past with space-age technology… also of the past. The technology in Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen’s Apple TV+ series is the stuff of baby boomers’ imaginations, not Gen Z’s, meaning there’s no cell phones, internet, or even color TV. Over a decade later, and Elisabeth Moss still gets teary-eyed talking about Jon Hamm’s mentorship on “Mad Men.”
Moss starred as Peggy Olson, an up-and-coming copywriter who befriends her elusive boss, the advertising agency legend Don Draper (Hamm), who guides her career in the 1960s male-dominated industry. Peggy eventually parts ways with Don’s firm, leading to an emotional scene in Season 5, Episode 11, which originally aired in 2012.
Moss shared just how “real” the moment felt between her and Hamm during production.
“It all felt very real. I had a very close relationship with Jon,” Moss said during a Vanity Fair video. “There was sort of like a mentor/protégé relationship there, very older brother, little sister. And so it meant something to the both of us when we did this scene.”
While in character, Moss starts to tear up while Hamm kisses her hand after shaking it farewell.
“That right there is real.

It’s been almost 15 years since the Emmy-winning Mad Men premiered on AMC, and one of the show’s stars, Kiernan Shipka, is feeling nostalgic. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the Swimming With Sharks actress said she is open to reprising her role as Sally Draper, the daughter of the show’s main characters, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and Betty Draper (January Jones). Shipka had her own ideas about where life might have taken an adult version of Sally. “I’m not done with Sally,” the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina alum said. “I don’t think she’d be in New York. I think she’d do L.A. … But I’m not done with her at all.” There is no official word on whether a Mad Men spinoff is in the works, but the idea has been tossed around in the past. However, not all cast members are interested, including Hamm,...

When she finished recording her new album, Sara Evans decided to re-watch Mad Men and found herself thinking about embodying a character like the impeccably dressed, mysterious Betty Draper.

Outlander Season 5, Episode 12
Outlander brings Season 5 to a close with Claire’s abduction and the Mackenzies’ discovery of the finer points of time travel. While the very end of the episode gives the viewer hope that things for their favorite characters are on the way up, the journey there is filled with triggers and turmoil.
Fans who have not read the books have every right to question why the show would choose to air an episode where Claire, the matriarch of the story, is gang-raped on Mother’s Day. The decision to skip a week between Episodes 7 and 8 clearly caused this easily-avoidable extreme juxtaposition. It is also clear that the show’s writers’ room is willing to change so much about the book timeline but it refuses to change the...

Olivier Masset-Depasse’s Duelles is a product of the times. Though a homage to the thrillers of Hitchcock and the aesthetics of Sirk, Duelles’ conceit is one that banks on obsessions of current pop culture: nostalgia and the resurgence of female-led domestic thrillers. Its protagonist, Alice (Veerle Baetens), is basically a Belgian Betty Draper — with a house & style evocative of quintessential 50’s urban chic. Beyond the genteel veneer though, she is one that falls in line with the rest of Hitchcock’s Blondes — mysterious, contradictory, and beset by a disabling condition. Duelles opens to a fake-out, a pastiche to the tension-filled voyeuristic sequences of retro-thrillers. We see Alice peering through a window, eyes carefully stalking a brunette in...

Warning: The following contains massive spoilers for the Season 3 finale of Animal Kingdom. Watch first, read later — trust me.
Animal Kingdom’s Shawn Hatosy wasn’t exaggerating when he warned TVLine a couple of weeks ago that being under Smurf’s roof again would have a “scary effect” on Pope. And in Tuesday’s Season 3 finale — how can the season be over already?!? — we found out just how scary. The Last Man on Earth delivers another solid episode of the series, with a fun, new pairing and fantastic dramatic acting from Jason Sudeikis.
On The Last Man on Earth Season 4 Episode 16, Mike wants to leave to search for the heat signature he found on his thermal reader. Meanwhile, Gail and Melissa avoid their supply shopping duties, and Erica and Todd argue over the color of the baby's nursery.
There was a lot to love about this episode, but my favorite part was the pairing of Melissa and Gail.
The two of them are rarely together, and I loved watching them team up to skirt their responsibilities to the house.

O say, do those meth-scented khakis yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Some 10 years ago today, Breaking Bad aired its first episode – and the New Golden Age of Television turned a deeper shade of blue.
