Box office is big news this week, not so much for its totals as for its totemic significance. Throngs will greet Top Gun: Maverick, but will kids join the grownups to see a nearly 60 year-old actor starring in a sequel to a 36 year-old hit? At the other end of the audience spectrum, will seniors conquer their torpor to catch the new Downton and even lure their kids – the movie is dubiously titled Downton Abbey: A New Era to motivate the youth quadrant.
These are edgy days for an industry seeking clues to two big puzzles: Does a broad demographic truly crave a return to the cool comfort of their movie theaters? And, if so, what sorts of movies would best combat their streamer fatigue?

With the Hollywood Arclight already closed, now comes another blow to Los Angeles’ specialty cinema scene: The 12-screen Landmark Pico is closing at month’s end after 15 years, the chain said today.
Landmark Theatres’ flagship venue, which has been a destination for countless Academy screenings since 2007 in addition to Deadline’s Screening Series over the years, will be shuttered when its lease expires May 31.
“For months, we’ve worked to extend our tenancy of the Landmark Pico but have been unable reach terms,” Landmark Theatres’ President Kevin Holloway said in a statement. “We’re exploring opportunities to expand our Los Angeles footprint, which we hope to be able to share more on soon.”

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Thomas Newman’s score for Operation Mincemeat, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as Warner Bros. releases the film in the UK and Ireland.
Operation Mincemeat tells the extraordinary story of two intelligence officers that changed the course of World War II, saving tens of thousands of lives and breaking Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe by recruiting the skills of the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
For the drama, Newman looked to craft a striking orchestral score, which evoked intensely dramatic action, while befitting more nuanced moments. The film was directed by John Madden, with whom Newman had previously collaborated on titles including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Debt. “John Madden is the perfect collaborator. Whip-smart, full of humor and a savvy listener,” says the composer.

Exclusive: Netflix has struck a big deal for the Colin Firth World War II movie Operation Mincemeat, we can reveal.
The streamer has pre-bought North America and Latin America rights for around $15 million from The King’s Speech producer See-Saw and Cohen Media Group after seeing footage in recent days.
Shakespeare In Love and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel filmmaker John Madden directed the movie, which stars Oscar winner Firth alongside Succession star Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Penelope Wilton, Jason Isaacs, Johnny Flynn, Simon Russell Beale, Hattie Morahan, Mark Gatiss and Paul Ritter.
It has been 10 years since See-Saw and Firth teamed on multi-Oscar-winner The King’s Speech, and we hear this could be another potential awards pic. Over the past decade, New York real estate billionaire Charles S. Cohen has become a leading patron of art-house cinema. He has distributed a string of foreign language Oscar contenders, amassed a vast library of classic films and bought specialty theaters in the U.K., France and the U.S.
But greater prominence in the film industry invites greater scrutiny, especially now. In October, three female employees sued Cohen’s real estate company in federal court in New York, accusing Cohen of bullying and creating a hostile work environment for women.
Their claims echo those in three earlier lawsuits, which accused Cohen of firing people who took days off to get medical treatment. One of those suits also alleged that of the 50 employees in the company’s executive offices, none was Black. The company acknowledged that was true in a 2014 court filing.

Though the U.S. specialty theatrical market remains stagnant for the foreseeable future, two of the leading buyers of international art-house fare want to send a message to their French partners: We’re still here, and we’re looking to pick up.

Shares of AMC Entertainment surged Monday amid speculation that the country’s largest exhibition chain could be an acquisition target for Amazon.
Both companies did not immediately return requests for comment, and the report in the Daily Mail that goosed share prices indicated that Amazon’s interest may have waned. It noted, for instance, that it was unclear if talks between the companies were still active.
No matter. Even the hint that the world’s largest theater chain could be snapped up by the e-commerce giant was enough to leave investors salivating. Shares of AMC rocketed roughly 45% in early trading, topping out at more than $5.80.
For Amazon, which has had intermittent success in backing and releasing original films such as “Manchester by the Sea” and “The Big Sick,” owning AMC would give it a showcase for its major releases. Last year, the company started moving away from a traditional theatrical...

Exclusive: Real estate mogul and indie film distributor Charles S. Cohen, who bought the Landmark Theatre chain 14 months ago, made more waves in the exhibition space late last year when he acquired flagship UK art house exhibitor and distributor Curzon.
In one of his first interviews since the acquisition, we spoke with Cohen about the Curzon buy and strategy, the landscape for independent exhibition and distribution, and Cohen Media Group’s growing production plans.
The tireless investor and owner of Cohen Brothers Realty Corporation, is well known as a supporter and lover of independent film. He also has business interests in wine, fashion, lighting and luxury goods.
As a side note, during the wide-ranging conversation (which was just before Curzon’s massive run with Parasite), I was wide of the mark in my spontaneous guess at the Curzon deal price. In hindsight, it would naturally be much more than I...

If you haven't heard of Avenue, you're not alone. Established in 1976, the lifestyle glossy has, for the last few decades, chronicled New York society goings-on and been delivered monthly "to Manhattan’s most exclusive buildings where average household income is $1.7 million," former umbrella company Manhattan Media boasted.
A new owner, however, is looking to broaden the magazine's readership and introduce it to a new generation. In December 2018, Charles S. Cohen, the billionaire real estate and entertainment mogul who owns Cohen Media Group, Landmark Theatres and Curzon Cinemas, bought the title with the intent ...

British arthouse theater chain Curzon has been bought by Cohen Media Group in a deal that also includes Curzon’s distribution arm and its streaming service. The purchase adds 20 cinemas and 46 screens to the stable of Cohen Media Group, which almost exactly a year ago acquired Landmark Theatres in the U.S.
Financial details of the Curzon deal were not disclosed. But it spells the end of the involvement of the Wingate family in the chain, 85 years after Harold Wingate founded the Mayfair cinema in London to screen imported films. Charles Cohen, the owner and chairman of Cohen Media Group, assumes the role of chairman of Curzon, replacing Roger Wingate. CEO Philip Knatchbull will remain in post.
“Among exhibitors and distributors of great films, there are few names in the international marketplace as important as Curzon and Curzon’s Artificial Eye,” its distribution arm, Cohen said. “We are thrilled to unite with this honored brand,...

The Curzon group, the UK’s flagship arthouse film company, has been acquired by U.S. indie distributor and exhibitor Cohen Media Group.
The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, comprises Curzon Cinemas, distributor Artificial Eye and the Curzon Home Cinema streaming platform. The UK chain currently operates 20 theaters and 46 screens in and around London.
Curzon’s chairman Roger Wingate will be stepping down, thus ending an almost 80-year family association with the group. Cohen Media Group owner Charles S. Cohen will assume the position of chairman.
Given that Cohen Media Group releases many of the same films as Curzon, Cohen said he believes the deal can herald “a new powerhouse in international distribution.”
According to the real estate developer, whose fortune is estimated to be $3.4Bn, Curzon will expand in a “thoughtful and measured way”. Curzon CEO Philip Knatchbull added that Curzon “is easily transportable and scalable outside the U.
