Post on social news website about Us marines going back in time to destroy the Roman empire optioned by film studio
In the past decade Hollywood has given us movies that began life as theme-park rides, board games, magazine articles, and even self-help books. Now get ready for the next wave of tech-flavoured source materials for future blockbusters after studio Warner Bros optioned a high-concept time travel story based on a long-running Reddit thread.
The idea originated when James Irwin, an author and two-time champion on the Us TV quiz show Jeopardy from Des Moines, Iowa, attempted to answer the question: "Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern Us Marine infantry battalion" on the popular social news and entertainment website. Funnily enough, I just suffered through the found footage horror film Apollo 18 for the first time last weekend. Now the writer of that atrocious film has been hired to do a rewrite of a time travel film called Rome, Sweet Rome, a story based on an idea that started on the popular website Reddit. It sounds a bit silly, but the pitch from first-time screenwriter, author and Jepoardy champion James Erwin started from several posts on the site asking the question, "What if a unit of U.S. Marines are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions?" The answer is they get a motion picture deal at Warner Bros. Variety reports Brian Miller is rewriting the film from scratch since the first run by Erwin didn't seem like it was exactly what the studio wanted. This time, Miller's take (which is as fresh as...

The Internet is generally a place to discuss movies once they've already been made, but every now and then it can go in reverse. After a Reddit thread inspired writer James Erwin to write a spec screenplay called Rome, Sweet Rome, Warner Bros. picked up the rights to the film-- and now another screenwriter has been hired to help turn it into an actual film, where inevitably, it will be discussed at length on Reddit. According to Variety the studio has brought in Brian Miller, who is credited with the critically abhorred Apollo 18, to take another crack at Rome Sweet Rome. The story spurs from the simple question posed on Reddit: "What if a unit of U.S. Marines are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions?" But given that Miller is reportedly writing a brand new draft, without ever looking at Erwin's original,...

Ubisoft Motion Pictures and New Regency have hired acclaimed English playwright Michael Lesslie to pen the upcoming film version of the "Assassin's Creed" video game series.
A search is currently underway for a director on the project which Michael Fassbender will star in and produce.
Meanwhile, "Apollo 18" screenwriter Brian Miller has come onboard to rewrite James Erwin's original high-concept storyline for the time travel drama "Rome, Sweet Rome."
Inspired by a 2011 Reddit thread, the story asks what if a unit of U.S. Special Forces are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions. Joby Harold, Adam Kolbrenner, Gianni Nunnari and Tory Tunnell are attached to produce.
Finally, Randall Miller and Jody Savin are looking to develop a film about famed Colorado recording studio Caribou Records. Miller and Savin will write the script with Miller directing.

A pair of sci-fi projects to keep an eye on for all you fans of sci-fi projects out there, both courtesy of Warner Bros. Up first is the time-travel “Rome, Sweet Rome”, which Warner Bros. is currently developing based on an post that first appeared on the social sharing site Reddit. The studio grabbed the pitch back in 2011 from writer James Erwin based on the question: What if a unit of U.S. Marines are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions? Well apparently Warner Bros. didn’t like the answer, because they’ve now set aside Erwin’s script and has hired screenwriter Brian Miller (“Apollo 18″) to take a crack at a new script … without ever having read Erwin’s script. Which, uh, must have meant the studio really, really didn’t like Erwin’s answer to the question that sold the movie.

Warner Bros. is moving ahead with plans for a time travel tale inspired by a 2011 Reddit thread. Variety brings word that Apollo 18 screenwriter Brian Miller will rewrite the original concept by James Erwin. His high concept plot simply asked, "What if a unit of U.S. Marines are transported back in time and forced to do battle with Roman legions?" The trade notes that some changes to Erwin's original concept have already occurred and that the film's band of military heroes will now be comprised of a Special Forces team rather than Marines specifically. Joby Harold, Adam Kolbrenner, Gianni Nunnari and Tory Tunnell are attached to produce with Robyn Meisinger executive producing.

Ryan Murphy – the man behind TV’s Glee and American Horror Story – is returning to horror with plans to pen a new sci-fi project that is being set up at Sony Pictures, to be co-written by Brian Miller.
For those of you who sat through 2010′s Eat, Pray, Love, you know just how horrifying a Murphy chiller can be. With Miller having written last year’s found footage shocker Apollo 18, the untitled project – for which details are firmly under wraps – will follow Murphy’s next scheduled release, an adaptation of Larry Kramer’s AIDS centric play, The Normal Heart.
Should anyone still have reservations for the film’s potential, the news that it is to be co-produced by Drive’s John Palermo (alongside Murphy) goes some way to readdressing the project’s cool quotient.
Variety had this one first.

Okay, here's an odd pairing. On one side we have the man who helped make glee clubs once again a part of our pop culture while ushering in the antichrist, and on the other is the dude responsible for penning a flick built entirely around a plot hole.
According to Variety Apollo 18 scribe Brian Miller and Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of "American Horror Story" and "Glee," are set to pen an untitled sci-fi/horror movie for Sony Pictures. Murphy will produce with John Palermo (Drive), and story details remain under wraps.
Talk about an unlikely and strange pairing. You know? This may just work. We'll keep an eye on things for ya. Keep it locked right here for more as it comes.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has joined forces with Apollo 18 scribe Brian Miller on a feature film. Variety (via The Film Stage) reports that the duo will write a sci-fi horror feature for Sony. The project will be produced by Murphy and Drive producer John Palermo. At this time there are very few details about the project, but we will keep you updated as news becomes available.
Even though Murphy is responsible for Glee and Apollo 18 did not fare well, I have hope for this project. I was a fan of Murphy since he did Nip/Tuck, and I love American Horror Story. Let's hope that this will be a good movie that horror fans can enjoy! What are your thoughts?

I never thought that a 24-hour period would bring two headlines bearing the name of TV mainstay Ryan Murphy, but that’s just the kind of week it is. As Variety informs us, the co-creator of Glee and American Horror Story will — along with Apollo 18 scribe Brian Miller — write a sci-fi horror feature for Sony. Along with making contributions to the page, Murphy and Drive producer John Palermo will be (what else?) producing for the studio; nothing regarding a potential director or cast has been mentioned.
So, what’s it about?
“[S]tory details remain under wraps.”
I think I just told the entire story in the headline, then. But if you want my opinion (no need to respond), allow me to say that when you combine the guy behind Apollo 18 and one of the men responsible for Glee, the results could be… problematic. You probably didn’t need me to tell you that,...

When in space, no one wants to hear you scream. That cannot be any truer with Apollo 18, a reasonably effective movie thriller that presents a what-if scenario of Nasa's "final" mission to the moon. Production-wise, the film reel effect is successful in conveying a dated product. And it also works in the favour of creating an engrossing product where, buried in the static and blips, there may be a terror in their midst.
Although watching the mission is a slow build, that’s done on purpose. A good portion of the footage audiences see is being transmitted back to mission control to record. But with radio transmissions not being instantaneous, can anyone imagine what waiting for a response from a communication from the Earth to the Moon and back must have been like?...

The United States' Apollo 11 first touched down upon the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969. Several other journeys followed, with the last being Apollo 17 in December of 1972. What isn't common knowledge is that there was one last top secret mission to the lunar surface - at least according to the quite fictional world of Apollo 18.
The premise of Apollo 18 is that the Us government fired off (at least) one more trip to the moon for a very secret mission. This mission was long covered up and denied; however, some 80 minutes of footage were purportedly uploaded to WikiLeaks inspired 'LunarTruth.com', a website dedicated to shining the truth on this secret mission.

Chicago – Space, the final frontier. The USA made one giant leap for mankind during the Apollo moon landing program forty years ago. Why were the missions abruptly terminated? Why haven’t they gone back? “Apollo 18” theorizes on the answers.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Set up and shot as if using top secret archival footage from the era, technical flaws and all, Apollo 18 becomes a secret mission after Apollo 17 (the last real mission), facilitated by the Department of Defense (and that ain’t gonna come out good). The film is eerie, for the colorless vacuum of the moon is a perfect setting for a few conspiracy theories to bloom.
It begins with the somber explanations of how Apollo 11 started it all, but one year later the decision to scrub the rest of the missions was made, and Apollo 17 was the last “official landing” on the moon in 1972. Apollo 18 is being launched as a secret mission,...

Nasa’s final mission to the moon was Apollo 17, or so the scientists would have us believe. Apparently, there was another mission to the moon which no one talks about, dubbed Apollo 18, and there’s a very good reason we haven’t been back to our nearest interstellar neighbor. Constructed from hours of leaked footage, Apollo 18 is the story of man’s Real last trip to the moon.
As part of a top-secret mission, a trio of astronauts named Anderson, Walker, and Grey are sent to the moon. Apparently, this is a world in which Nasa can shoot people into space and nobody will notice the giant flame-spewing rocket taking off from the Kennedy Space Center. Apollo 18...

After numerous delays, the "found-footage" sci-fi horror movie Apollo 18 (think "The Blair Witch Project on the moon") from producer Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) will open in theaters next week and Dimension Films has released a new preview clip to help promote its debut.
Written by Brian Miller and directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego, Apollo 18 takes place in December 1974 and centers around a mission to the moon that Nasa claims never took place. Nasa cancelled the program after Apollo 17, but the movie proposes that there was another mission, an 18th mission, and that the astronauts (played by Lloyd Owen and Warren Christie) who landed on the moon discovered that it was already occupied...by something deadly.

The film was originally going to open in March, then was quickly moved to April 22nd, then delayed until January 2012, moved back to August 26th, and, finally, landed on September 2nd. The second of this weeks international posters for new moon-based horror 'Apollo 18' has been revealed. This time its China's turn to give us a taste of what to expect from the Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego's flick. Personally I'm loving the new Chinese international one-sheet. It's sharp and effective and gives us a nice enveloping feel of isolation. Brian Miller and Cory Goodman penned the script together whilst filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov ('Wanted') produces. Check the new poster below and let us know what you think....

'Apollo 18' is the next in the line of faux-documentaries that are a relatively safe bet for film studios. With an estimated budget of about $5 million, there's really not much of a shot of it being a financial failure. Films like 'The Last Exorcism' hoping to be the next 'Paranormal Activity' don't always get what they want, but they turn a profit, however slight it may be. Whether this new film is going to become a phenomenon or yet another passer-by will become apparent during its release next month. For now, take a look at the new poster below. Here's the official synopsis: "Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon. But in December of 1974, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the Us Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual...

Sneak Peek a new teaser poster supporting the Dimension Films motion picture release "Apollo 18", opening September 2, 2011.
Produced by Timur Bekmambetov and Michael Wolkoff, "Apollo 18" is directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego from a screenplay by Brian Miller.
Lensed 'documentary style', the new sci fi film "...unearths lost footage from Apollo 18’s undocumented and covert mission to the moon, revealing disturbing new evidence of other life forms..."
The actual Us 'Apollo 18' moon mission was originally planned July 1969 to land in the moon's 'Schroter's Valley', but Nasa scrubbed the mission over what they said were 'congressional cuts' as opposed to 'alien interference'.

While some of the most spectacularly glitzy effects in Michael Bay's third Transformers take place on the moon--where the Apollo 13 mission is actually motivated by exploration of an abandoned Autobot space ship--we can assume that Dimension Films' similarly-themed Apollo 18, which hits theaters September 2, is taking the polar opposite approach: think low-tech Blair Witch/Cloverfield. Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego directs a script by Brian Miller. Check out the trailer and synopsis below. Here's more. Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon. Found footage horror Apollo 18 just got its second trailer and the mystery of what really* happened to the Apollo 18 lunar mission deepens accordingly
Gonzalo López directs a script from Brian Miller and the name on the poster you may know is that of filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov who jumped aboard with his Executive Producing hat.
The marketing so far has done a fair job of creating some unsettling images for the film (with the very first poster giving more away than we’ve seen since) and it’s an intriguing premise but this new trailer leaves me a little cold. If you’re flying me to the moon you’d better make it worth my while (nod to you Duncan Jones) and I hope that this is more than just Paranormal Activity in Space.
Yahoo threw this one out.
*not really.

The "found footage" sci-fi movie Apollo 18 quickly gained attention, especially after the release of the movie's first trailer, which shows "what really happened" on a 1973 space mission that Nasa claims never happened at all. The trailer was seen over 4.3 million times in its first six days, prompting studio head Bob Weinstein to try and continue its success by telling Entertainment Weekly that all the footage is "real."

Dimension's 'Apollo 18' has been bumped people! We were merely weeks from the opening of director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego's new 'found footage' sci-fi thriller but sadly Dimension have decided to move it back from it's originally slated 22 April 2011 release all the way to 6 January 2012! That's quite the bump I'm sure you will agree. The reason for it? Well, perhaps it has something to do with another Dimension release scheduled for the week before? 'Scream 4' is of course set to hit theatres on the 15 April and perhaps don't want to put all their horror eggs in one basket - I mean I'm certain 'Scream 4' is going to be hitting the top spot for a few weeks at least. Just why it needs to go all the way to January we're not sure. Brian Miller and Cory Goodman co-wrote the script and Timur Bekmambetov (currently working on 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter...

On Monday we heard about a couple sci-fi pitches that had been picked up by studios [1], with the general box office success of Battle: Lost Angeles probably not hurting that process. Now two more have been picked up. Fox grabbed a new story idea from Jurassic Park III writer Peter Buchman, and Paramount grabbed the new pitch from Brian Miller, who wrote [2] the low-budget 'found footage' sci-fi thriller Apollo 18. What little info we have on each is after the jump. Fox grabbed the pitch by Peter Buchman, of which THR [3] says "there could be a sci-fi element." John Moore, who directed Max Payne, The Omen remake and Behind Enemy Lines, is attached to direct. (He's also been attached to Final Orbit [4], Ice Road Truckers based on the History Channel reality TV series, and Kidnap, but all are either still in development or dead.) We don't know the scale of this film,...

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has acquired an untitled science fiction thriller pitch that will be written by Brian Miller. He's the scribe whose writing sample won a contest held by Timur Bekmambetov. That script turned into Apollo 18, the Dimension Films "found footage" pic that opens April 22. Brad Weston will produce the pic. The deal came about after a general meeting with Weston, where Miller pitched what I'm told is a big idea with a budget under $30 million. The studio called the next day and took it off the table. Miller is repped by CAA and 3 Arts.

Houston, we have a problem. Imp Awards published a Russian poster for the upcoming science-fiction thriller “Apollo 18.” The film’s plot revolves around a Russian “found footage” from the 1970s that implies Apollo 18 secretly discovered some life forms on the surface of the moon. Conspiracy theorists believed the mission did launch as planned despite the official cancellation orders by President Richard Nixon. It was speculated two American astronauts were sent to the moon in December 1973 and funded by the United States Department of Defense. Nasa has since denied these conspiracy theories and some conspiracy theorists claimed it was the reason on why the United States never had another mission to the moon. The film is based on the screenplay by Brian Miller, who was the winner of the inaugural Astana International Action Film Festival screenplay competition that was held in Astana, Kazakhstan last year. Miller was awarded a...
