Yann Mounir Demange quite literally blasted onto the scene back in 2014 with his feature debut about a stranded British soldier (Jack O’Connell) with nowhere to hide, but to move forward in a hostile Belfast circa 1971 (hence the provenance of the film’s title ’71). Born in Paris to a French mother and an Algerian father, the filmmaker would establish himself in the British film scene before Hollywood came knocking and yet we feel that it’s with his short, Dammi where we find the filmmaker at his most personal. Launched at 2023 Locarno Film Festival (with a trip to TIFF shortly after), this professional palette cleanser (before he sets off to make Blade) brings him back to his roots, and this is mostly due to a creative partnership formed with Rosa Attab (producer on Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here).…...

Of all the films that played at the recent Toronto Film Festival, a short called Dammi might have the biggest impact in unlocking a filmmaker to do his greatest work.
Yann Demange had his breakout on feature his debut on ’71, then made White Boy Rick, and when the strike ends he’ll revive for Marvel the Blade franchise with Mahershala Ali. Turns out it’s not a coincidence that he was drawn to those films about outsiders trying to find a place to belong. That is what Demange has addressed directly with Dammi, after years of feeling guilt and shame for being raised in foster homes and not getting the chance to embrace his roots as an Algerian and Muslim.
In Dammi, Demange directs his close friend Riz Ahmed in a role that is essentially the filmmaker, down to carrying his real name, Mounir. The haunted young man comes to...

Newly-minted Oscar-nominee and Emmy-winner Riz Ahmed has become just as well known for his activism as for his performances in projects like “Sound of Metal” or “The Night Of.”
Now the actor, musician and producer is taking his fight one step further, by launching a multi-layered initiative for Muslim representation in media, in partnership with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the Ford Foundation and Pillars Fund. Powered by USC Annenberg’s new study on Muslim representation in media — which found that less than 10% of top grossing films from 2017-2019 had a Muslim character on screen, with less than 2% of those characters having speaking roles — the coalition has created the Blueprint for Muslim Inclusion, as well as the Pillars Artists Fellowship, offering selected grantees an unrestricted award of $25,000.

Finnish poet-turned-filmmaker Mikko Myllylahti’s feature debut, “The Woodcutter Story,” won Cannes’ Critics’ Week inaugural Next Step award, part of a program aimed at helping the directors of the 10 shorts playing in the sidebar to make their feature debut.
“The Woodcutter Story,” which is being developed by the production banner Aamu Film Company, unfolds in Finland’s Lapland, in a quiet village where a dark force enters and sparks a series of tragic events. The tragedies start dragging down the morale of all but one villager, the local woodcutter whose unflinching optimism becomes suspicious.
Myllylahti said the movie mixed black comedy, surrealism and metaphorical thriller elements. He said the movie would also carry an environmental theme and would be about hope. The filmmaker, who has had four collections of poems published, said the tone of “The Woodcutter Story” was inspired by the Coen brothers’ “No Country for Old Men” and the work of Robert Bresson.

In the wee hours of the night (or early in the morning if you live across the pond), the nominations for the 72nd annual BAFTA Awards were announced. The British Academy, which chimes in each year before Oscar makes its announcement, put forth their nominees while Academy members now have their ballots in hand. As such, this is worth paying attention to. They split things up fairly evenly today, backing one movie in particular, but given plenty of others over a half dozen citations. Still, there were major snubs, which we’ll get to below. BAFTA certainly didn’t follow previously blazed trail this awards season, that’s for sure. Leading the way by a healthy margin was Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, which racked up an even dozen nominations, well ahead of any other film. Next in line was the quartet of Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Damien Chazelle’s First Man,...

The awards shows will continue until morale improves. That’s good news for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” which got off to a great start by winning both Best Actress for Olivia Colman and a Special Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and now leads all movies with 13 nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. Following it are “American Animals” (11), “Beast” (10), and “You Were Never Really Here” (8); all are nominated for the top prize, as is “Disobedience.”
Also well represented is Rachel Weisz, whose roles in “Disobedience” and “The Favourite” have her up for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively; her co-stars in both films — Olivia Colman and Emma Stone in “The Favourite,” Rachel McAdams in “Disobedience” — are all nominated as well.
This year’s Bifa ceremony takes place on Sunday, December 2 in London. Here’s the full list of nominees:

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Venice Special Grand Jury Prize winner The Favourite leads nominations for this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 13 in its court. The twisted take on the British monarchy and period cinema, which Fox Searchlight releases November 23 in North America, has nods for Venice Best Actress laureate Olivia Colman as well as for Best Film, Director, Screenplay and for its supporting cast Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. The latter is also up for Best Actress in Oscar winner Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience, which likewise scored a Best Film nom and put Rachel McAdams in the Supporting Actress category.
Following The Favourite is Bart Layton’s heist pic American Animals with 11 nominations, Michael Pearce’s Beast with 10 and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here scooping eight. Each is also competing in the Best British Independent Film race.
Bifa noted today that the nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated in Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer.
Ramsay notably continues her long association with Bifa, scoring her third nomination for Best Screenplay and her second for Best Director. With her You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix scores his second Bifa Best Actor nomination for his role as a tortured hitman in the psychological noir thriller.
Joe Cole (A Prayer Before Dawn), Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince), Charlie Plummer (Lean On Pete) and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) round out Best Actor. The Best Actress category also features Gemma Arterton (The Escape), Maxine Peake (Funny Cow) and Jessie Buckley (Beast).
The Bifa ceremony will be held on Sunday December 2 at London’s Old Billingsgate. Below is the full list of nominations.

The busy platform – in Cannes with five films in the festival – has paid approximately $3.5m for North American rights to Lynne Ramsay’s upcoming thriller.
Joaquin Phoenix will play a damaged war veteran, now a freelance rescuer of women trafficked into the sex trade.
When the extraction of a girl from a Manhattan brothel goes wrong, a storm of violence and corrupt power is unleashed against him, stirring a vengeance that may be his awakening.
Ramsay will direct You Were Never Really Here from her adapted screenplay of a novella by Jonathan Ames, who created the HBO show Bored To Death.
Insiders introduced the project to Croisette buyers last week and represents international rights excluding the UK and France, which Why Not Productions handles.
The UK’s Film4 and British Film Institute supported development of the project. Pascal Caucheteux, Rosa Attab and James Wilson are producing for Why Not Productions with Page 114 on board as co-producer.
