Ramsay’s brilliant rendering of a child’s experience during the 1975 Glasgow bin-collectors’ strike, spiked with a horrifying twist of fate, remains masterly
Twenty-five years ago, we saw one of the most impressive debut features in modern British movie history. Ratcatcher, by the 29-year-old Glasgow film-maker Lynne Ramsay, was a visually haunting, passionate piece of work to compare with Terence Davies or Ken Loach and which set a gold standard of artistry for new social realist cinema – or cinema of any sort – in the UK. I remember how blown away I was when I saw it at the Edinburgh film festival, especially by the rippling, sunlit fields at which a troubled child gazes, framed by the doorway of the half-built council house development outside Glasgow. (Only now does it occur to me to wonder if Ramsay was influenced by John Ford.)

Gen-z Media (www.GZMShows.com), the audio network responsible for many of the biggest hit shows for tweens, teens and families, announces its newest heartfelt adventure, Winnie Taylor’s 4th & Inches, an underdog story through the eyes of a teenage girl as she reconnects with her estranged father, a once-prominent quarterback making one last run at glory.
“Winnie Taylor’s 4th & Inches,” an 8-episode serialized podcast, launches on Monday, January 1 for Gzm Family Paid Subscribers, and across all podcast platforms from Monday, January 8. The series releases weekly through the end of February.
A touching and powerful exploration of fatherhood, “Winnie Taylor’s 4th & Inches” is written by Emmy-winner, Allie Dvorin and directed by Ryan Quinn. After her mother’s passing, 13-year old Winnie moves back to Cleveland, Ohio to live with her Dad, a retired NFL quarterback selling house siding, who wants nothing to do with football after an injury-filled career filled with disappointment.

Mercy, directed by Tony Dean Smith and written by Alex Right, revolves around the life of Afghan war veteran Dr. Michelle Miller, who comes face-to-face with the dreaded Quinn gang while treating Ryan Quinn, the younger brother of the gang’s livewire Sean Quinn. Mercy is a total genre flick, reveling in the cool moments expected from a slick action thriller. The characters are set up pretty quickly without dabbling in too much exposition. The plot can remind one of Die Hard, revamped with a female action heroine. Dr. Michelle Miller, played by Leah Gibson, is a conscientious Afghan war veteran who takes on the Quinn gang after they come looking for Ryan, not knowing who they are up against. On the other side is Sean Quinn, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who has his own issues with his family, which he hopes to sort out by taking out his brother Ryan.

Die Hard came out thirty-five years ago and we’re still seeing a steady stream of knock-offs rip-offs and cash-ins arriving. Case in point, Mercy, which like last year’s Assault on Va-33 puts a hospital under siege. Can the filmmakers deliver an entertaining action film, or is this, like so many other similar films, Doa?
While serving in Afghanistan Dr. Michelle Miller had her husband turn up as a patient in her field hospital, worse he had a bomb strapped to him. This leads to an agonized, and agonizing, exchange of dialogue “Get out Michelle, somebody’s got to be there for Bobby!” “No, I’m not leaving you!” followed by Frank rolling off the table so his detonation somehow doesn’t kill her.
