Exclusive: When Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn oversaw the then-titled HBO Max’s unscripted pipeline, the pair worked with Issa Rae and her production company Hoorae on series including Sweet Life: Los Angeles, which ran for two seasons and the reboot of Project Greenlight.
The trio are now getting the band back together after Rae’s Hoorae has struck a production partnership with O’Connell & Quinn’s Velvet Hammer Media.
The deal will see the two companies co-develop a range of unscripted series across genres including dating, social experiments and competition.
Velvet Hammer Media, which was founded last year, is behind series including The Big Bakeover for The CW and Empty Nest Refresh for Roku. Velvet Hammer Media, the non-scripted production company founded by Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn, has received a minority investment from global sports and entertainment company Endeavor.
William Morris Endeavor, talent agency within Endeavor, represents athletes from sports organizations like the NHL and NFL. Endeavor currently owns UFC and Pbr (Professional Bull Riders).
Vhm just recently secured series such as “The Big Bakeover” and Roku’s “Empty Nest Refresh” along with other unannounced development deals with Netflix, NBCU and other platforms. Together, O’Connell and Quinn serve as EPs on all Vhm projects. The pair founded Vhm earlier this year after departing their roles at Max (formerly HBO Max).

Endeavor is making another move in the unscripted content space, investing in Velvet Hammer Media, founded by producers Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn.
Velvet Hammer launched earlier this year, and has already secured greenlights for shows like The Big Bakeover for The CW and Roku Channel’s Empty Nest Refresh. The company also has projects in development at Netflix and NBCUniversal, among other companies.
Terms of the investment were not disclosed.
Unscripted fare has long been a staple of TV networks and streaming services, but the ongoing writers strike has made the space even more appealing, with production on the programs able to continue even as everything else gets shut down.
O’Connell and Quinn are industry veterans, with O’Connell most recently executive VP of nonfiction and live action family originals at HBO Max (including shows like FBoy Island and Selena + Chef), while Quinn was senior VP of nonfiction at HBO Max.

When “Summer of Soul” sold for $15 million out of the 2021 pandemic-virtual Sundance Film Festival, we saw the peak of the documentary boom. Questlove’s feature debut was a Sundance record, but it wasn’t alone; other Sundance docs like “Fire of Love” and “Flee” sold for high-seven figures.
Today, Sundance 2023 premiere “It’s Only Life After All,” which included its subjects the Indigo Girls performing at the festival’s Opening Night fundraiser, has yet to find a buyer. Ditto “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” “The Disappearance of Shere Hite,” or Doug Liman’s Brett Kavanaugh doc “Justice.”
Sundance also had documentaries that came with distribution, like Hulu’s “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” Amazon’s “Judy Blume Forever,” and Apple’s “Still: A Michael J. Every media personality from the ’90s needs a streaming documentary, and Miss Cleo has conjured up her own. The first trailer for “Call Me Miss Cleo,” an HBO Max original documentary, was released on Thursday.
Born Youree Dell Harris, Miss Cleo was the main spokesperson for Psychic Readers Network, a pay-per-call service for people seeking the advice of psychics. Through television infomercials, Harris built up a cult following from 1997 to 2003 across the United States, before the company was charged by the Federal Trade Commission with deceptive advertising, billing, and collection practices. Harris left Psychic Readers Network and continued to play the character of Cleo intermittently in advertisements for used car dealerships and French Toast Crunch cereal, before developing colorectal cancer and passing away in 2016.
The new documentary features interviews with the people closest to Harris, as well as prominent celebrities during her heyday like Raven-Symoné and Debra Wilson, exploring her shadowy and convoluted real-life story.

Exclusive: About 70 people, or 14 of the programming operation overseen by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys, were laid off last week as part of cost-cutting across Warner Bros. Discovery. At the time, only the departures of the heads of departments that were worst hit — all of them on the HBO Max side — were made public, including Jennifer O’Connell EVP, Non-Fiction & Live-Action Family Originals. Now names of other executives who are leaving as part of the restructuring and staff reductions are starting to trickle out.
One of them is respected kids development exec Nikki Reed who was VP Kids and Family Scripted Originals. She was part of O’Connell’s team that has been disbanded as HBO Max pulled back dramatically on kids programming and live-action family originals.
Reed joined HBO Max in 2019, ahead of HBO’s 2020 launch, to lead original scripted programming in the kids and family space.

As expected, layoffs have hit Casey Bloys’ HBO Max and HBO teams.
An estimated 14 percent of Bloys’ teams — an estimated 70 people — have been let go as part of the workforce reduction following the merger of WarnerMedia with Discovery. The moves are the latest step in cost-cutting for the combined Warner Bros. Discovery under CEO David Zaslav.
As part of the layoffs, Sarah Aubrey will continue to oversee the HBO Max originals drama slate and add international programming alongside the Wbd international division led by Gerhard Zeiler. HBO Max comedy, however, will now fall under the oversight of HBO head of comedy Amy Gravitt with Max’s Suzanna Makkos reporting directly to the former. Gravitt, a well-regarded HBO veteran with a strong track record, will now oversee the combined comedy department. Joey Chavez, exec vp programming, will continue to report to Aubrey as a lead for Max dramas.

However, as high-profile these areas are, they also are additive to Discovery’s business, which is only peripherally involved in scripted TV via the company’s venture with Oprah Winfrey OWN. Meanwhile, it is unscripted television where the two merging companies have the biggest overlap and where combining the assets will require consolidation.

HBO Max has renewed new dating competition series “FBoy Island” for a second season.
The show comes from creator Elan Gale and is hosted by Nikki Glaser, who also executive produces.
“With a title like ‘FBoy Island,’ we knew we would get the audience’s attention and we’re thrilled that they’ve responded to the self-aware, comedic nature of the format, proving that they are excited by this fresh approach that puts women in control,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max.

The trick, at first, seemed to be to figure out who were the self-proclaimed “nice guys” who were there to form genuine relationships and who were the self-professed “f-boys,” who...

A show that makes you fall asleep? That’s the counterintuitive pitch that Jennifer O’Connell, EVP of non-fiction and live-action family at HBO Max, received from Nutopia — the production company that brought you “Mankind The Story of All of Us” — and Calm, the meditation and mindfulness app.
“We sat down, they played a sizzle reel, they dimmed the lights,” O’Connell recalled. “By the end of the sizzle reel, our shoulders lowered, our breath was calmer — we could feel ourselves feeling good.”
The pitch became “A World of Calm,” a 10-episode HBO Max series featuring zen stories gently narrated by the likes of Keanu Reeves and Nicole Kidman, accompanied by relaxing sounds and images. It’s part of a growing segment that turns entertainment into “mindfulness content.” Rather than make something that excites, stimulates, and thrills, its goal is to make viewers to chill out, take a breath, or even fall sleep.
