Marco Pierre White's looking straight at me with piercing eyes. The reaction from my friends and family when I revealed I was going to be cooking for the volatile chef was unanimous: "He's terrifying."
Now that I'm in front of him, all I can think of are two things: 1. Don't burn the studio down, and 2. Don't slice your finger off.
In all my years I have never burnt a building down or sliced a finger off. So quite why I'm now panicking is unclear. But White, who TV viewers will remember as the demonic head honcho on ITV's Hell's Kitchen, has that effect.
The first British chef to gain three Michelin stars, the culinary success story trained under Albert and Michel Roux and later mentored Gordon Ramsay. The pair fell out when Ramsay turned up to his wedding with a camera crew in tow, and haven't spoken since.

Marcus Wareing has signed up to become a new judge on MasterChef: The Professionals.
The culinary expert - who has two Michelin stars, winning his first at the age of 25 - will join Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace on the panel when the show returns later this year.
He takes over from Michel Roux Jr, who was forced to quit the series because of a "conflict in commercial interests" and later complained that "negotiating with the BBC can be a frustrating process".
Wareing, who began his career at The Savoy when he was 18, already runs two restaurants in London and will open his third - Tredwell's - in September.
"I have been watching MasterChef since I was a young kid at catering college, and in more recent years I have enjoyed an established relationship with the programme," Wareing said.

Ooh, there's nothing quite like Saturday morning television to ease you into the weekend, is there? Well, Steve Jones and Lisa Snowdon are hoping that they'll be the ones helping you out of your hangovers and accompanying your eggs and soldiers with their new show Weekend Kitchen with Waitrose. We got them on the phone to have a good old natter about what makes Saturday morning telly...
Do... make sure your show is about more than just cooking
Steve: "Although it's called Weekend Kitchen, it's not a show about cooking. I think the idea behind the title is that the kitchen is the heart of the home - it's where most of the fun things happen in a household, and that's kind of what we're going for. It's not all in the kitchen - it's basically a living room with a kitchen attached. We're interviewing celebrities on set, we're in the kitchen,...

MasterChef: The Professionals judge Michel Roux Jr has said that British cooking shows are not as fancy as their French counterparts.
The chef explained that The Great British Bake Off and its French version are the same format, "but the tests are a little bit more fancy – put it that way".
He also discussed France's MasterChef, where the contestants are challenged to taste raw animal innards and identify the creature they come from.
Of whether the British MasterChef could follow suit, Roux revealed that he and fellow judge Monica Galetti had been trying to persuade producers.
"To be brutally honest, I do hope one day we get to that stage," he told the Radio Times.
"We will get there. Personally, I don't find that shocking and I strongly believe that the British viewer is ready – that the British viewer would be quite happy to watch that and would be fascinated.

Jamie MacKinnon has been crowned the winner of BBC Two's The Chef's Protégé.
The 17-year-old catering student from Perth College, Scotland beat fellow hopefuls Sophie and David to take the title of Britain's most promising young chef.
Throughout the series MacKinnon was mentored by Michelin starred chef Tom Kitchin, who hand-picked the teenager after returning to catering college and conducting a search for the most talented trainees.
The pair competed against protégés selected by fellow top chefs Theo Randall and Le Gavroche's Michel Roux Jr in cooking challenges designed to test the candidates' skills.
Tonight's final cook-off saw the students produce a two-course menu for judges Pierre Koffmann, Ruth Rodgers and Albert Roux.
MacKinnon impressed the panel with his Scottish scallop and roast partridge menu that was deemed both high quality and a clear demonstration of his mentor's influences.
Following his victory, MacKinnon described the final as the best day of his life.

Michael Winner, who has died aged 77, will be missed terribly by the restaurant world, says Jay Rayner
Michael Winner was not as other restaurant critics. The fact was, he didn't really give a toss about the food, as long as it wasn't too demanding or showy. For him it was about the room and the service. Most of all it was about Michael Winner, and whether he was having an utterly terrific time. He was Mr Toad of The Wind in The Willows made flesh. And how could you not like Mr Toad?
Over the years people would rage about his column in the Sunday Times. What, they asked, did the man know about gastronomy? Not much, to be fair. But that's to misunderstand the job. Restaurant critics aren't there to sell restaurants. They are there to sell newspapers, and he did that very well indeed, mostly by giving people...

The two judges, Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr and celebrity grocer Gregg Wallace, were unable to choose between Keri Moss and Anton Piotrowski. Roux Jr said: "This has probably been one of the hardest, tightest finals that I have ever seen. "It was just impossible to split them - their talents have been matched plate for plate for the past several challenges and it was truly impossible to award one the title over the other." Wallace added: "What an amazing final, I can't ever remember a decision this tight."

Wassup, rockers. It's been a poor week for television, and I only have dregs of exisiting programmes to offer you. Is this Recession Britain, at long last? Has everything decent totally disappeared? Where is the effervescent cauldron of creativity that once was? Is the whole country just sitting back, watching DVDs of "The Killing" and waiting for "Doctor Who"'s sexy return? Anyway, here are the remains of the day. Enjoy!
Masterchef
Upon first viewing, I originally dismissed this new season of "Masterchef" -- the show that promises to find the best amateur cook in Britain, even though surely the best amateur cook in Britain wouldn't have waited so many seasons to reveal himself or herself . The early elimination rounds had been souped up into really overheated drama and were somehow not as compelling as they had used to be in past seasons, which often found hapless wannabes cooking inedible...

Only four exceptional amateur cooks remain in the culinary battle to become this year’s MasterChef. Judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace ask the amateurs to overcome their greatest weakness – pastry – and set them three daunting challenges.
First off it’s a masterclass with the king of patisserie, Michel Roux, in the art of making one of the most challenging cakes of all time: the croquembouche, a perfect tower of choux pastry buns filled with crème patissiere and bound with spun sugar. Following the lesson, the four have just three hours to rise to the challenge and make their first ever croquembouche for Michel Roux to taste. Tension runs high in the MasterChef kitchen as the amateurs struggle with their choux, delicately build them up, and then, with bated breath, remove their mould to see the towers of their labour. Will they stand tall or fall flat for the maestro?...

Annie Assheton became the latest contestant to be eliminated from MasterChef tonight. The mother and part-time administrator failed to make it into the top five after cooking for 150 students at New College, Oxford. Speaking to Digital Spy, Assheton admitted that the dish she made for guest judge Michel Roux Jr. was "a bit of a disaster" but revealed that she was "devastated" that she had to leave the competition. "I just regret that hour and a half so much," she said. "I've recooked those (more)...

Masterchef star Michel Roux Jr has hit out at Simon Cowell and his reality TV show The X Factor, saying that her hates that genre of entertainment.
Saying that the 51 year old star is setting a ‘despicable’ example, Roux admitted that he hates the fact Cowell and his cronies would rather bring people down than try to help them achieve their dreams.
He told The Sun:
“It’s easy to make shows where you scream, shout, vote people off and humiliate them. Simon Cowell and X Factor and in all of those shows there is voting off and ridiculing.
“That’s not for me. The example they’re setting is despicable.”
Michel then turned his attention to celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White, who feel that they need to yell and swear in a kitchen to be heard. He added:

Gregg Wallace and John Torode have admitted that they love all the MasterChef YouTube spoofs. The BBC One show's judges admitted that they had watched the online videos, which included a 'Top 10 MasterChef Innuendos' and a comedy reworking of the Professionals series. "I think it's just brilliant," said Torode. "The one where Michel Roux says, 'the presentation of that is stunning', and then the camera pans down to an ice cream with a cone for a hat and little Smartie eyes, is genius. "And then to top it off Gregg says, 'That is a thing of beauty'. It is just brilliant. The thing about these spoofs is the time they must have spent doing them is incredible. It is just absolutely fantastic. I think it is done with affection." (more)...

Masterchef: The Professionals
The concept of "Masterchef" is as follows: the only people left in the country who don't want to achieve fame via Simon Cowell-approved "talent" contests, attempt to achieve fame and glory by becoming Britain's "masterchef." The amateurs audition by cooking some sort of dumb dish out of a selection of ingredients (usually scallops on a bed of pea puree) for the judges, then cooking in a professional restaurant and then making more dishes for panels of experts etcetera etcetera etcetera until there are only a few people left in the competition and finally one of them makes a monk-fish tartare with pancetta tuiles and salsifi quenelles on a bed of chilli-infused bouillabaisse that is so divine that he or she wins it. It's one of the best programmes on television. Suck it, "Mad Men."
What makes "Masterchef" so hilariously addictive are the judges: John Torode, a kind of surly,...

Gregg Wallace and Michel Roux Jr have crowned the new winner of MasterChef: The Professionals. 30-year-old Claira Lara took home the title last night, beating David Coulson and John Calton at the final hurdle. Lara found out she was pregnant after taking part in the show and credited some of her success to her heightened sense of smell. The Merseyside chef told Pa: "I think being pregnant gave me an advantage. It heightened my sense of smell and taste. I felt so sick and was vomiting each day but I put it down to stress on the show as David was feeling the same. But obviously, he wasn't pregnant!" Speaking about being the first female winner, she said: "It feels brilliant, but at the time I didn't know I was the (more)...

Londoner Steve Groves has triumphed in BBC Two cookery series MasterChef: The Professionals. Groves beat Marianne Lumb and Daniel Graham in last night's final. In their last challenge, all three chefs had to cook a three course meal for judges Michel Roux Jr and Greg Wallace. The 28-year-old's winning menu included a starter of roast quail with scotch egg, morels and asparagus and a main of venison loin with potato rosti, watercress puree and roasted beetroot.
