Hallmark Channel is capping off a month of original films themed around Jane Austen’s works with the premiere of a new feature-length adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The classic story about whether young women should choose husbands based on romantic notions of love or practicality has been adapted for both television and film several times before. Many fans may remember either the 1995 film adaptation directed by Ang Lee or the 2008 BBC and PBS television miniseries starring Dominic Cooper and Charity Wakefield.
This Sense and Sensibility stands out from the other recent period adaptations of Austen’s works, however, as it’s produced by Hallmark’s Mahogany brand, which is devoted to producing original films and series with Black screenwriters, actors, directors, and other creatives. Unlike Netflix’s 2022 Persuasion adaptation, which used the controversial strategy of “color-blind casting,” Hallmark’s Sense and Sensibility deliberately sought out Black actors for principal and supporting roles.

‘Paging Mr. Darcy’
Professor Eloise Cavendish (Mallory Jansen) is a Jane Austen scholar invited to give a talk at an annual conference about the famous author. But the event combines serious scholarship with fandom, and Eloise isn’t sure how her work – which focuses on the role of money, not love in Austen’s novels – will be received. Nor is she impressed when she meets Sam (Will Kemp), the event’s official Mr. Darcy. But Eloise and Sam soon discover that they have more in common than they first thought.

As much as "Star Trek" prides itself on taking a forward-looking approach to sci-fi, even this storied franchise isn't immune to bursts of nostalgia every now and then. There's a reason why the J.J. Abrams movies, after all, brought back Leonard Nimoy as Spock despite going out of their way to reboot the timeline. Much of "Star Trek: Picard" (and practically the entirety of its third and final season) felt like a grand reunion special, catered specifically to the long-suffering fans who never quite got a satisfying sense of closure from the movies centered on the cast of "The Next Generation." And now, even a spin-off/prequel like "Strange New Worlds" has found itself introducing more and more of the famed crew of the USS Enterprise -- most recently in the season 2 finale, with Martin Quinn's portrayal of the engineer Montgomery Scott.

Spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" follow.
It's been over a week since season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" wrapped. I'd call the season a success; it built upon the rock-solid first season and swung further toward the fences. "Strange New Worlds" season 2 was daring, goofy, and pushed "Star Trek" into new frontiers while capping off with a bold cliffhanger right out of "The Next Generation."
While the premiere is at least a year away, it was confirmed back in March 2023 that "Strange New Worlds" has been renewed for a third season. The cast has already floated some ideas; Rebecca Romijn (Commander Una-Chin Riley/Number One) wants an episode showing how her character met Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), for example. But it's not just the show's cast and crew with hopes and dreams for season 3.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 finale “Hegemony.”] The good news: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for a third season. The frustrating news: No matter what the wait is for it, it’s going to seem like too long after the Season 2 finale cliffhanger. When Batel’s (Melanie Scrofano) crew — which includes Chapel (Jess Bush), on her way to her fellowship — runs into some serious trouble (the Gorn!), Pike (Anson Mount) and the Enterprise rush to their rescue. Along the way, they meet a certain Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn), Spock (Ethan Peck) and Chapel save each other, Batel is infected, and La’an (Christina Chong), M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Ortegas (Melissa Navia), and Sam (Dan Jeannotte), along with others, are taken by the Gorn … and that’s how the finale ends. Below, executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers break down the Season 2 finale. Why...

This post contains major spoilers for the season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
As I watched the season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," titled "Hegemony," it took until the closing five minutes for me to ask: "How are they going to resolve this?" The Enterprise is locked in combat with a fleet of Gorn ships. Those reptilian predators have abducted key members of the crew. Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano) is on borrowed time before a Gorn chestburster kills her while Captain Pike (Anson Mount) can't decide whether to push on and save his people or obey Starfleet and retreat.
Half a minute before the credits rolled, the answer hit me — the resolution isn't coming, at least not yet. Sure enough, the episode ends with a title card "To Be Continued..." Those are words once synonymous with TV, but streaming has put them out of fashion.

As Strange New Worlds inches closer and closer to the timeframe of Star Trek: The Original Series, the amount of references to that iconic show are naturally increasing, almost exponentially. Although we’re still firmly in 2259, the world of 2265 – and Kirk’s Enterprise – seem right around the corner. In the Uhura-centric adventure, “Lost in Translation,” Paul Wesley returns as James T. Kirk, this time finally from the Prime Universe. In addition to having a standalone adventure with Uhura, the return of Kirk to Strange New Worlds also brings a lot of Trekkie loose ends closer together.
Here are all the big canon references and Easter eggs we caught in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, “Lost in Translation.”

What is sweeter than chocolate? Love! And Dan Jeannotte.
Jeannotte stars with Eloise Mumford in Hallmark Channel's Valentine's Day movie, Sweeter than Chocolate, which mixes the title ingredient, love, and some other unexpected delights into a perfect celebration of the holiday.
We had the chance to chat with Jeannotte about the movie and to get his take on Valentine's Day's celebration of love.
The logline reads: A local bakery is rumored to have the secret recipe to finding true love on February 14th, drawing in a TV reporter to investigate. Sounds delicious, right?
Mumford is the chocolatier, and Jeannotte is the reporter sent to investigate. Will a chocolatier's signature chocolate bring them together as it's done with many others?
You have had many series roles over the last decade, including Reign and Good Witch, Bold Type, and Star Trek, but you always find time for Hallmark movies. What attracts you to these romantic movies?...

Paul Wesley knew instantly that everything was going to work out. The universe was clearly telling him it was his time to play Capt. James T. Kirk — after all, who better than William Shatner to give his blessing?
It was announced earlier in the year that the Vampire Diaries star had been tapped to play Captain Kirk for season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. But fans were in for a shock when Wesley made his debut as the iconic sci-fi character in the season one finale of the Paramount+ series this week in “A Quality of Mercy,” which is a brilliant mirror of the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Balance of Terror.”

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series premiere.] Going into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we knew that James T. Kirk will be appearing in Season 2, played by Paul Wesley. But early on in the series premiere, there’s talk of a Lieutenant Kirk. After Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) boards the Enterprise — reluctantly, though Una (Rebecca Romijn) has gotten into trouble while the starship was in space dock — Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) comments that Lieutenant Kirk and the chief engineer are among those officers who have to join them after the mission since a personal rotation was in progress. We also learn that Pike requested Kirk. It’s after Pike returns to the bridge at the end of the episode, having decided that he will be staying on and not returning to his cabin (and beard) that Kirk makes his debut — Samuel Kirk (Dan Jeannotte), James’ brother, that is.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the series finale of “The Bold Type,” which aired June 30 on Freeform.
Endings are hard. The penultimate season of “The Bold Type” — cut short by the pandemic — left Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) and Richard Hunter (Sam Page) in a difficult spot, disagreeing fundamentally on whether each wanted children following Sutton’s miscarriage. The final season appeared to be continuing down that path, with divorce on the table. But in the end, the fans got what they wanted.
“Yes, I always wanted kids,” Richard tells Sutton. “But I want you more.”
That conclusion almost didn’t happen, though.
“What ended up happening with Sutton’s storyline at the end — they rewrote it the night before we shot it,” Fahy told Variety in a Zoom interview alongside co-stars Katie Stevens and Aisha Dee, who play Jane Sloan and Kat Edison, respectively.

Before you know it, Hallmark will be knee-deep in Christmas.
But before you put on you jolly cap and decorate the tree, we still have some other celebrating to do.
Good Witch: Curse From a Rose airs Saturday, October 19 at 8/7c.
The Good Witch got its start with Halloween, and Middleton is going all out for the holiday. But someone visits Middleton with the hopes of turning their festivities upside down.
That someone is the aptly named Autumn Delaney, Cassie’s long-lost college roommate. From Cassie’s perspective, all is well, but unbeknownst to her (or is it?), Autumn harbors some ill will toward her old friend.
The Good Witch Season Finale Review: The Graduation
Bringing Autumn to life is film and television actress Lolita Davidovich, and she beautifully portrays someone who has lost their grounding force.
Have no doubt that Cassie will win over the heart of her friend...

If you're like me, you've been watching Good Witch since it's first movie premiered in 2008.
You probably know the characters like the back of your hand.
That's why I'm thrilled to share that Good Witch Season 6 is a go at Hallmark! There is some less-than-stellar news to report, also, though. Someone won't be returning when the sixth season begins.
Catherine Bell has starred as Cassie Nightingale since the series began, but Cassie's life looked a whole lot different when she first got to Middleton.
She was a mysterious newcomer with a surprising family connection to the town, and she was also single and ready to mingle!
Throughout the Good Witch movie franchise, we got to know Cassie and followed her life as she met and married Jake Russell, father of two to Brandon and Lori.
Cassie was a wonderful mother, so we were even more excited when she got pregnant and gave birth to Grace.

In a decidedly bad development for fans of Hallmark Channel’s Good Witch, Bailee Madison will not be returning for the series just-ordered sixth season. The actress’ character, Grace Russell, is poised to graduate at the end of the dramedy’s current fifth season, “allowing for a natural wrap of her storyline,” according to Deadline, which broke the news of Madison’s departure.
Good Witch stars Jag and Army Wives vet Catherine Bell as Cassie Nightingale, the newly widowed enchantress of the fictional town of Middleton. Madison co-stars as her now-teenage daughter who shares her mother’s unique gifts of insight and intuition.

Determined, independent and powerful women. That is what Freeform's new series The Bold Type is all about. But what's it like being the "eye candy," one of the men of The Bold Type? That's what I sought to learn in talking to Dan Jeannotte, who plays Ryan, "the Pinstripe guy," and Jane's love interest on the show. What did Jeannotte have to say about Jane and Ryan's relationship? Well, we'll be seeing more of Ryan and Jane will have to figure out exactly what she wants from "the Pinstripe guy." And most importantly, as he reminded me: "I know, and you know: it's her story, not his."...

In the third episode of Syfy’s Being Human, we learned lots of new rules about Aidan (Sam Witwer), Josh (Sam Huntington), and Sally (Meaghan Rath).
