Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on industry players outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week we’re talking to Heretic co-founder Giorgos Karnavas about the growth of his Athens-based production and sales house he started in 2013 with Konstantinos Kontovrakis. The company played a pivotal role in co-producing Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner and Oscar contender Triangle of Sadness, its first English-language production.
Giorgos Karnavas is a little jet-lagged, but it’s been for the worthiest of causes. When Deadline sits down with the Heretic co-founder, he has just arrived back in Athens after a whirlwind trip to L.A. where he attended the Oscars for the first time with his co-production Triangle of Sadness. The Palme d’Or-winning title was up for Best Picture as well as Best Director for Ruben Östlund and, while it came away empty-handed,...

Wish It Were Sunday: Papadimitropoulos Peddles Bad Romance in Ex-Pat Whirligig
Toxic relationships and fair-weather romances are abundantly attenuated in the cinematic realm, the various combinations of which tie into a tale as old as time—two lonely people who forge a relationship doomed to fail. Greek director Argyris Papadimitropoulos provides a sun dappled melodrama of prolonged frustration in his fourth feature, Monday, wherein two American ex-pats embark on a foolish, rosy-tinted, drug infused, sex fueled venture, and all for naught.
Curiously eliding dark comedy potential as well as avoiding the psychological infrastructure necessary to sustain any interest or understanding of this hetero romance, as pockmarked as an ancient Athenian ruin, only fans of its lead performers might argue its merits.…...

Photo: 'Monday'/IFC Films ‘Monday’ Synopsis Directed and written by Argyris Papadimitropoulos, ‘Monday’ follows two Americans, Mickey (Sebastian Stan) and Chloe (Denise Gough), living in Athens who find themselves entangled together in an unforgettable weekend of adventures. Mickey is your stereotypical boyish, shaggy brown hair, puppy-eyed charmer living his life with one foot in front of the other. On the other hand, Chloe is an immigration lawyer who’s a straight arrow that drinks too much but isn’t as carefree as the free-spirited Mickey. She has problems after having been in an abusive relationship and treats life’s moments as just events in one’s life that come and goes. The days of the week appear on film, making a chapter out of their small relationship that starts on a “Friday,” and when the word “Monday” appears well, the genuine feeling you get for the Monday blues comes barreling down on the pair.

Sebastian Stan is best known as his superhero persona, the Winter Soldier. Clad in a leather jacket and reinforced combat pants and boots, he’s ready for battle across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But in IFC’s April 16 release “Monday,” in which he plays a club DJ living in the hip Athens neighborhood of Kypseli, his bohemian-casual wardrobe made for a total contrast. Stan plays Mickey, an American living in Greece who meets Chloe, an American lawyer (Denise Gough) who’s coming out of a bad relationship, and the two get caught up in a passionate romance.
Greek costume designer Marli Aleiferi, who dressed Stan, hadn’t worked with many international stars until she collaborated on the film with director Argyris Papadimitropoulos. To bring Mickey to life, she went to thrift stores and built his wardrobe using secondhand clothes. She also pulled items from local Greek designers and distressed any new items.

Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough set off on a whirlwind weekend romance in Monday, a romantic drama that IFC Films released in theaters and on-demand Friday.
It’s the fourth feature from director Argyris Papadimitropoulos, who also wrote and produced the film.
Here is the plot: When Mickey (Stan) is dragged away from his DJ set by a drunken friend and introduced to Chloe (Gough) one hot summer night in Athens, the attraction between the pair is immediately palpable. So palpable that before they know it they’re waking up naked on the beach Saturday morning. And so it goes that a one-night stand on Friday turns into a whirlwind weekend romance that leads to serious conversations when they face the harsh sunlight on Monday morning.
The pic was an official selection at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. Check out the trailer below.

Denise Gough was “over” the idea of nudity and sex scenes for actresses on film, and in the indie romance “Monday” there are quite a lot of them. But Gough says she knew her co-star Sebastian Stan would be a trustworthy partner on screen.
One of Stan and Gough’s first moments is the two of them curled up asleep and naked on a public beach, leading to them eventually riding through the streets of Greece nude on a moped. But in speaking with TheWrap, both Stan and Gough said “Monday” director Argyris Papadimitropoulos earned their trust after seeing his film “Suntan” and knew that he wouldn’t “pull any punches.”
“It was feeling absolutely safe, and I wouldn’t have known how to trust Argyris if I hadn’t seen’ Suntan.’ I had to see proof that this body was going to be Ok with him. It’s a...

Chloe (Denise Gough) is an immigration lawyer coming out of a breakup. Mickey (Sebastian Stan) is a DJ who plays disco.
They're Americans in Greece, thrown together impulsively on a Friday night with a passionate kiss that leads to them naked on the beach by Saturday morning when a ride in the backseat of a squad car seems like a good enough time as any to introduce themselves.
Saturday is also the day Chloe intends on packing so she can get out of Greece for good. Mickey has other plans.
One romantic airport plea later, and Mickey and Chloe are moving forward at full speed.
If you've ever had a one-night stand, then you know that they typically last one night for a reason. Dancing, drinking, and pulse-pounding music ignites sexual energy that is easily satisfied with a mysterious and good-looking stranger. Then, in the light of day, things begin to look a lot different.

Don’t get too taken in by a first impression — that’s a lesson learned by the characters in “Monday,” but it’s valuable advice for the audience as well. What starts out as a sexy, sun-soaked romp becomes a heartbreaking examination of two people who are absolutely wrong for each other.
Not just any filmmaker can craft sex scenes that are both exhilarating in the moment and, in the aggregate, essential to building plot and character, but director Argyris Papadimitropoulos manages that delicate balance. The Greek locations (shot by Hristos Karamanis) are gorgeous, but what starts like a travelogue winds up more of a tragedy.
We first meet Chloe at a party, drunk and leaving screaming voicemails for the boyfriend who has stood her up. Host Argyris (Giorgos Pyrpasopoulos) introduces her to his friend Mickey (Sebastian Stan), the DJ, since they’re both American. Both attracted to him and emotionally fragile,...

That’s what Argyris Papadimitropoulos offers audiences in his latest film, “Monday.”

How does a romance go from “Before Sunset” to “Blue Valentine?” Argyris Papadimitropoulos charts the dissolution of a passionate fling into domestic resentment in “Monday,” a film that succeeds at capturing the peaks and valleys of a relationship but sputters out when capturing the mundane moments in between. Not unlike the on-screen pair, Mickey (Sebastian Stan) and Chloe (Denise Gough), Papadimitropoulos excels in exploring the couple’s carnal journey but can never quite hit a groove when it comes to finding stability in their cohabitation.

Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough have zero chemistry as a couple dealing with a series of uninteresting relationship crises in a disappointing drama
Four years ago, the Greek film-maker Argyris Papadimitropoulos made a vivid impression with Suntan: a bleakly hilarious Death-In-Venice-type affair set in a seaside resort, featuring a sad middle-aged man who tortures himself with his tragic infatuation with a beautiful young woman on holiday.
Here is his follow-up, in the English language, featuring Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes from Marvel’s Captain America movies) and the Irish stage star Denise Gough, with a script co-written by the director with the award-winning British dramatist Rob Hayes (who worked with Michaela Coel on the TV comedy Chewing Gum). Sadly, despite all the talent involved, this is a disappointment: an unconvincing, undeveloped and emotionally directionless non-drama that just goes pointlessly around and around in circles. All of this film’s various moods – erotic,...

Not long ago, it would have been difficult for Greek production outfit Heretic to board a project such as “Do Not Hesitate,” an ambitious, Afghanistan-set war drama that is partly being filmed on the island of Crete.
But for Giorgos Karnavas, who is producing “Hesitate” alongside the Netherlands’ Lemming Film, the calculus has changed since Greece introduced a 35% cash rebate last year. “The cash rebate gives us the [ability] to step into projects that we would not be able to otherwise, and is also a tool to attract new projects that appeal to us,” Karnavas says.
The rebate has given a fresh jolt to an industry still recovering from the country’s crippling economic crisis, with a wave of majority and minority co-productions in the cards from Greek producers. Nearly a decade into his turn as Marvel’s Bucky Barnes — otherwise known as The Winter Soldier — actor Sebastian Stan is busier than ever, but not with the kind of safe commercial bets that other franchise players might be pursuing. A year after taking on the risky role of former criminal and national laughingstock Jeff Gillooly in Craig Gillespie’s Oscar-winning “I, Tonya,” Stan is still chasing unconventional supporting roles in smaller features.
In Karyn Kusama’s “Destroyer,” he acts opposite Nicole Kidman as an undercover police officer helping Kidman’s no-nonsense detective through a dangerous mission that destroys her life. It’s a tricky role for any actor to hold their own opposite a proven movie star in dark, moody thriller, but Stan said that “I, Tonya” opened him up to embrace that sort of challenge.

Here’s a first look at Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War) and Denise Gough (Colette) in Monday, the next feature by Greek director Argyris Papadimitropoulos (Suntan). Principal photography recently wrapped on the two-hander co-written by Papadimitropoulos and Rob Hayes.
Monday follows the story of Mickey (Stan) and Chloe (Gough), two Americans in their mid-thirties living in Athens, who meet in the heat of summer one whirlwind weekend. When Chloe’s time in Greece is drawing to a close, she decides to give up her high-flying job back home and explore whether one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable Monday.
Said Papadimitropoulos, “The story of Mickey and Chloe is an unflinching and fun take on the romantic relationship of two people, who crave each other but are also hindered by the baggage each brings to the table. Sebastian and Denise were perfect for the roles, they...

There was a full moon in Athens this week—and it wasn't in the sky. In spite of the 56-degree temperature, Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough stripped completely naked and hopped on a motorcycle as they toured Greece Wednesday. They weren't feeling rebellious, though, as they were actually in the midst of shooting a scene for their film Monday. Although Stan's body was partially covered by Gough's, her butt was fully exposed to passersby. The actors play a self-destructive American couple living in Athens. Writer-director Argyris Papadimitropoulos explained the film's premise to Deadline in August. "Many people don't feel like getting involved in intense relationships anymore....

An unspoken consensus exists among prominent Greek filmmakers, including Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth), Athina Rachel Tsangari (Chevalier), and Argyris Papadimitropoulos (Suntan), regarding the validity of the so-called “Weird Wave.” In their rare eyes, a collective effort at creating similarly themed or formally related tales of peculiar subjects didn’t emerge premeditatedly. But in spite of their individual disassociation from this construct created by critics, Greek films in the last decade undeniably appear to share a tonal and aesthetic DNA, which may very well come from their national idiosyncrasies and dramatic tradition. As the latest entry in this mind-bending catalogue, Babis Makridis' sophomore feature Pity, co-written with Oscar-nominated scribe (and Lanthimos' longtime accomplice) Efthimis Filippou, is a master class in the psychological examination of a character on the verge...

A middle-aged man’s agonising encounter with a young woman and her friends on a Greek island is full of dour humour
Middle-aged doctor Kostis (Makis Papadimitriou from Chevalier) hauls a lifetime of disappointment along with his suitcase when he arrives on the tiny Greek resort island of Antiparos. It’s the drab depths of the low season, and no amount of optimistic Christmas tinsel can garland the fact that this is a dead end, for career and life. This pre-title sequence has something of the dour humour of Aki Kaurismäki and provides a stark contrast to the main body of the film, set eight months later in August.
After Kostis tends to injured tourist Anna (Elli Tringou), he is granted temporary membership of her gilded circle of beautiful friends. She treats him like a cross between a pet and a beer dispenser; he doggedly manufactures a reality in which they will end up together.

We’ve all encountered men like Kostis, you see them sometimes lurking in the background at clubs, sitting at the bar in a pub making smalltalk to anyone who dares stand next to them. Lonely, troubled individuals, despondent and dispirited, longing to be a part of something. Often so concerned with avoiding eye contact, we resist trying to understand them, what’s led them down this destructive path. But it’s here Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ drama Suntan thrives, getting into the protagonist’s head in this intimate character study that centres on the notion of unhealthy infatuation.

A superbly directed, quietly devastating film about an EasyJet Gustav von Aschenbach who embarrasses himself by falling in love with a younger beauty
Argyris Papadimitropoulos is a Greek film-maker whose work I didn’t know before seeing this unbearably sad story of sexual obsession. His style stands a little outside the black-comic absurdism of contemporaries such as Yorgos Lanthimos and Athina Rachel Tsangari, but he deserves to be as well known as them.
Suntan is tremendously acted, fiercely and instantly absorbing, a tragicomic tale of male midlife breakdown, featuring someone who could possibly be described as an EasyJet Gustav von Aschenbach. Makis Papadimitriou (who was in Tsangari’s film Chevalier) is excellent as Kostis, a plump, bald, middle-aged doctor who, after an unspecified history of personal disappointment, takes up a job as local practitioner on a Greek island whose economy depends on the summer months, when it becomes party central for beautiful twentysomethings.
