I Kill Giants is quite a name for a movie. A really good name actually because with that and the awesome artwork on its poster, I was immediately intrigued…. Based on the comic book of the same title, I Kill Giants tells the story of a troubled girl, Barbara (Madison Wolfe) who believes giants are coming to her town and she is the one to stop them. She has some help in new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) as well as her sister Karen (Imogen Poots) and the school psychologist Mrs Molle (Zoe Saldana) who don’t initially believe what she is saying.
Those looking for a horror movie full of giant slaying might be a little disappointed to hear that this isn’t that kind of film.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A movie as thrillingly weird as its protagonist. We are totally enrapt by the wonder and the terror of her imagination, and the power of it to create joy and solace. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
I Kill Giants is not a fantasy movie. It’s a drama about fantasy: about the power of stories to help us understand our fears and cope with our anxieties and escape from our pain, at least for a little while. But in a rare creative conjunction, this movie is as thrillingly weird as its protagonist, 12-year-old Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe: The Conjuring 2, Joy). We have no doubt...

While the main creative force behind I Kill Giants is unquestionably screenwriter Joe Kelly, who adapted his own limited comic series of the same name that he co-created with artist J.M. Ken Niimura, director Anders Walter’s past work including his Oscar-winning short, Helium, shows he’s hardly a stranger to the source material’s subject matter. Kelly and Niimura found success creating a work that reflects what happens when a child uses their imagination to confront a still abstract understanding of death.
It’s no surprise then that the two films I thought about while watching this adaptation were A Monster Calls and Where the Wild Things Are. I Kill Giants plays like a hybrid of sorts that’s just as cognizant of keeping things as darkly resonant. It’s okay for a family film targeting an audience that would call its lead (Madison Wolfe’s Barbara Thorson) a...

As anticipation builds for Anders Walter's adaption of the graphic novel I Kill Giants the official poster dropped today and it is a real attention grabber. If you do not know what the graphic novel is about surely you want to know what the wee girl with the glowing glowing hammer wants to do against that giant in the distance. I will even forgive the go-to blue/orange hues and glowing embers this time around. Are giants real? That's the essential question at the heart of a new clip from I Kill Giants. The film tells "the story of Barbara Thorsen (Madison Wolfe), a teenage girl who chooses to escape the realities of school and a drab family life by retreating into her magical world of Titans and Giants," according to the official verbiage. "With the help of her new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) and her school therapist (Zoe Saldana), she will learn to battle her Giants and face her fears - tackling the mean bullies at school, her sister (Imogen Poots) and her difficult work situation, and eventually her fear of death." My interest in this project dates back to the comic book series, written by Joe Kelly, who...

Liked the opening teaser with the Doctor (Matt Smith) and his portrait being painted, then hiding under the damsel's dress. Showing us what the Doctor has been up to without his companions. He was also imprisoned in the Tower and escaped in the Tardis. As well as attempting an escape in a World War Two escape tunnel. As well as in the Laurel and Hardy movie, on the TV. Amy (Karen Gillan) opens the blue envelope which is an unsigned invitation to a planet called America. River (Alex Kingston) also gets one. As for the name, this tells us we're already in the future, since it's no longer Planet Earth. The Doctor waits for them to arrive and now sports a Stetson. "Stetsons are cool." River shoots it from his head. Amy explains that River and the Doctor are time-travellers so they don't meet in the right order; when they compare notes,...

Usually Americans are the ones to adapt foreign concepts for their markets. This year alone has seen three remakes of British television shows to hit the American airwaves and it’s only February: MTV adapted E4’s controversial teen-drama “Skins” for the American market, Syfy remade BBC Three’s “Being Human” and Showtime went with a new take on E4’s long-running drama “Shameless”.
It’s rather unusual for a British network to adapt an American tv series, but that’s exactly what ITV did with its newest drama-series “Marchlands”, which premiered last week. “Marchlands” is based on the American tv series “The Oaks”. Written by David Schulner, it was developed for Fox in 2008 and starred Matthew Morrison (”Glee”) and Jeremy Renner (”The Hurt Locker”) among others, but was ultimately rejected by the network’s executives, when the produced pilot failed to make an impression. Rejected pilots rarely get a second chance of life,...
