Visit Films, New Story close French sale on Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry ‘Good One’ (exclusive)
In an early deal Visit Films has licensed French rights to New Story on India Donaldson’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight selection Good One.
Donaldson’s feature debut premiered in Sundance and follows 17-year-old Sam on a weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills as she contends with the competing egos of her father and his oldest friend.
Newcomer Lily Colias stars alongside James Le Gros and Danny McCarthy.
Graham Mason, Diana Irvine, Wilson Cameron, and Donaldson served as producers. Sarah Winshall’s (I Saw the TV Glow) Smudge Films, and Neil Champagne, Veronica Diaferia and Sara Eolin of Tinygiant served as executive producers.

Exclusive: Metrograph Pictures announced on Wednesday that Good One — the first feature from writer-director India Donaldson, which premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival — will open in NY/LA on August 9 and expand nationwide in the following weeks.
That weekend, it will be up against Neon’s horror pic Cuckoo starring Hunter Schafer, Amazon MGM’s boxing drama The Fire Inside starring Brian Tyree Henry, Sony’s It Ends With Us, Lionsgate’s Borderlands, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Warner Bros thriller Trap.

Visit Films has come on board to represent international sales on India Donaldson’s Good One, which was just announced in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight line-up.
The film receives its international premiere on the Croisette after it world-premiered in Sundance in January.
As previously announced, Metrograph Pictures acquired North American rights to Good One in its first buy since moving into distribution.

Comedians Colin Burgess and Anthony Oberbeck lead a fully improvised indie film about the hilarious hijinks of fatherhood.
Burgess and Oberbeck are credited as co-writers for “Dad & Step-Dad,” which marks Brooklyn-based artist Tynan DeLong’s feature directorial debut. IndieWire exclusively debuts the trailer for the buzzed-about film that debuted on indie streaming platform NoBudge.

Metrograph Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Good One,” one of the breakouts of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The indie film had its world premiere in the U.S. Narrative Competition section. It’s the feature debut of writer and director India Donaldson, and stars newcomer Lily Collias, whose performance captivated critics, alongside James Le Gros (“Showing Up”) and Danny McCarthy.
This marks the first title acquired by Metrograph Pictures, which recently expanded into releasing films theatrically under the leadership of David Laub, a former A24 executive who now heads distribution for the new studio growing out of Metrograph’s New York theater. The film will receive a national theatrical release in summer 2024.
“We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to release India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance breakout as our first acquisition under David’s new leadership of Metrograph Pictures,” Christian Grass, CEO of Metrograph, said in a statement.

Director Conor Dooley’s all-encompassing comedy short Gold and Mud is a tale of one woman’s interaction with love and loss. A story told across a series of intimate vignettes that, when connected, depict many of life’s pitfalls and absurdities. The brilliance of Dooley’s film is in how subtly profound it is. You’ll be watching along laughing at his protagonist Ana (who is played with heart and humility by Ana Fabrega) and her shenanigans but before long you’ll realise that it’s resonating on a much deeper, emotional level. With Gold and Mud recently arriving online Dn joined Dooley for a conversation about his short, talking through the creative challenges he set himself from the off, how he shot the majority of the film in his own home, and the tonal balance of heart and fart that he always strives to achieve.

"Blemish, you don't even like music!" "Who ever said that?" Time for something a bit funky and tons of fun. The Quarry is an 11-minute animated short film comedy made by the illustrator / animation filmmaker Graham Mason based in NYC. it was originally created for Adult Swim Smalls, their short films spin-off featuring all kinds of wacky, weird creations. The Quarry is described as a "soap opera about rocks" though it's much more of a sitcom about rocks working at a quarry. One of them tries to ask out his co-worker on a date, and things don't go as planned. Featuring the voices of Brad Howe, Matthew Maher, Grace Rex, and Peter Smith. It likely won't be turned into a primetime sitcom anytime soon, but it's a fun escape into the wacky world of rocks trying to, uh, have a solid life. I laughed the most at the rock keyboard at the start.

82 films have been selected to screen during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, eight episodic titles and a New Frontier interactive experience have made the cut and will be included in the upcoming festival.
17,435 projects were submitted for 2024 inclusion, setting a new festival record.
“From the first edition in 1985, Sundance Film Festival has aimed to provide a space to gather, celebrate, and engage with risk-taking artists that are committed to bringing their independent visions to audiences — the Festival remains true to that goal to this day,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President. “It continues to evolve, but its legacy of showcasing bold work that starts necessary conversations continues with the 2024 program.”
The 40th Sundance Film Festival will take place January 18 – 28, 2024, in Park City and Salt Lake City. Ticket packages and passes are currently on sale.

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.

India Donaldson picked up the Polish Film Institute Award for her upcoming feature “Good One” at the American Film Festival in Wrocław, coming with a $50,000 cash prize for post-production in Poland.
“It’s an affirmation of how we have been working and what we have been working towards,” Los Angeles-based Donaldson told Variety after the ceremony.

Not long ago, an award-winning Polish composer who’d scored dozens of films approached Ula Śniegowska about U.S. in Progress, an industry event conceived as a bridge between the Polish and American markets that runs parallel to the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
“He approached me saying, ‘I’ve done enough in the Polish market. I need an introduction to the international market. Can you, as U.S. in Progress, help me?’” Śniegowska recalls. “It seems we are a perfect matchmaker for those types of companies to have their work exposed in the U.S.”

Cult variety TV show “The Eyeslicer” is gearing up for its second season, one that will move the streaming series into the terrestrial world with a brand new mini film festival, taking place in Brooklyn from September 14 to 17. The brainchild of creators Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell, the episodic series invites some of independent film’s most exciting directors to embrace their weird and experimental side in making a variety of short content, which is then weaved into thematic episodes.
