According to WhoSampled, that endlessly useful resource for determining which artists should probably be sued, bits of Blade Runner have been paid homage to—and straight-up pilfered—more than 80 times in the past 35 years, turning up in works from everyone from Ryuichi Sakamoto to Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Rutger Hauer’s…

This film about the massive-selling metal act X-Japan follows their ups and downs since the early 1980s, as they reunite and try to break America
A watchable and interesting – if a tad worshipful – study of soft-metal rockers X-Japan, a huge, hysteria-inducing force in their native land since the early 1980s but only now, after breakup and reconvening, making serious inroads in the west. Sitting in that point in the Venn diagram where Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Mötley Crüe overlap, X-Japan have evolved their own twists on the pomp-rock style: insane haircuts, kabuki makeup, a drummer who collapses after every performance, and a lead singer who disappeared for a decade into a sinister cult. There’s quite a lot of adolescent-angst talk of death and blood, but some real pathos under the surface shimmer: particularly with drummer Yoshiki, the film’s main focus, who still seems in shock over his father...

After three decades of being forced to hire Yello to ride in your backseat, there will soon be an easier way to cruise the streets to the sounds of ’80s lust anthem “Oh Yeah.” La-La Land Records has announced a Sept. 13 debut for the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack—the first official release of its kind, following 30 years of cobbled-together mix-tapes, YouTube playlists, Japanese bootlegs, and awkward negotiations with Swiss synthpop musicians. First hinted at back in June, the now-confirmed soundtrack will arrive in a limited edition of just 5,000 copies, and it features not only familiar songs like the aforementioned “Oh Yeah” and Wayne Newton’s “Danke Schoen,” but also Ira Newborn’s score along with alternate and unused source cues.
Here’s the full track list, according to Film Music Reporter:
1. Love Missile F1-11 (Ultraviolence Mix) – Sigue Sigue Sputnik (6:58)
2. Oh ...

Here's a thought. Supposing at the end of Doctor Who's 26th season, comedy writer supreme Richard Curtis made a last-minute bid to rescue the popular science fiction show from the jaws of death? After all, now that the hugely successful Blackadder had come to an end in 1989, a vacancy would have welcomed Curtis with open arms. Not only that, but a spell as Doctor Who helmsman would have meant no Four Weddings And A Funeral, and more crucially, no Vicar Of Dibley, a crushingly unfunny attempt at sitcom that relied on stereotypical yokel simpletons and blindingly obvious punchlines that could be seen as far away as Uranus. Doctor Who though - now for Curtis, that might have been a different proposition.

Perhaps you read that Mariah Carey's upcoming CD, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, will come with a 34-page booklet packed with ads for upscale perfumes and liquors. Her label, Island/Def Jam, is promoting the venture as a ground-breaker in integrating marketing for a music industry that has seen a steadily increasing decline in music sales over the past decade. But as pioneering as it is, Mariah is not the first artist to dip her toe into musical product placement by teaming up with advertisers to hawk her music.
Last year, Chris Brown's label cut a deal with the Wm. Wrigley, Jr. company to have the singer turn his song "Forever" into a jingle in ads for Doublemint gum by using the 1famous "double your pleasure, double your fun" tagline. While plenty of singers have lent their songs out to be used in commercials, the collaboration with the gum...
