For decades, a major restaurant lobby has devoted millions of dollars to stomping out bills that would improve the lives of the industry’s workers — including attempts to raise state and federal minimum wages to 15 per hour. As it turns out, the workers who stood to gain from those legislative efforts had unwittingly funded the restaurant lobby’s war on them. Now, a group of Democratic senators are demanding answers to find out how workers came to fund a fight against their own interests.

“We’re back, baby,” Donald Trump told Chris Christie.
It was a few days before Trump’s summer 2020 campaign rally in Tulsa, Okla., and the president was excited, thinking this rally was going to be a packed, raucous affair that injected new energy into his troubled reelection run.
But it turns out that holding a raucous indoor rally during a global pandemic isn’t exactly the best of ideas, and instead of a rager, Trump got a disaster. The rally hall was full of empty seats, and a rash of...

Chris Rock, who hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live last fall, made a cameo for the season finale.
In the cold open, as the cast reflected on the unusual and surreal season marked by continued restrictions because of Covid-19, Rock appeared and noted that his hosting gig on Oct. 3 “feels like six years ago.”
“Here’s how messed up the world was when I hosted, Ok?” he said. “I wanted Kanye West to be the musical guest. And he couldn’t do it because he was running for president. Remember that?”
“Also, the week I was here, the sitting president, who said Covid would disappear, got Covid! That was this season. Then the election is over. Heat Miser loses. Big moment for SNL. Clearly the right time to leave, to end the season. But no, these idiots did 12 more shows. Even Jim Carrey knew it was time to go home.

On Friday the White House confirmed that Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, has tested positive for coronavirus. He’s one of several prominent Republicans — including Florida Senator Rick Scott, and Andrew Giuliani, son of Rudy, who confirmed they have been exposed to Covid-19 just today alone.
And of course he’s one of dozens of people in Donald Trump’s immediate orbit who have contracted the virus in the last several months, including Donald Trump himself, and Herman Cain, who died from it in July. This comes after months of efforts by the president and his associates to downplay the illness and turn efforts to prevent people dying of it into a political wedge issue.
In what is probably not a shock, once the news was public, people on social media definitely chose not to remain politely silent about their feelings regarding Don Jr.’s condition. Instead,...

Four years after he used his first Saturday Night Live monologue to address then-President Elect Donald Trump, Dave Chappelle returned to Studio 8H and addressed current President-Elect Joe Biden.
Chappelle in 2016 presided over SNL‘s previous post-election outing, just four days after Trump pulled off an unexpected victory against Hillary Clinton. In that monologue, he discussed America’s decision to elect its first “Internet troll.” He also said he’d give Trump a chance as Potus, but did so with a big asterisk attached. “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck,” he said at the time. “I’m going to give him a chance,...

Stephen Colbert ripped President Donald Trump’s months-long criticism of using absentee ballots in the 2020 presidential election between him and Joe Biden, instead pushing Maga supporters to show up and vote for him in person next Tuesday amid the pandemic. Colbert called this move “the last act” of Potus’s “death cult.”
“The virus surge could have a big effect on Trump voters,” Colbert said during Tuesday’s “Late Show” monologue. “So far, 66 million people have voted early. In fact, projections indicate the majority of ballots will be cast before Election Day for the first time in history. As Ben Franklin so wisely put it, ‘Early to bed and early to vote, get him out of the White House before he digs a moat.'”
Colbert continued: “Most of the early voting has gone to the Democrats and on the other side, Trump has spent months warning his supporters against voting by mail.

As the mad king raged at Savannah Guthrie for having the gall to question him about his conspiracy mongering, mask trutherism, and failure to even pretend to manage the coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the country, the wishcasting texts and tweets began anew.

As an O.G. Never Trumper, this is a question that I get a lot — from miserable GOP consultants, fellow ostracized Republicans, bewildered members of the political media, and liberals craving an opposition they can at least understand.

You knew this was coming. Last night’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” not only recreated the Vice Presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, but the fly that infamously lingered on Pence’s head last week during the televised head-to-head also made a very special appearance. David Cronenberg fans will recognize “SNL’s” mashup of his 1986 sci-fi movie “The Fly,” starring Jeff Goldblum, who’s channeled here by Jim Carrey as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Watch below.
The “debate” is moderated by Kate McKinnon as Susan Page. Meanwhile, guest Maya Rudolph reprised her role as Rudolph, with cast regular Beck Bennett starring as Mike Pence. Of course, Harris’ “I’m speaking” moment made it into the episode, to rowdy applause.
Joining the cold open was Kenan Thompson as Tea Party activist Herman Cain, who died of Covid-19 at the end of July.

Before Donald Trump got himself infected with the coronavirus, he had firmly secured his place as the worst president in American history. Now, after mocking Joe Biden at their first debate for mask wearing, Trump has proved to be a reckless superspreader, risking the lives of donors at a New Jersey fundraiser and the Secret Service agents sworn to protect him by demanding a bizarre motorcade photo op outside of Walter Reed hospital. One aide and associate after another of those exposed to him — and his wife — have fallen victim to the virus.

The fly on Mike Pence’s head had the Twitterverse abuzz during the vice presidential debate — so naturally, Saturday Night Live went all in during this weekend’s cold open.
In SNL‘s interpretation of events, Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden watched the debate from home and grew frustrated by Pence’s need to constantly interrupt his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris. In order to “save the soul of this nation,” Biden entered the transformation chamber from the 1986 film The Fly and became an insectoid-human creature. The mystery of the fly that landed on Mike Pence’s head at the vice-presidential debate with Senator Kamala Harris was revealed tonight on Saturday Night Live – and it was a high-tech bedeviled Joe Biden.
Maya Rudolph told the New Yorker Festival earlier this week that while she was anxious about how to translate the first and only VP debate of the 2020 campaign into a SNL opener tonight, the material “kind of wrote itself” once the languid fly landed on Pence’s head on stage on October 7.
Quoting Senator Harris’ now famous “Mr. Vice-President, I’m speaking, I’m speaking” and “let me ask the American people this, how calm were you when you didn’t know where you were going to get your next roll of toilet paper?” lines from the Susan Page moderated (in name only debate), Rudolph doubled down – “I’d like to hear the Vice-President’s response and while he speaks,...

On Wednesday night a star was born. When a fly landed on Vice President Mike Pence’s head during the debate against Sen. Kamala Harris, it was a moment that took over Twitter for the rest of the week. Naturally, the fly had prime screen time during “Saturday Night Live’s” Oct. 10 cold open sketch about the debate — but rather than cast someone new in the role, the late-night sketch comedy show hypothesized that it was Joe Biden (Jim Carrey) who teleported to the debate in order to “save the soul of this nation.”
The sketch began simply, with Kate McKinnon portraying debate moderator Susan Page and saying they would be debating a “who cares number of topics,” Beck Bennett portraying Pence, and Emmy winner Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris, entering by double-fisting cans of Lysol. The first question was for Bennett’s Pence, who stalled when asked about the...

Hours before Tuesday night’s debate, Donald Trump’s campaign accidentally sent its post-event cash-call email early. Subject line: “I just stepped off stage.” “This debate will go down in History,” the Donald Trump of the future wrote to his supporters. And he was right, though probably not in the way he’d hoped. The early reviews of the first 2020 presidential debate are in, they are unanimous, and, folks, it was not good!

Donald Trump’s rally in Henderson, Nv, didn’t get the kind of coverage that his most recent events have for one good reason: It was indoors, with many of his supporters not wearing masks and not socially distanced.
Out of health concerns, the major broadcast and cable networks kept their correspondents outside the rally.
“NBC News reporters did not go inside the rally and we will continue to follow and monitor prevailing public health guidelines regarding large indoor gatherings as we have since the start of the pandemic,” said a network spokesperson. Following Vice President Mike Pence’s keynote speech at the 2020 Republican National Convention, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow took a moment to talk about how a key element of the speech’s presentation made her afraid that a lot of old people are gonna end up being killed by Covid-19 as a result.
Pence’s speech, delivered live from Fort McHenry in Baltimore (also known as the setting for “The Star-Spangled Banner”), was notable for its contrast with the almost audience-free speeches made by the leading Democrats during last week’s DNC. He spoke in front of an audience composed mainly of older veterans and political supporters who were, notably, not remotely socially distanced, and the majority were not wearing masks. Complicating matters, according to MSNBC, Team Trump didn’t actually conduct coronavirus testing on the attendees prior to the speech.

Stewart, who hosted the Comedy Central series between 1999 and 2015, made the admission in an interview with Charlamagne tha God on his radio show The Breakfast Club.

President Donald Trump had a busy week, John Oliver noted on Last Week Tonight. He lied about where is dad was born, for no apparent reason. He repeatedly said “oranges” when he was trying to say “origins” at a White House event. He trolled Joe Biden for touching women inappropriately, which, Oliver noted accurately, “seems, you know, a bit fucking rich.”
But Trump’s biggest headline of the week by far was selecting Herman Cain to the Federal Reserve board.
Oliver and Cain go way back – to Oliver’s The Daily Show days.
Cain, a former pizza exec turned radio talk show host, made a White House bid in 2012, dropping out amid charges of sexual harassment. He’s famous for having asked a group of Cuban Americans, on a campaign stop, “How do you say ‘delicious’ in Cuban.” He once bragged about not knowing the name of the “the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-stan-stan.

Republican Congressman Jason Lewis of Minnesota is coming under fire for disparaging remarks he made about women while he was a conservative radio talk show host. Before he was elected to Congress, Lewis was the host of a syndicated radio show that ran from 2009 to 2014.
One of the remarks, unearthed by CNN, was from 2011 and concerned sexual harassment allegations against then-presidential candidate Herman Cain. When Cain was head of the National Restaurant Association, two women received monetary settlements after they claimed Cain behaved inappropriately. On his radio show, Lewis questioned...

Samantha Bee is facing a social media storm following her vulgar slam against Ivanka Trump on Wednesday’s edition of “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.”
In a segment about President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, Bee referred to Trump’s daughter, who is a White House adviser, as a “feckless c—” for posting a photo of herself with her young child after a week of headlines about federal authorities losing track of some 1,500 migrant children who were separated from their parents.
Bee’s remark is drawing comparisons to the racist slur posted by Roseanne Barr earlier this week, a move that prompted ABC to cancel Barr’s top-rated sitcom reboot of “Roseanne.” That was a shocking decision that Disney and ABC leaders attributed to the “repugnant” and racially charged nature of Barr’s statement likening former Obama administration adviser Valerie Jarrett to an ape.

Herman Cain — or whoever is in charge of his Twitter account — is a “Twin Peaks” fan if his Twitter feed is any indication. The former presidential candidate, who made a name for himself as a Tea Party activist and a Fox News contributor, has been linking out articles from his website, hermancain.com, but with the added bonus of “Twin Peaks” stills. None of the images contain any spoilers (don’t worry), but it’s notable for how he pairs them up. For a story about an Al Gore comment on global warming, he linked it with a picture of Bobby Briggs.

Every week, comedian Wyatt Cenac and friends perform stand-up in Brooklyn for a show entitled “Night Train with Wyatt Cenac.” Cenac fans from outside of the New York area were out of luck — until now, thanks to the comedy subscription service Seeso, which is offering online viewers a front row seat.
Seeso, which is owned by NBC Universal, debuts six ninety-minute episodes today. Filmed in front of a live audience at Littlefield in Brooklyn, “Night Train” is hosted by Cenac, while also featuring an eclectic mix of some of the most exciting comedians in New York, from up-and-comers to established names. The show capture’s Cenac’s sensibilities; proudly black, reluctantly hipster, Ellen DeGeneres clean and always funny.
Cenac served as a writer and correspondent for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” from 2008-2012. However, when Cenac called Stewart out for doing a “voice” in a Herman Cain bit, long-simmering...

Ben Carson is digging up his dirty past ahead of Tuesday’s Gop debate so CNN, MSNBC, Huffington Post, Politico and any other “liberal media” outlets don’t have to. The Republican candidate, who’s currently leading the pack in polls, has launched a Twitter campaign targeting news organizations that have been critical of his past. “Ben Carson is a childhood thief,” one meme directed at Politico reads. “He got caught stealing second during a kickball game at recess.” Also Read: Herman Cain Blasts 'Vultures' at Politico, Defends Ben Carson Against 'Hit Piece' Carson even got his campaign staff in on the action.

Former Gop presidential favorite Herman Cain chimed in on critical media coverage of Ben Carson, calling Politico in particular a bunch of “media vultures.” Cain took to his website to rail against the “lie” Politico perpetrated against Ben Carson, specifically referring to a controversial story the all-things-politics site ran on Friday which initially said Carson fabricated a story about being offered a full scholarship to West Point. “Politico pulled the same dishonest crap on me in 2011,” the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza wrote, referring to his time on the receiving end of media fire during the 2012 primary campaign, which.

Talk about trying to fill enormous shoes. On September 28th, viewers of The Daily Show will find a new face behind Jon Stewart's freshly vacated desk: Trevor Noah, a smart, politically minded stand-up comedian from South Africa who's huge abroad but an almost entirely unknown quantity here. Stewart transformed the politically minded talk show into a late-night institution. The challenge for Noah, 31, is to honor what his forebear accomplished while ushering the show into a new era — one in which social-media drives news cycles as much as, if not more than,...

As Donald Trump remains atop the polls even following last week's first Gop presidential debate, the argument that he is merely a "fringe" candidate like Michele Bachmann or Herman Cain from the 2012 election cycle is starting to sound less credible. Chris Christie used it earlier this month and last night Seth Meyers brought it up during his interview with Anderson Cooper.

Before he destroyed, eviscerated, and owned Fox News, Jon Stewart was a stand-up comedian. Now, with only days remaining in his Daily Show tenure, Stewart returned to the stage for the first time in a decade, dropping in unannounced at the Comedy Cellar to do a ten-minute set. Intimidatingly enough, he had to follow Louis C.K., who was there doing the same thing. Stewart was urged on by former Daily Show (and current Nightly Show) producer Rory Albanese, who Instagrammed the whole thing. There's no video from the appearance yet, so it's unclear what he joked about, but we're guessing he probably stayed away from Herman Cain.

Trevor Noah, who takes over "The Daily Show" Sept. 28 after Jon Stewart leaves Aug. 6, just outlined his vision for the show at the Television Critics Association press tour. And while he said "it's about the show first, and I'm the person people are looking at," there are changes ahead related to its new host. Primarily, he said the show will reflect his perspective. Compared to Stewart, "the way we would look at the same story would be completely different ... because we would have access to different jokes, different sides of the story" and have "different sensitivities." He said that "the way you approach a story" is affected by your background and experiences. For example, with a story related to race, "Jon would have to empathize; I myself come from a different place." Regarding the story about Mike Huckabee's offensive Holocaust reference, Noah said, "Jon would comment on it from...

As Jon Stewart counts down the days until he bids The Daily Show farewell, one of his former writers and correspondents is remembering a not-so-fond memory. In an interview on Marc Maron's Wtf podcast this week, Wyatt Cenac, who worked on the satirical Comedy Central show for about seven years, recalled an explosive verbal confrontation he had with the host, who he considered a "mentor" and "hero." Cenac said that in 2011, when he was the sole black writer on the series, he was bothered by Stewart's on-air impression of then presidential candidate and Republican leader Herman Cain, who is also black. "It reminded me of like a Kingfish type of a thing," he...

I write about TV for a living, I watch a ton of TV, and I read a lot of news about TV, including a number of much-hyped stories that seem unavoidable all over the Internet. Yet even I can't bring myself to care about some of them. For instance:
1. The Taylor Swift/Nicki Minaj/Katy Perry MTV Vma Feud. Two years, five years, 10 years from now, no one else will care either, so let's stop caring now.
2. The VMAs themselves. The one day a year MTV pretends it still cares about music videos. Again, a year from now, will you remember who won any of these prizes?
3. The Jon-Snow-Is-Alive rumors. Either he is or isn't, but I'd rather just find out when I watch "Game of Thrones" next season and not endure nine months of speculation.
4. Wealthy White Senior Angeleno Dads Who Become Women. Jeffrey Tambor deserved an Emmy nod for "Transparent,...

Yikes. Former Daily Show writer Wyatt Cenac revealed in a new interview that he once challenged Jon Stewart for his black impersonation, which resulted in a blowout fight with the Comedy Central host. Cenac, 39, recalled the 2011 incident on a recent episode of Wtf With Marc Maron, saying it stemmed from Stewart's impersonation of Herman Cain, a 2012 Republican presidential candidate who is black. At the time, Cenac was the sole black writer on staff at the Daily Show, and raised his eyebrows when Stewart announced [...]...

On a recent episode of Wtf With Marc Maron, former Daily Show writer Wyatt Cenac recalled a moment when host Jon Stewart exploded at him in front of the entire late night show’s staff. It all pertained to Stewart’s imitation of 2012 Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain; an impersonation that just went too far for Cenac. At the time prior to the 2012 presidential election, Cenac was the only black writer and found Stewart’s knock on Cain coming from “kind of an…...

While there are going to be a lot of fond farewells to Jon Stewart, who will do his final episode of The Daily Show August 6, Wyatt Cenac has a much more complicated memory of the late-night host. Cenac, who was a writer and correspondent on The Daily Show for over four years, spoke with Marc Maron on his "Wtf" podcast about what it was like working with Stewart. Maron asked, "And you got along with Jon?" "Naw," replied Cenac. While Cenac initially wanted to see Stewart as a father figure, he didn't get that. What he remembers instead is a moment when Stewart screamed at him in front of the entire staff. "There had, in my experience, never been an explosion like that," he said. This happened back in the summer of 2011, when Stewart was roundly pillorying the 2012 presidential hopefuls, including one Herman Cain. He made fun of...

Donald Trump has stolen the headlines in the 2016 race for the White House. He’s been outspoken against immigration, naïve on his measures to combat Isis, and even taken a (tiny) shot at sacred Republican institutions like Fox News. Despite all his blustering, it seems that his tactless offensive is working. Trump recently moved to the top of a nationwide Republican primary poll. But, unbeknownst to the real estate billionaire, the majority of analysts still see him as a farce and he is the least-liked candidate out there. In many ways, Donald Trump has become the Vuvuzela of Republican candidates: Frustratingly hard to ignore, impossible to comprehend, and, hopefully, an annoyance for only a couple of months.
Despite his eccentric opinions and delusional rhetoric, no one can deny Trump has this je ne sais coif about him. You simply cannot turn away. His opening campaign speech read...

Welcome to the March 9, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's (almost) daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story: Leave Lily James' body alone. "On one hand it's upsetting, on the other hand it's just boring," James told The Huffington Post about those who have questioned whether her tiny waist in Disney's "Cinderella" was altered in post-production to appear smaller. "Why do women always get pointed at for their bodies? And why is this whole thing happening and I'm constantly having to justify myself? International Women's Day has just gone, and it just feels just a bit sad that it's still happening. You know, I'm very healthy and I always have been." Want more?
