The Morning Show writer, showrunner and executive producer Charlotte Stoudt joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the intricacies of running a faux newsroom, ripping stories straight from the headlines and the upcoming Season 4.
In Season 3, the news show’s future is questioned when a tech mogul takes an interest in the parent network, Uba. Unexpected alliances form, secrets are weaponized, and everyone is forced to confront their moral judgments in and out of the newsroom.
“It’s a gift to create characters that people love and will watch do very flawed, messy and sometimes awful things,” Stoudt said about the joys of the series getting renewed at Apple TV+. “I got to come in and think about how to torture them a little more. And I think the other thing that I love about the show is that it has the opportunity to speak to the moment.

While taking part in a PaleyFest conversation on Friday night about the most recent season of The Morning Show, Reese Witherspoon got honest about the current state of Hollywood and concerns she has about the future.
Asked by moderator Kara Swisher about this particular time in tech and media, roughly six months after the end of the actors strike, Witherspoon — who serves as an executive producer on The Morning Show and has become one of the industry’s top producers via her Hello Sunshine banner — told the crowd at the Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre that the streaming landscape has changed in recent months.
“Streaming was like the biggest thing for three to four years, and there was a never-ending constant smash for content, and, like, literally we could sell anything,” the star said. “What I’m seeing right now, I think from the buying and selling landscape side of it,...

When Charlotte Stoudt was approached to take over as showrunner of Apple TV+’s hit “The Morning Show” in Season 3, she couldn’t resist the challenge. “I wasn’t sure I could do it, so I had to try,” she tells Variety, which will honor Stoudt with its showrunner award at the Scad TVfest in Atlanta on Feb. 9.
The latest season of “The Morning Show,” which aired last fall, continued to dial up the drama as Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) discovered that her brother was involved in the Jan. 6 insurrection — and covered it up, putting her life and career in jeopardy. Alex (Jennifer Aniston) started a relationship with billionaire Paul Marks (Jon Hamm), who was in line to acquire the Uba network in a deal orchestrated by CEO Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup).
As is “The Morning Show” formula, all of this was going on while real-life matters — including the overturning of Roe v.

“We knew this season was different.”
That’s how “The Morning Show” star and executive producer Reese Witherspoon begins Variety’s conversation about the third season of the Apple TV+ series. Co-star (and fellow executive producer) Jennifer Aniston adds, “It had a different shape to it.”
In their first interview after the SAG-AFTRA strike — and the day of the Critics’ Choice nominations — Witherspoon and Aniston dissect Season 3’s wild twists and turns, which include a trip to space with Jon Hamm’s billionaire character Paul Marks, as well as a Jan. 6 insurrection storyline.
The two have known each other for more than 20 years, and as Aniston puts it: “We’re partners. We’re friends. We’re girlfriends, and we share all sorts of heartbreaks in life and love and everything.” To that end, when she begins crying while speaking about the death of her “Friends” co-star Matthew Perry, Witherspoon immediately grabs Aniston’s hand,...

With The Morning Show named today as one of the AFI Awards’ 2023 honorees for television program of the year, the question arises, how will the Apple TV+ show possibly up the ante for Season 4?
Will Bradley be in jail ? Will Alex be running everything? And will Cory finally give up and go home to his mom to sing another round of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”? With the FBI, a company merger, and a sociopathic businessman (Jon Hamm) in the mix at the close of Season 3, it seems there’s everything to play for next season.
“Everybody keeps asking me if Bradley’s in jail,” Reese Witherspoon said during a press conference moderated by Deadline on Thursday, “but I don’t know if I’m in trouble.”
“But you’ve tried on jumpsuits, right?” executive producer Michael Ellenberg said.
“Did you decide on a shade of orange?” Jennifer Aniston joked.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

The Morning Show wrapped its third season Nov. 8 — a moment showrunner and executive producer Charlotte Stoudt admits was an emotional one for members of the creative team, who gathered to watch the season finale at Hollywood’s Linwood Dunn Theater. “It’s really thrilling to watch the show with an audience,” said Stoudt. “It’s not the finale until people see it. [This story contains spoilers from the finale of The Morning Show season three, “The Overview Effect.”]
The Morning Show’s season three finale is the first time a season of the Apple TV+ series didn’t end with a black screen.
Both seasons one and two had wrapped with a broadcast that cut to black, delivering back-to-back cliffhanger endings that provided then-showrunner Kerry Ehrin, who developed the series, and the writers with enough runway to completely shift the series when it returned. When Ehrin departed as showrunner after season two (she remains on the series as a consultant and has an overall deal with Apple), Charlotte Stoudt says there were enough breadcrumbs in the season two finale for her to piece together and begin to plot season three, which released its finale Wednesday after a weekly 10-episode season.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Morning Show” Season 3 finale.
Even Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup), the king of chaos theory, couldn’t have predicted the rollercoaster “Morning Show” Season 3 finale. Many moves were made, both solid and uncertain, by Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), Laura Peterson (Julianna Margulies) and Paul Marks (Jon Hamm).
Turns out Bradley was right about Paul Marks, even before he confirmed her suspicions by attempting to silence her on air by threatening to out her big bad secret. He even knew that Laura had searched the hack database to discover that Bradley covered up her brother’s assault of a police officer at the Capitol and that she didn’t report the integrity-compromising news. After Cory tried to convince Bradley that Paul leaked the piece in the Vault that cast Cory as Bradley’s groomer, she figured out that Paul had her surveilled,...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details for the Season 3 finale of The Morning Show.
Uba may never be the same after Season 3 of The Morning Show.
Wednesday’s finale brought the hammer down on Paul Marks (Jon Hamm), a tech mogul who had been trying to take over the media company. Despite all of Cory’s (Billy Crudup) attempts to intercept any naysayers, it was Alex who figured out a way to put a stop to the sale of Uba to Hyperion.
You might be thinking, Alex? But hasn’t she been Team Paul for a majority of the season? Didn’t she just take offense when Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) told her she thought Paul was shady? Well, yes. But all that changes when Alex pays a visit to Bradley, who is spiraling after resigning from Uba on air and having a run-in with Paul where he alludes to the...

[This story contains spoilers from The Morning Show season three, episode seven, “Strict Scrutiny.”]
Much of The Morning Show‘s seventh episode centers around network news host Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) joining her boss Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) on a tense visit to his mother’s house outside of the city. Cory’s mother, played by Lindsay Duncan, is a firebrand in her own right, and Cory pays her a rare personal visit in hopes of curbing her political influence with the DOJ to his advantage amid the potential sale of their network, Uba, to billionaire tech titan Paul Marks (Jon Hamm).
“It was a proud moment for women everywhere when you told the world on live TV that you had an abortion,” Martha Ellison (Duncan) tells Bradley. And the compliment is twofold for the Apple series audience: It’s a reminder that Bradley is a pioneer for women’s rights — she fearlessly ignited a...

[This story contains spoilers from the sixth episode of The Morning Show season three, “The Stanford Student.”]
The stars of The Morning Show constantly make controversial choices. That’s what makes them relatable, according to the creative team behind the Apple TV+ series, who had promised eyebrow-raising decisions to come from their starring protagonists — played by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon — in the currently airing third season.
And following last week’s 2020 flashback reveal that Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson buried evidence around the Jan. 6 insurrection, the sixth episode in the media drama placed Aniston’s Alex Levy in the hot seat as she decides to blur ethical lines — once again — when it comes to her personal relationships.
Alex famously had an intimate relationship with her disgraced former morning show co-anchor, Mitch Kessler, played by Steve Carell. Mitch, who was fired from the show within the show, also titled The Morning Show, over sexual assault, nearly cost Alex her career:...

Jon Hamm’s Paul Marks, who burst into “The Morning Show” scene in Season 3, wasn’t inspired by just one tech mogul or finance billionaire, but he is certainly “an amalgamation” of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and other figures, according to executive producer Michael Ellenberg.
Marks — whom Cory Ellison (Billy Cruddup) courted professionally for a network-saving deal in which Marks acquires Uba — ranges from Jeff Bezos-level wealth and power, with his Hyperion One rocket and other space exploration endeavors (like Bezos’ Blue Origin), to Elon Musk-level shrewdness and tech surveillance background.
Ellenberg sees past the black and white into the gray area surrounding Marks, especially in Episode 6 when some dirt about him resurfaces as Alex (Jennifer Aniston) plans to interview him on her streaming series “Alex Unfiltered.”
“There’s no shortage of tech and finance billionaires who are taking swings inside traditional media, streaming, social media, etc.,” Ellenberg told TheWrap.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “The Stanford Student,” the sixth episode of “The Morning Show” Season 3.
Oh, Alex.

But then Paul Marks happens.
Episode 6, “The Stanford Student,” sees Alex interview Paul (Jon Hamm), the tech billionaire attempting to buy the network, on her show in an attempt to unearth his past and investigate whether she and her colleagues will be able to maintain their journalistic independence under his ownership. [This story contains spoilers from the fifth episode of The Morning Show season three, “Love Island.”]
After jumping ahead two years, The Morning Show hit rewind this week to go back to where the Apple TV+ series ended last season: March of 2020.
The fifth episode in season three, titled “Love Island,” flashed back to shortly after the outbreak of Covid-19 to fill viewers in on what happened in the missing two years between seasons three and four of the Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston media drama.
Most notably, it answered the big question looming over the first half of season three: What’s the secret between news anchor Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) and Uba network boss Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup)? A secret so big they would do anything to keep it quiet? (Even suggest paying out the network’s hackers $50 million to keep their private communications from being leaked.)

In the first episode of The Morning Show‘s return, Jennifer Aniston’s character’s hot take on the new tech titan played by Jon Hamm is that he’s a “need-for-speed, hardass from Silicon Valley.” Top Uba news anchor Alex Levy (played by Aniston) gets to meet the Apple TV+ media drama’s curious new character as she preps for him to launch her into space. The billionaire, named Paul Marks (Hamm), has recruited her for the maiden voyage of his Hyperion One suborbital rocket, which will mark his entry into the spaceflight race.
The audience is sure to have a similar hot take on Paul Marks, who invokes Elon Musk comparisons after the two-episode premiere. “Paul Marks is a character who is an amalgam of a lot of different individuals,” however, executive producer Lauren Neustadter tells The Hollywood Reporter.

When The Morning Show returns, it’s two years after the events of the season two finale.
The timeline of the Jennifer Aniston- and Reese Witherspoon-starring Apple TV+ media drama had ended in March of 2020 with a no-filter, live broadcast from Covid-positive anchor Alex Levy (Aniston), who told her viewers to “stay safe and stay sane” as the country was unknowingly on the cusp of lockdown. Network boss Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) had just confessed his love to anchor Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon), whose girlfriend, Laura Peterson (Julianna Margulies), escaped to Montana; and the crew of the series’ The Morning Show was preparing to deliver the news remotely amid the looming pandemic.

We now know the pandemic was just the beginning of the collective trauma the world has gone through these past few years. The chum bucket of issues that have politicized and weaponized humans against one another since 2020 often feels bottomless. Now, “The Morning Show” is here to recapture many of those harrowing moments with a third season that refuses to come up for air.
When Season 2 went dark, Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) had just been diagnosed with Covid. The first moments of The Morning Show’s season three trailer look like office politics as usual, with Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy and Billy Crudup’s Cory Ellison arguing over what’s apparently an “unprecedented” ask from Alex.
Things take a turn, however, when Uba gets hacked, setting up what looks to be the central crisis for the drama’s coming season, which premieres Sept. 13. While Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) announces the cyberattack on the air, everyone worries about what secrets will come out in its aftermath — and the potential “financial disaster,” as Cory puts it, that could accompany it.
Enter Jon Hamm’s Paul Marks. The Mad Men star will play a tech mogul whose money can help keep Uba solvent but will likely come with strings attached. He also seems to have a past with Alex that raises a few eyebrows within the network.

Her co-anchor on Uba’s beloved morning news show Alex Levy has managed to make it through Covid as well as a mild cancellation (for flying to a Covid hot zone in Italy to see Steve Carrell’s Mitch Kessler) in season two.
“I need to have a say in the future of this place,” she added.
Season 3 will throw the future of the network into question when tech titan Paul Marks (Jon Hamm) takes an interest in Uba.
“You need a miracle,” Hamm’s voiceover as Marks added. “I am offering you a lifeline.”

If there’s one theme of The Morning Show, it’s that secrets never stay buried.
Ever since the launch of the Apple TV+ media drama, the starring characters played by Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, along with their allies at the fictional Uba morning news program, have attempted to expose those secrets, staging coup after coup, in hopes of carrying out a cultural revolution. And with the release of the first teaser for the forthcoming season (below), the third go-around for the Tms team looks to be no exception.
The one-minute look at season three spotlights each of the main characters following the cliffhanger events of season two. Change-maker Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) says she wanted to make a difference, and her partner-in-crime Alex Levy (Aniston) says she needs to have a say in the future of the show; amped-up executive Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) says he wants to build...

It’s a new day at The Morning Show.
The last time we checked in on the anchors and execs at Uba, Covid was wreaking havoc in all of their lives. The pandemic nearly sunk the network’s streaming service before it even launched. Alex fell sick yet decided to show viewers what the illness looked like in real time as she and Chip broadcast from her apartment. Daniel left his job to attend to his ailing grandfather in another part of the country. Bradley found her missing brother, Hal, in an emergency room packed with people hoping to get help with their Covid symptoms.
