Theatre Uncut's visionary series of political plays appeal as much for the ideas as the drama. And Strangers on a Train runs out of steam
What began as a hand grenade has ended up as a cluster bomb. Three years ago Hannah Price conceived the idea of Theatre Uncut, a political new writing company and different version of protest theatre. It ingeniously brings new technology to bear on traditional agitprop, combining live performance and instantaneous multiplication.
The scheme, in which Price was joined as artistic director by Emma Callender, was to commission short plays that reacted to current politics and would be free for a month for anyone to download and perform anywhere. The original spur was the coalition's public spending cuts. In 2012 work came from Egypt and Iceland, Greece and Spain. This year, having consulted its rapidly growing audience – an audience which even by Young...

Samantha Womack has revealed that she disagreed with EastEnders bosses' decision to kill off Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace). Womack, who played Ronnie Mitchell until last year, watched her on-screen daughter run over by Janine (Charlie Brooks) in 2009. "I found that really upsetting and disappointing," she told the Sunday Mercury. "They didn't get the chance to be mother and daughter. "We dangled that carrot in front of viewers for such a long time and I wanted the audience to have a happy ending (more)...

The Tolkienesque environs of Tantillion aren't as rustic as they seem. With science outlawed and the populace living under a new police state - having only just got rid of an old one - there are, strangely, rockets to be seen flying over the vast forests of the nation. But it must be magic, because magic is all that is allowed, with the study of science outlawed and all the 'charlatans' who practiced it long since plucked into obscurity from the country's universities. With the exception of Professor Cantha (Jenny Agutter), who is in hiding but visited frequently and secretly by the young foundling barmaid Kitty (Lauren Crace). This time Kitty has brought with her a very scientific stranger indeed - a Time Lord called The Minister Of Chance (Julian Wadham), able to bridge time and space with the creation of intradimensional doorways. And he seems to...

EastEnders' series story producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed that the soap's team often draw on Greek tragedy when devising storylines. Speaking on a special Radio 4 arts programme called OedipusEnders, Treadwell-Collins named Ronnie Mitchell's (Samantha Womack) secret daughter plotline with Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace) as one plot which was heavily influenced by ancient legends. Treadwell-Collins explained: "Going back to the origins of storytelling - going back to Greek tragedy is a great way to start, and then of course take it in different directions. "I think the biggest story we've done in my time that reflects that is Ronnie's story with Danielle. We went back and made it Greek." The producer went on to describe the plot as a "variation" on the tale of the mythical Greek king Oedipus, who was unaware (more)...

EastEnders star Lacey Turner has predicted that viewers will see a permanent change in Stacey Branning following the loss of her husband Bradley. The actress's troubled character watched Bradley (Charlie Clements) fall to his death from the roof of the Queen Vic last month while he was being chased by police who were convinced he was Archie Mitchell's killer. In an interview with the Walford soap's official website, the 21-year-old was asked how she expects Stacey to cope with the bereavement in the long-term after already losing best friend Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace) last year. BBC soap EastEnders caused the most controversy this year when storyliners took the decision to kill off Ronnie Mitchell's (Samantha Womack) estranged daughter Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace). EastEnders' executive producer Diederick Santer still stands by his decision, though. He recently told Digital Spy: "I knew there would be a reaction to Danielle's death - I felt it when we storylined it, when I read the script, when I went on set on the day we filmed it and when I watched the cut. I perhaps didn't perceive that it would upset some people to the extent that it did, but I still believe it was (more)...

As the only remaining link to Danielle, Ronnie's previously toyed with the idea of meeting up with him and even attended a school reunion with Christian (John Partridge) in the hope that he would be there. When he failed to show, she subsequently turned up on his doorstep wishing to talk through their past. However, as one of his daughters answered the door, Ronnie bolted from the scene. EastEnders actor Larry Lamb has insisted that his Albert Square alter ego wants to change for the better and become a family man. The 65-year-old, who plays the menacing role of Archie Mitchell, returned to filming earlier this year for another stint with the BBC soap. On screen, Archie was banished from Walford in April by his nephew-come-stepson Phil (Steve McFadden) when his almost-perfect world began crumbling around him following his disastrous wedding day to Peggy (Barbara Windsor). Archie's deceit resulted in the death of his daughter Ronnie's (Samantha Womack) own daughter Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace). Last week, however, Archie made a shock return to Walford in the hope that Peggy would give him another chance and forgive him for his action. EastEnders caused widespread controversy last month when they killed off Lauren Crace's Danielle Jones just seconds after her birth mother Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Janus) had come to terms with connection. However, the soap's exec Diederick Santer proudly stood by the plot. Here, Diederick chats about Danielle's death, Sam's return, the show's 25th anniversary and more in our first interview of Producer Season 2009. Were you proud of Wedding Week?
"Completely proud of it. I was ecstatic with it. It's one of the best weeks of episodes that we've done in a long time. With the Whitney week that we did last year and the Max and Stacey reveal at Christmas 2007, it's one of the peaks of the last few years. EastEnders's villainous Archie Mitchell is to make his return to Albert Square in the summer. EastEnders executive Diederick Santer has explained that Danielle Jones's tragic death last week became an inevitable storyline move. Hundreds of fans were outraged following the demise of Danielle (Lauren Crace) only minutes after revealing to a devastated Ronnie (Samantha Janus) that she was her daughter. Speaking of the storyline twist, Santer told Inside Soap: "When we were devising the character, we knew this was one of the possible endings. And as we worked through the story, it became inevitable. "We loved Danielle and Ronnie together, but the magic is that they're forever out of reach for one another. If Danielle had left without Ronnie finding out who she was, it would have been irritating for the audience. The only way for the character to be permanently gone was to kill her."
