You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.
Her debut feature, All the Creatures Were Stirring, a Christmas horror anthology co-written and directed alongside her husband David Ian McKendry, might as well be called “Indie Horror: The Movie,” seeing...

One of my favorite parts of the Halloween season is listening to seasonal music, be it classics like “Grimm Grinning Ghosts” from Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride or familiar tracks from horror movies like Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Hell, I’ll even do deep cuts like Frank Vinci’s “Just What I’ve Been Looking For” from Sleepaway Camp or Gowan’s “Moonlight Desires,” most recently used in WolfCop. I’m lucky enough to have friends that make me Halloween mixes, too, giving me plenty to listen to all month long.
My new favorite Halloween album, though, is a little unconventional and a whole lot of fun. Sean Keller, a musician, actor, and screenwriter (Hulu’s All That We Destroy), has recorded the ultimate Halloween mix this year: The Killer Sounds of Halloween, 13 original songs from 13 fake bands.

For his third feature, writer/director Joe Begos heads into the blood-soaked realm of vampires with Bliss, his nightmarishly gritty exploration of the darker side of the creative process and what we’re willing to give up in order to “feed the beast”—so to speak.
Bliss is centered around Dezzy (Dora Madison), an up-and-coming artist living in Los Angeles that is having a rough go of it: she can’t pay her rent, she is suffering from a crippling case of painter’s block, and her agent has decided to dump her, leaving her feeling hopeless and desperately numb. Looking to forget her troubles, Dezzy sets out on a drug and alcohol-fueled bender with the help of her friend Courtney (Tru Collins) and Courtney’s eccentric boyfriend, Dante (Jesse Merlin), and the trio’s night of debauchery culminates in a very brutally intimate fashion.
But when she wakes up the next day,...

What do a re-animated deviant surgeon, cannibalistic serial killer, and a Max Von Sydow-inspired Catholic priest all have in common? They are all characters in musical plays inspired by horror films, and they are all played by the same classically trained opera singer, Jesse Merlin. I became a fan of Merlin when I saw him […]

Over the weekend, history was made in the live theatre world of Los Angeles, as Ben Rock and the legendary Stuart Gordon revived the stage play version of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s novel The Sirens of Titan for the Sacred Fools Theater. Gordon, who first tackled the darkly comedic sci-fi tale 40 years ago for Chicago’s Organic Theater, once again handled the screenplay adaptation for this new take on the classic story of a man who must lose everything to understand what life truly is all about. The result is a wildly entertaining exploration of what it means to be human, as well as a deeply moving experience that I enjoyed immensely.
After the premiere performance this past Friday, Daily Dead had the opportunity to chat with both Rock and Gordon (who are reteaming once again after a successful collaboration on Taste, a cannibal-themed dramatic production that also played at...

Filmmaker Stuart Gordon is well-known for adapting the works of H.P. Lovecraft, but four decades ago, he also helped bring Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s The Sirens of Titan to life on the stage, and La's Sacred Fools Theater Company will celebrate the adaptation's 40th anniversary by performing a new version of the play, updated by Gordon himself, to conclude their 20th season.
Press Release: In 1977, acclaimed writer/director Stuart Gordon adapted Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s classic novel for Chicago’s Organic Theater with the approval and input of the author himself. Now Sacred Fools will close its 20th season with the recently rediscovered adaptation, newly updated by Gordon and more timely than ever.

Who says you need to adapt? As some filmmakers look towards newfangled technology for 21st century chills (Friend Request/Unfriended/The Den), writer/director Jackson Stewart scares up some vintage nostalgia with his debut feature, Beyond The Gates. Screw Facebook and Skype. Remember the good old days when people sat around in social groups, and spooked themselves silly with products you’d only find in dumpsters nowadays?
For you younger readers, VHS cassettes used to play movies on film before digital radio waves made physical copies obsolete – but Stewart’s concept dates even myself (not in my 30s yet, so I was part of the DVD uprising). Apparently games used to exist in VHS form, and you could play along with the characters on screen (like Final Destination 3 tried to do with their “Select A Fate” DVD). Well, what if those games became reality, and immersion meant realistic consequences?...

The week I saw Fetish Factory, the new feature from writer/director Staci Layne Wilson, I also rewatched Anna Biller’s The Love Witch and Hillary Clinton lost her chance to be the first female president of the United States. I was very much in the mindset of seeing art through a specific prism of gender politics and sexism, which may have colored my reading of the movie. At the same time, I don’t know if that’s true. This is a movie with gender politics very much on its mind. You don’t make a movie about the male customers of a sex fetish club being turned into bloodthirsty zombies without wanting to say something about the relationship between men and women.

You've got to watch this trailer for a fun looking throwback horror thriller called Beyond the Gates. I wasn't really sure what to make of this film when I first started watching the trailer, and then it got to a point where the main characters start playing a VHS-type board game in which they have to play to save their missing father's soul. That's the concept that grabbed my attention, and I love the whole VHS throwback vibe of it. It looks like it will be an entertaining flick! You can read Ben's review of it here. This is the synopsis:
The movie stars Graham Skipper (Almost Human) and Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End) as "two estranged brothers who reunite to sift through the contents of their missing dad’s VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive Vcr board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished.

Vcr board games: they brought tabletop entertainment to a new, interactive level. In Beyond the Gates, though, two brothers discover a video board game that's a little too interactive, transferring them to another world where their dad's soul is on the line and a roll of the dice could lead to eternal torment. It has just been announced that Re-Animator: The Musical will return for new performances in Hollywood this October with new performers and brand new songs:
““Re-Animator ™ the Musical” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. Re-Animator the Musical has been re-animated, with new songs and new performers, just in time for Halloween. Stuart Gordon is back in the director's chair working from a book he co-penned with Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris. Mark Nutter provided the music and lyrics.
The blood-soaked musical enjoyed an original run in Los Angeles in 2011 (here's an event report I penned at the time). The new production will see Graham Skipper and Jesse Merlin reprise their roles at Herbert West and Dr. Hill, respectively.

It was a quick shoot for Fetish Factory, writer/director Staci Layne Wilson's feature debut, which features a post-apocalyptic atmosphere blended with burlesque bawdiness. While the film goes through post, we have several stills to share straight from the set.
“We are wrapped on Fetish Factory, my 5-day feature film wonder-shoot for the fab Bbp,” said Wilson. “What a way to make a directorial debut: pinup girls, multiple costume changes, burlesque acts, singers, bands, claustrophobic ‘haunted house’ horror with a big cast, zombies, beauty and F/X makeup, bloody death scenes, stunts, and humor -- I think my next movie should be about one character in a phone booth or something… Whew!”

Ever wondered what might happen if classic video game characters like Mario, Megaman and Link suddenly found themselves out of work? Series creators Jackson Stewart and William Rot explore that scenario in the hilarious short film The Cartridge Family: Battle for Employment, which premiered on the gaming site Screw Attack. The short, which you can watch in its entirety below, is the pilot for a planned sitcom about the lives of 8-bit video game characters who are magically released into the real world by an unwitting gamer. The cast includes many familiar genre names – including Almost Human co-stars Graham Skipper and Brian Gillespie as “Sergio” and “Twink,” with Curtiss Frisle (Acme Saturday Night) as “Roboman” and A.J. Bowen (You're Next) as the exasperated gamer who tries to acclimate his new pals to the real world... with hilariously violent results. There's even a Re-Animator connection: Barbara Crampton, star of the classic film,...

Following successful runs in L.A. and Chicago, the demented holiday musical revue Christmas Smackdown (a.k.a. The Christmas Suicide Hotel) is opening in New York City this weekend for two nights only. Co-written by Mark Nutter, writer/composer of the twisted hit Re-Animator: The Musical, it also marks a reunion for some of that show's co-stars: the multi-talented Jesse Merlin (Dr. Hill), who also recently performed in Exorcistic: The Rock Musical Parody Experiment and the H.P. Lovecraft rock opera Dreams in the Witch House, and co-writer Cynthia Carle (Dr. Harrod), a Broadway performer, recording artist and screenwriter (who also did the choreography for Re-Animator). They are joined by actress and comedienne Lyndsay Hailey, who has appeared in Love is Dead: A NecRomantic Musical Comedy and tours the Us in the improv musical The Deltones. Fans of legendary author H.P. Lovecraft know how closely the ideas of sound, music and strange vibrations are woven into his literary works – from the supernatural serenade called forth in "The Music of Erich Zann" to the sonic “resonator” that opens a dimensional portal in From Beyond. Many musicians have tapped into Lovecraft's tales for inspiration – sometimes purely for fun, as in the case of Re-Animator: The Musical, co-produced for the stage by another horror icon, Stuart Gordon. As you know, Gordon's long association with Lovecraft's work began in earnest with the 1985 classic Re-Animator, and includes a memorable episode of the Showtime series Masters of Horror: “Dreams in the Witch House.” That same tale, which Lovecraft penned in 1932, is now the basis of an epic rock opera produced in association with the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. While Gordon is not involved in this project, it does feature one...

The New York City premiere of The Exorcist took place 40 years ago this very night, and Orgasmico Theatre Company has marked the occasion by creating a hilarious, hard-rocking and fourth-wall-breaking musical comedy entitled Exorcistic: The Rock Musical Parody Experiment, which runs throughout this month as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Fans of Stuart Gordon's stage hit Re-Animator: The Musical are celebrating the return of actor Jesse Merlin, who played the diabolical Dr. Hill in that production and has a long history of horror-related stage roles, including Hannibal Lecter in Silence! The Musical. Along with all of the company members, Merlin plays multiple parts in Exorcistic, which not only lampoons The Exorcist and its iconic scenes and dialogue, but manages to poke fun at the whole concept of musical horror parodies themselves, layering one meta-joke on top of another, all the while toying with the idea of the original film's production being “cursed,...

Generally, I am not a fan of musicals, on film or stage. Those that I do enjoy rely on farce and/or transgressive themes to keep me entertained. With the recent surge in “horror movies turned musicals,” (i.e. Evil Dead and Re-Animator) the fear is that they will lose their transgressive-ness and novelty. There is no worry of that with Silence! The Musical.
Silence! The Musical is the song-and-dance version of Silence of the Lambs. Following the 1991 film very closely, the play sees FBI trainee Clarice Starling brought in to work with cannibalistic sociopath, Dr. Hannibal Lecter in tracking down psychopath-at-large Buffalo Bill. Sounds like the perfect setting for hilarity, doesn’t it? Well it is. Christine Lakin’s Clarice is dead-on, mastering Jodie Foster’s slurred drawl and wide-eyed faux-naiveté. It would have been funny had it not been so true. Davis Gaines’s Hannibal Lecter has a...

A few years back, film director Stuart Gordon had the thought that his gore-filled 1985 horror movie Re-Animator might be improved with the addition of some songs. It was an odd idea — but an ultimately successful one. There is a place where Horror lovers can go and feel like they're part of something. A wonderfully twisted family. A place where, finally, they're not the outcasts with weird tastes and they're not the freaks for loving gore. The people outside these walls who don't have the stomach to see someone's eye plucked out of their head are the freaks here. That place is Creation Entertainment's Weekend Of Horrors.
This year's Mecca of Horror was at the Marriot at the Los Angeles Airport. All the little gore hounds flocked to multiple rooms of entertainment and spectacle like the Theater Room that featured many legendary Horror actors, actresses and filmmakers in discussion panels and Q&A's like the great John Carpenter, Tom Savini and Asia Argento as well as reunions of the cast and crew of such classic films as Demons and Nightmare on Elm Street.
