I always think I like eating at buffets. Why can’t I have some chicken wings with some sushi? Why can’t I have rice on my pizza? Then I remember I’m not ten anymore.
I know better than this. Despite what I think sounds good after a bottle of wine, these are not the choices I should be making. This leads me to hope that’s what happened to the makers of The Shrine. They are either ten or drunk.
Director Jon Knautz (who is also a co-writer on the film along with Brendan Moore and Trevor Matthews) is really trying. The problem is, he’s trying to make three films rolled into one for no discernable reason or purpose. It begins with an ambitious reporter (aren’t they always?) Carmen (Cindy Sampson) is arguing with her editor to let her cover a story about an American tourist...

The Shrine - Still - CrucifixionYou really have to respect a village for sticking with Paganism 1400 years after variations of this religion have basically gone out of fashion. Paganism is a blanket term used to cover many Eastern European before the emergence of Christianity. Paganism is one of the themes within director Jon Knautz's (Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer) Canadian horror film The Shrine, which will have a World Premiere at Montreal's Fantasia July 25th. The film will have one showing at the film festival and The Shrine, unsurprisingly, shows a "pagan-looking shrine," (Fantasia) where the Polish locals hold Pagan rites for mysterious demons. The trailer for the film is fantastic and the clip shows more of the religious rites performed by these ancient worshipers, below.
The synopsis for The Shrine here:

If you—like so many horror fans—were pleasantly surprised at just how cheeky and energetically messy last year’s Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer was, you’ve probably been wondering when the lads behind that creature-filled Canadian flick would strike again. Well, gentle readers, wonder no more: The Brookstreet Pictures team of Jon Knautz, Trevor Matthews and Matt Brulotte are in the thick of production on their follow-up shocker, The Shrine. They passed on a few exclusive bloody detail photos, which you can see below.
The Shrine treads darker terrain than the relatively lighthearted Jack Brooks, telling the tale of a group of journalists running afoul of a homicidal cult and the blood-hungry beast they worship in a small, decidedly sinister Polish village. Aaron Ashmore (twin brother of X-men’s Shawn Ashmore, from Smallville and the upcoming The Thaw) takes the lead, and once again Knautz takes the scripting (with Brendan Moore) and directing duties,...

Canadian director Jon Knautz burst into international view with Jack Brooks Monster Slayer and with that film’s release still fresh the entire team behind Jack Brooks is already hard at work on their sophomore feature, the much more serious-minded The Shrine. I had the chance to visit the set earlier this week and though it was just Day Two of the shoot they were already hard at it, shooting in a large scale underground temple set. Nothing like getting the blood out of the way early ...
After a young American backpacker goes missing in Europe, three journalists link his disappearance to a remote Polish village called Alvaina. Upon further investigation, the journalists discover that Alvaina has a history of bizarre cult activity revolving around human sacrifice. Hell bent on discovering the truth, they travel to the small village, but quickly find themselves pursued by a mysterious group set on killing them.

This is why I’m not a betting man. Speculation in the aftermath of Canuck creature feature Jack Brooks Monster Slayer was that the creative forces behind that film would return quickly to the same well to create a sequel, speculation reinforced by Brooks’ sequel friendly ending and by comments made by the stars and director when the film was on the fest circuit. Well, all that speculation was wrong. The core creative team behind Jack Brooks starts production on their next feature next week and Jack Brooks 2 it aint, instead what we’re getting is what appears to be a far more serious horror picture titled The Shrine.
