[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Magicians” episode “Six Short Stories About Magic.”]
As with many of Marlee Matlin’s gigs on TV, her role as Harriet on “The Magicians” wasn’t written with a deaf actress in mind. But once she landed the job, the show adjusted to reflect her unique qualities, such as incorporating more of her dry humor into the dialogue. On Wednesday’s episode, however, her deafness was the inspiration for a full storyline told from her point of view, complete with the audio tweaked to approximate for viewers her more limited hearing.
In “Six Short Stories About Magic,” which was written by series co-creator Sera Gamble and David Reed, it’s revealed that Harriet is the grown daughter of the Neitherworld Librarian, Zelda (Mageina Tovah). While her mother is content to work in the confines of the temporally slow library, safeguarding all the magical tomes, Harriet had always sought adventure in the outside world,...

The Magicians just aired its most spellbindingly bizarre moment of all time!
In tonight's all-new episode of the smash Syfy drama, our high king and queen of Fillory opted for a more musical battle cry ahead of their royal war -- and Et has the exclusive behind-the-scenes scoop from star Hale Appleman on how they pulled it all off!
Appleman confessed that he knew a musical number was coming to The Magicians "at some point," but he was not expecting to burst into a rendition of Les Miserables' "One Day More."
"It totally blew my mind because I had done Les Mis when I was a kid in high school and I played Javert but [The Magicians showrunner John McNamera] didn’t know that when they wrote that [episode] so it was super strange," the 31-year-old actor confessed, adding that he was "equal parts terrified and excited" for the challenge.

"That was fun!" Star Hale Appleman recently dished to Et of the adrenealine-pumping action scene. "I got two weeks of sword training which is not a lot, but I did what I could with the time that I had."

"I think I did okay," the actor added modestly. "You learn so much and your body changes because you have to handle it in a totally different way, so I would love to do a lot more of that. I hope that they let me swashbuckler as much as possible."

Penny’s trip to the limbo-like world of the Neitherlands in Monday’s The Magicians (Syfy, 9/8c) may leave him wishing he was back in hellish Fillory.

Given the dangers of his new surroundings, Penny’s main objective is “trying to find his way home — quite literally,” his portrayer Arjun Gupta previews. With no allies by his side and no clear way back to Brakebills, he is forced accept “the most terrifying option, which is to rely on Quentin for help.”
Here, Gupta talks about the Neitherlands’ “not-so-nice” residents — Penny may come in peace,...

Spoofaway Camp: Strauss-Schulson’s Playful Mash-up Takes a Tumble On You
Director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose last feature was A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) returns with The Final Girls, an entertaining surprise of sorts as a playful riff on early 80s slasher tropes as it borrows the cosmic charms at play in classic titles like Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo (1984) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).
With a talented young cast and plenty of boisterous energy, Strauss-Schulson manages to instill a thread of sentimentality in this generally comedic feature, and ironically makes us care more for its characters than the films it pays homage to actually manage. Those looking for genre thrills will most likely be disappointed, and its eventual outcome is a bit too hoary despite its enjoyable cuteness from screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (the team who wrote Rose McGowan’s 2014 short film Dawn,...
