Tamil superstar Chiyaan Vikram is donning his most brutally savage, and barbaric look in the teaser for his upcoming film ‘Thangalaan’. Vikram essays a tribal fighter who only looks out for his own people. Vikram’s tribe is unwelcoming to foreigners and will spill blood if they detect even an ounce of threat.
The teaser shows that the film will have a rather bleak, dark, and morose tone and opens with the words: “As myth leads to history, as greed leads to destruction, as blood wars lead to liberty, rises the son of gold.”
Set during the time of British India, ‘Thanglaan’ centres on the Kolar Gold Fields and the British trying to mine the gold by uprooting the tribe. Vikram, who is most likely either the tribe’s leader or one of its most ferocious fighters is shown to be almost animalistic.

CinemaIn ‘Natchathiram Nagargiradhu’, Pa Ranjith has shredded the plot and characters of ‘Minsara Kanavu’ to derive a more assertive narrative about love.It has been one year since Natchathiram Nagargiradhu released in cinemas worldwide. While some have enthusiastically appreciated Pa Ranjith’s attempt at addressing a range of contemporary socio-political topics, others have called it an experiment gone sour. Most commentators, however, agree that this movie saw the filmmaker flexing a novel story-telling muscle to communicate abstract yet progressive ideas. In the groundbreaking BBC docu series Ways of Seeing (1972), Marxist art critic John Berger says, “Remember that I am controlling and using for my own purposes the means of reproduction needed for these programmes … As with all programmes,...

Those following Rajini and his choice of scripts and directors can feel his dilemma in charting a future course for himself considering his age,...

The term ‘pan India film’ is quite the rage across the country these days and four leading producers convened at the recently concluded Dakshin South India Media and Entertainment Summit in Chennai to break down the concept.
Organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (Cii), southern region, the theme of the conference this year was Beyond Borders and the pan India discussion fell neatly into that remit.
In recent decades, India has been a patchwork of local cinema markets, defined partly by geography and language group, and with only limited overlap or transfer between them, except for the Bollywood (Hindi-language) segment which enjoys wider releases. Change may now be afoot.
Pan India film is a term usually used for films made in one of the four south Indian languages – Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam – which is dubbed into Hindi and other languages and released across India and in diaspora markets.

Even in his latest film Natchathiram Nagargiradhu, which was released in the theatres in August and is now available for digital streaming, Ranjith — a pioneer in introducing the Dalit framework to Tamil cinema — attempts to approach a progressive plot premised on a Puducherry-based liberal arts theatre group with his signature anti-caste aesthetic. OpinionWith Rene, Ranjith has reversed the gaze of popular culture’s ‘submissive good girl’ heroine. Played brilliantly by Dushara Vijayan, Rene is self-assured, empathetic, knows her politics and acts on it too.Jyoti NishaTwitterWho gets love in popular culture? I have been thinking about that question for a decade now. Last Friday, I watched a film that surprised me in ways I had never imagined. Pa Ranjith’s latest film, Natchathiram Nagargiradhu, which translates to ‘a star shoots across’, seems to answer all our questions about the idea of contemporary love. Trust me, there is an interpretation for everyone – inter-caste, inter-faith, queer love, inclusivity, sexuality, woman as a category, genderless casteless love. The way Ranjith sees urban Indian society is refreshing, authentic and political. He embodies the power of a conversation into one of the finest scenes in Indian cinema. Theatre director Subeer (Regin Rose) wants to put together a play on love.
