New York City is usually a great trip — but maybe not if you’re also living in a post-apocalyptic world and fighting off undead walkers. In the latest The Walking Dead spinoff, Dead City, two unlikely familiar faces — Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) — end up in the Big Apple together but, don’t worry, these two haven’t suddenly buried the hatchet in a feud that began when Negan brutally killed Maggie’s husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) years ago. “I think there may be some shared purpose or mutual benefit,” Cohan told TV Insider’s Jim Halterman when she, Morgan, and co-star Gaius Charles stopped by our press room at January’s Television Critics Association press tour. Maggie’s purpose at the start of the six-episode series, which begins a few years after the events of the original Walking Dead series (which ended earlier in November 2022) is...

If you thought the first season of Apple TV+ musical comedy Schmigadoon! was a spectacle, then, to quote a showbiz phrase, “you ain’t seen nothing yet!” But Season 2 isn’t taking the same bright and sunny approach it did with its first, which saw troubled married couple Josh Skinner (Keegan-Michael Key) and Melissa Gimble (Cecily Strong) dropped into a fantasy world filled with lavish musical numbers and a who’s who of musical theater’s finest like Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Alan Cumming, and a pre-Oscar winning Ariana DeBose, to name a few. In the new episodes, Josh and Melissa are back in the real world, looking for more from their lives… the kind of more that comes with another visit to Schmigadoon! However, as Key told our Jim Halterman when he and his co-star, Dove Cameron, stopped by our studio at the Television Critics Association winter press tour,...

It’s nearly impossible to think of ABC‘s daytime drama General Hospital without thinking of Genie Francis. The Emmy winner joined the soap in 1977 as a teenager and by 1981, when her character married Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary), she was a household name. Now, that ingenue is in the past and Laura Spencer is a formidable presence in Port Charles — in addition to being the city’s mayor, she’s also embroiled in the storyline surrounding her grandson, Spencer (Nicholas Chavez), and his desire to gain custody of his infant baby brother, born to his ex-girlfriend Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl). Ahead of General Hospital celebrating 60 years on the air on April 1, our Jim Halterman caught up with Francis to discuss her daytime television journey and why she thinks the drama will endure for years to come. What do you make of General Hospital in 2023, given your history with the show and where things are heading?...

Now that Magnum P.I. is surfing its way from CBS (where it was canceled last year) to its new home at NBC, longtime viewers can rest assured they’re in for plenty more of what they love from the crime drama — and then some. “It’s definitely a little steamier this year purely by value of the two characters getting together and embarking on a new territory and unexplored lands,” says Perdita Weeks, who plays former MI6-operative Juliet Higgins. Higgins has been paired with private investigator Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) for a while now but this season shows them having finally taken the leap into a romance with each other. At Hernandez’s urging in the in-person interview held during last month’s Television Critics Association press tour with TV Guide Magazine’s Jim Halterman (for the cover story that’s in stores now), Weeks can’t help...

Fire Country has been so hot for CBS that it’s already been renewed for a second season and has scored the prime spot after the AFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 29. And sparks are going to continue to fly, stars Max Thieriot (who plays Bode and also serves as an executive producer), Jordan Calloway (Jake), and Stephanie Arcila (Gabriela) promised when they sat down with TV Insider’s Jim Halterman. While Jake isn’t just going to step aside without “a little bit of a fight” after his and Gabriela’s relationship ended due to her feelings for Bode, Calloway notes how meaningful the relationship between the two men is. (They’re slowly reconnecting after an estrangement following Bode’s sister’s death; Jake had broken up with her that night.) Bode “is his best friend, his brother, and so that’s going to be more of a harder pill for him to swallow,...

As we approach 2023, we also near the premiere of Disney Channel’s upcoming buzzed-about animated series Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Ahead of the show’s debut, some of the voice stars and producers stopped by the dropped by the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine studio at New York Comic Con to tease what fans can expect from the comic book-inspired show. Sitting down with Jim Halterman, stars Diamond White, Fred Tatasciore, and Gary Anthony Williams joined producers Steve Loter, Rodney Clouden, and Pilar Flynn for a conversation. Based on the hit comic books, Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette (White) and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur (Tatasciore). What We Do in the Shadows may be a silly show about vampire roommates living on Staten Island, but the FX comedy also has a lot of heart that star Harvey Guillén is looking back on in a recent chat with TV Guide Magazine and TV Insider’s Jim Halterman at New York Comic-Con. The actor who plays human familiar Guillermo de la Cruz in the mockumentary-style series left fans with a major cliffhanger as he sought out becoming a vampire by means of money, bribing friend and vampire Derek (Chris Sandiford) to bite him. Will he carry through with the endeavor? (Credit: Russ Martin/FX) Fans won’t know until Season 5, but Guillén is taking time to reflect on what Guillermo’s accomplished onscreen and how it relates to his experience with the character’s story behind the scenes. “It’s so nice to be able to play a character that has those layers,...

Flighty, fabulous, and “magical.” That’s what Marlo Thomas says to expect of her matriarch, Vivian, in Hallmark‘s upcoming A Magical Christmas Village. In the holiday flick, premiering November 4 on The Hallmark Channel, Thomas and Alison Sweeney co-star as a mother-daughter duo who couldn’t be more different. Sweeney’s Summer is also a mother to a daughter who takes after grandma more than anyone else. After a breakup, Vivian moves in with her daughter and granddaughter and immediately sets up a miniature Christmas village. The holidays take an expected turn when, as Chloe (Maesa Nicholson) begins setting up the village’s figurines, real-life events appear to mimic the scenes she creates. Vivian is a firm believer in magic, and “that’s the part that I love about her,” Thomas tells TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s Jim Halterman. “She has a daughter who doesn’t believe in...

Where do things stand when we resume the action, with two years having passed in the world of the show? “The last thing we saw of Michaela was Jared telling her that he thought Zeke could be dead,” Roxburgh recounts to our Jim Halterman during their stop at our New York Comic Con press room. “Oops, that did not happen — so then, two-and-a-half years later, Ben (Josh Dallas) is kind of a wreck, and so Michaela’s kind of been tasked with taking his ...

Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) cannot seem to avoid getting himself into tight spots. Of course, when the Dexter: New Blood revival began, he’d been living a few idyllic years in Iron Lake, NY (under the name Jim Lindsay) and not killing. But when we caught up with him for the first time since the Showtime drama’s 2013 series finale, he quickly has his first kill in nearly a decade and is reunited with his now-teenaged son Harrison (Jack Alcott) and things have been escalating ever since. For Hall, stepping back into the shoes of the well-intentioned serial killer wasn’t a huge challenge for him. “I think the fact that the writers were able to hit that target, that honored our desire to do something new but also honored something fundamental about the show’s DNA and the character,” he told TV Insider’s Jim Halterman. “I discovered he was still there.

Bring on the candy, scares, and spirit that make Halloween so much fun on Monday’s episode of the CBS comedy The Neighborhood. The November 1 installment digs into a common question that Tina Butler (Tichina Arnold) and neighbor Gemma Johnson (Beth Behrs) confront head-on in the episode. “Our characters get into the ‘am I too old for sexy Halloween?’ debate,” details Behr. As Behr and Arnold tell TV Insider’s Jim Halterman, despite the extra time the episode took to shoot given additional set decorations and costumes for the cast, the actors didn’t let that spoil their good time. “What was fun, though, is that we were together as a cast,” says Arnold, who also teases how Cedric the Entertainer‘s Calvin reacts to his wife’s revealing get-up for the holiday. This episode may keep things light, but getting into the heavier and more dramatic subject matter is foundational to the comedy.

“I do think [today] our original premise probably would have been blasted out before the show even aired,” he said. “It was a challenging premise. We all knew it would get attention.”
In his appearance on the panel alongside Covington, actor Michael J. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast: (l-r) Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Andre Braugher,
Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Terry Crews and Chelsea Peretti.
The new Fox sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine could’ve been your stereotypical workplace comedy relying on predictable romances with a cheeky lead taking the best lines and putting everyone else in the shadows.
Thankfully, the series, created by Dan Goor and Michael Schurr (who also created NBC’s Parks And Recreation), is off to a good start by creating an ensemble work comedy led by Saturday Night Live vet Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta. The rest of the stellar cast includes Stephanie Beatriz (the tough-as-nails Diaz), Terry Crews (muscley squad leader with a big heart, Terry), Melissa Fumero (competitive Santiago), Chelsea Peretti (the sardonic Gina), Joe Lo Truglio (heart on his sleeve Boyle) and Andre Braugher as Captain Raymond Holt. Holt casually revealed in the pilot episode that he...

Black Canary’s ex-coworkers come to give her her severance package. And another major DC bad guy comes into the story.
Before I get to tonight’s episode, I wanted to mention that Tbl’s esteemed entertainment editor, Jim Halterman, did a round table discussion on how Arrow is doing so far. He invited some of the finest critics of the land and even let me join in. So, if you want to debate the highs and lows of S2 so far, have a look see.
Sooo…. The show picks up with a flashback, and it’s kind of clever. Because it seems at first just more of the reshooting of Sara’s scenes on the Queen’s Gambit before it sank, but it’s actually about her, and not Oliver. It’s the point where their paths diverged—the first time. And while it’s interesting to see how the little betrayer survived,...

Here at TheBacklot.com we spend a lot of time celebrating gay and bi men in the spotlight: actors, singers, dancers, sportsmen, and personalities are splashed across our pages like so much red paint at an all-fur fashion show. While we will never tire of the Neil Patrick Harrises and Chris Colfers of the world, we thought it was high time we paid due credit to some of the more unsung gay heroes: the guys behind the cameras of some of television’s best shows. In that light, we are proud to unveil TheBacklot 40, our celebration of 40 of the hardest-working and most influential out men working behind the scenes in TV.
These are the men who create and run some of our favorite shows, have written some of our most beloved gay characters, and have shepherded gay-inclusive stories to screen long before it was fashionable. Some will be familiar, but...

Can Sean Saves The World take the gay sitcom torch and run with it?
Oh, the gay sitcom.
It’s a spectacular and welcome feat that we now live in a time when there are a plethora of gay characters on television but, also, we now have series centered around gay characters. Sure, we’re still stinging after the failures of last seasons’ excellent The New Normal and disappointing Partners, but this fall we’ve been given a new chance to have a successful gay series in Sean Saves The World.
In the NBC sitcom, Sean Hayes plays a single gay man taking on the full-time parenting role with his teenager daughter, Ellie (Samantha Isler) and learning how to juggle home, his demanding job with a new boss (Thomas Lennon) and a meddlesome mother (the wonderful Linda Lavin). Echo Kullum plays a co-worker at Sean’s job while Megan Hilty...

Tvgn is on a roll with its Where Are They Now specials - and the latest installment airs tonight when we catch up with the cast of one of the most successful sitcoms of all time: Frasier.

Some are hits (hello, Sleepy Hollow!) , some are wild misses (farewell, We Are Men), but almost all have aired at this point.
So about one month into the fall season, we asked TV Fanatic staff members one very simple question: What is the best new series of 2013-2014? Scroll down for their responses and then vote for your own below...
Miranda Wicker: Since Almost Human hasn't technically aired yet, I'll go with The Originals. It's given new life to old characters.
Michelle Carlbert: Has to be Sleepy Hollow. I can't remember the last time I fell in love with a show so instantaneously. The premise is what drew me in initially (I love anything spooky), but the chemistry between the two leads is what really cemented it for me in the end.
Christine Orlando: I'll go with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. I love the way it takes stories...

Jesse Pinkman has cooked his last batch, Todd has complimented Lydia's blouse for the last time and, of course, Walter White has taken his last breath.
Breaking Bad concluded its epic run on Sunday night with "Felina," a relatively slow and simple episode of what many believe to be the best show in television history.
Is that what our Round Table panelists of Matt Richenthal, Jim Halterman, Sean McKenna, Dan Forcella and Steve Marsi believe? They put Breaking Bad in its place and sound off on the finale below...
----------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the finale?
Matt: The close-up of Jesse's face as he sped away from Uncle Jack's compound. It was the perfect mixture of joy, shock and relief.
Jim: While I loved the big bullet-fest, I adored that last scene with Skylar and Walt. We knew it was their goodbye and I respect that the writers didn't have them reconcile.

It's nice to know Vince Gilligan isn't a liar, isn't it?
The Breaking Bad creator told TV Fanatic that "Ozymandias" was the best episode the show has ever done and, after viewing the intense craziness of last night's installment, would anyone care to argue that point?
Below, TV Fanatic staffers Matt Richenthal, Dan Forcella, Sean McKenna, Jim Halterman and Steve Marsi tackle the amazing episode, bidding farewell to Hank and wondering whether we'll bid farewell to Walt before all is said and done in just two weeks...
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: Walt's phone call to Skyler, with the police listening in. With respect to Chris Traeger, that was LITCHerally the best I've ever seen from Bryan Cranston, which is obviously saying a ridiculous amount. The combination of (fake) rage with (real) tears from Walt was simply astounding.
Dan: How am I supposed to choose?...

The beginning of the end got underway for Breaking Bad last night, as "Blood Money" took viewers into the disturbing future of Walter White and then settled on his suddenly unsettled present.
Yes, Hank now knows the truth about Walt. And Walt knows Hank knows. And, in a scene we'll be talking about for years to come, Hank knows Walt knows that he knows... and no one has any clue what will happen from here.
But Round Table panelists Matt Richenthal, Dan Forcella, Steve Marsi and Jim Halterman will at least take a few guesses, as they convene below and debate the best scenes, best car wash names and more from one of the final episodes of one of television's best-ever shows.

Nominations for the 2013 Emmy Awards are in and, along with them, the usual outrage over those left off the list.

With the chart-topping ranks the men of Teen Wolf found themselves at in this year’s Hot 100 readers’ poll, it’s obvious that Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, Daniel Sharman and Keahu Kahuanui are favorites.
But how is the actual show doing?
The MTV werewolf drama kicked off season 3 recently, so we gathered a few critics together to talk about the creative strength of the show, how the new cast additions (Charlie and Max Carver) are doing and who we’d like to see more of.
Making up this Roundtable is Damian Holbrook (Senior Writer, TV Guide Magazine), Heather Hogan (Senior Editor, AfterEllen.com), Andy Swift (Senior Entertainment Editor, HollywoodLife.com) and our own Entertainment Reporter, Jim Halterman.
Is this the kind of puppy love that is better suited for Scott (Tyler Posey)?
The show has pulled back on the Scott/Allison love story considerably compared to earlier seasons.

It's been exactly nine months since the last time I was able to write about how great of a television show Wilfred is.
In my review of the Wilfred Season 2 finale, I called the show hilarious, heart-warming, depressing, and thought-provoking. Last summer the show took a leap in quality, elevating it to not only one of the best comedies on TV, but one of the best series period.
After watching two episodes of Wilfred Season 3, that fact has not changed.
The hour of "Uncertainty" and "Comfort" worked as a tremendous reminder of why Wilfred is like nothing else on television. It has the look and feel of a major motion picture, it racks the viewer's brain week after week with questions of what it's all about akin to Lost or Fringe, and it cracks you up throughout like some of the best comedies of all time.

Meet new bad boys Aiden (Max Carver, l) and Ethan (Charlie Carver, r)
That howling you hear? Werewolves from your television set. Or it could also be fans of Teen Wolf howling for the hot guys of Beacon Hills. Either way it’s a sign that MTV’s hit supernatural drama is back for a third season.
Four months have passed in the world of Teen Wolf, and while troublemaker Jackson will no longer be around (actor Colton Haynes left for the CW’s Arrow) there’s a new pack of Alphas to stir things up and make life hard for Scott, Stiles, Derek, Danny, Isaac and the rest of the gang.
The man behind Teen Wolf, out creator Jeff Davis, was clearly excited about fans seeing the new season when we talked last week. He shared details about what we can expect.
TheBacklot: Scott (Tyler Posey) continues to evolve.

WonderCon 2013, which took place this past weekend in Anaheim, California, may be smaller in scale than the summer geekfest of Comic Con, but it still manages to attract celebrities from the hottest movies and television shows.
On the TV front, I had the honor of being asked by the fine folks at MTV to moderate the Teen Wolf panel. During the hour-long Q&A, Jeff Davis and stars Tyler Posey and Dylan O’Brien talked about what’s to come in the much-anticipated third season (which premieres June 3rd on MTV).
Besides the presence of the new pack of Alphas that will keep Scott, Stiles, Derek (Tyler Hoechlin), Allison (Crystal Reed) and Lydia (Holland Roden) on their toes, there will be new characters (two of whom will be played by twins Charlie Carver and Max Carver) and more romantic complications our Teen Wolf characters.
Speaking of romance, I had...
