In Nia DaCosta‘s Candyman, Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) undergoes a gruesome and startling transformation when bitten by a bee in Cabrini-Green. The urban legend of Candyman rises once again, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Special Makeup Effects Designer J. Anthony Kosar (Lovecraft Country, Fargo tv series) and his team were responsible for bringing multiple iterations of […]...

“You can really make the story your own. But some of the specifics should be consistent.” So says William Burke (Colman Domingo), the aging keeper of the Candyman legend. And so say writer-director Nia DaCosta (“Little Woods”) and co-writers Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld (“The Twilight Zone”), the inventive re-creators of the “Candyman” franchise.
The filmmakers built their movie by deconstructing another one: Bernard Rose’s 1992 original, which was in turn based on Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden.” Though it was embraced by genre fans at the time (including a teenage Peele), Rose’s version is long overdue for a contemporary revision. It’s hard to imagine one with more searing impact than this.
The pandemic pushed the movie’s release date back a year, so the story opens in 2019 Chicago, long after the Cabrini-Green housing project of the original was razed to make way for gentrification.

The seventh season of Syfy's "Face Off" ended with an epic choreographed battle between knight characters created by the final three makeup artists. Judge Neville Page said, "This is like Game of Thrones." If only! Yes, the battle was fun, and the characters who were battling were mostly creative, well-constructed, and had details that made them look like they each belonged in the world of a fantasy film or TV show. But where "Game of Thrones"--which also debuted in 2011, just like "Face Off"--has changed and evolved over time, "Face Off" has not, even though it has aired more seasons. It is, of course, unfair to compare two totally different series in different genres. But let's look at other reality TV competitions between talented artists. All those that have survived past a few seasons (oh, "Work of Art," where did you go?) have all managed to retain their core...

We told you over the weekend that horror photog Joshua Hoffine has joined Mezco's Living Dead Dolls art book project, and now we have a look at some work he did recently for Sony UK featuring a monster of a prom!
Hoffine has created some incredibly chilling works throughout his career, but we all need a little levity in our dark world of nightmares now and then, which is what Hoffine provided for Sony UK to show off their new full-frame Sony A7 camera.
Taking a step back from the blood and terrors of his usual works, Hoffine got a little cute on this one and decided to do a photo shoot that featured three iconic monsters of horror… at their prom! Hoffine teamed with frequent collaborator "Face/Off" champion J. Anthony Kosar, and together they brought the idea to life.

As horror photographers go, Joshua Hoffine might very well be the best there is. His intricate sets and chilling imagery have made for a slew of amazing shots. But he’s got another idea in mind, a short film entitled Black Lullaby.
Fans of Hoffine are certainly familiar with his recurring theme of a child meeting some type of monster or boogeyman. Take a look at his work below if you haven’t seen it yet, and we’re sure you’ll be blown away. Hoffine is now imagining putting together a show with six of his nightmarish prints hanging on the left side of the room, six on the right, and Black Lullaby playing on a loop in the middle. Awesome.
Hoffine stated, “I've been living with this film for years, dreaming of the day when I would finally see it finished. My photographs are effective, but contained. This film pounces on the viewer.

Much-missed Vampire Diaries vet Matt Davis has a new role. TVLine reports that Davis is getting a recurring role on CSI as someone “with the soul of a poet and the mind of a mathematician” and the looks of Matt Davis. Somebody find me my swooning couch.

G4 lives! Sort of. It turns out the gaming channel won’t go away when The Esquire Network debuts. Instead, The Style Channel will disappear, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. Style was deemed redundant with Bravo, E! and Oxygen and is also available in more homes. Too bad they didn’t make this decision before cancelling a solid show like X-Play. Unfortunately, there are no plans to develop new programming for G4.
Tina Fey will host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live followed by Miley Cyrus and Bruce Willis. I hope we can get a sketch about how...

Nobody does horror photography quite like the one and only Joshua Hoffine. So when we heard he released a new pic featuring a zombie attack, we had to share it with our beloved Dreadies as soon as possible!
The photo is entitled Last Stand, and it depicts exactly that, a family's final moments as their home is swarmed by an undead horde. The father in the picture is played by none other than Phantasm star A. Michael Baldwin. The picture is below with some of the details highlighted. Simply put, Hoffine scores again! Huzzah!
The cast includes Baldwin, Erica Kauffman, Sade Hoffine and Rev Mercader. The zombies were played by Bob Barber, Colin Mogg, Sonny Williams, Jen Hoffine. Brian Wendling, Davis DeRock, Henry Feltmeyer, Alice Pollack, Nathan Beggs, Dylan Thomas, Brett Johnson and Austin Goldberg. Make-up was done by "Face/Off" winner J. Anthony Kosar and "Face/Off" alum Meagan Hester with Jeffrey Sisson,...

We all watched the uber-talented J. Anthony Kosar take the "Face/Off" Season 4 title a few days ago. And as much as we admire Kosar's work, there was another contestant that we also loved to watch.
Eric Fox, "Face/Off's" colorful 'Eric F.', sat down with us to talk about the show, art and horror.
Fox got voted off just one episode before the finale, but his flamboyant look, infectious laugh and outstanding artwork made 'Eric F.' one of the most memorable contestants to ever participate in the show. Fox had nothing but positive things to say about the Syfy show and his experiences on it.
"The fanbase is incredible," Fox said. "I get emails from parents and little kids saying how I've inspired them. Kids that have slightly alternative appearances and get ridiculed for how they look walk around with a little more self-confidence knowing if I...

At one time or another we've all checked out a Harlem Shake video on YouTube. I enjoyed the Miami Heat's version, and the "Duck Dynasty" guys had a good one too.
But Joshua Hoffine's Last Stand photo shoot has produced the best one yet.
"The big photo-shoot took place on March 6 with my lead actor A. Michael Baldwin (Phantasm) and lasted for an exhausting 17 hours," Hoffine said. "Most of the time was spent on zombie make-up, led by the wonderful J. Anthony Kosar."
You can check out all of Hoffine's previous work, as well as pre-order Last Stand at a special discounted price for a limited time by visiting JoshuaHoffine.com. Also, 'like' Joshua Hoffine on Facebook and follow Joshua Hoffine on Twitter (@joshuahoffine2).
Hoffine is a brilliantly talented photographer, and we look forward to sharing Last Stand with you Dreadies as soon as it's released. Stay tuned!

Fango got an update and new exclusive photo of the Toby demon from Marc Selz’s devil-cult flick Satanic Panic, which we last told you about here. Check out the pic below. “The film is currently shopping distribution,” Selz tells us. “We have it out with a number of companies that we are waiting to hear back from, and we are hoping to get something going soon.
“The straight-to-dvd horror market is really tough right now,” he continues, “and hopefully Satanic Panic will find a label and an audience. We are also currently working on a new full trailer that should be done at the end of July.”
Meanwhile, the Zagone Studios mask, designed by J. Anthony Kosar and fashioned after the film’s creature has begun rolling off the assembly line (pictured above), and Selz sent along links to a whole bunch of places you can grab one:
