Imphal, July 18 (Ians) Star Indian weightlifter and Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
In a video message, the 27-year-old Olympian said that due to the ethnic conflict in Manipur, many sports persons could not participate in the training camps and children’s studies are also being largely disturbed.
“Huge number of people lost their lives. Houses of many people were burnt. I also have homes in Manipur. Now I am not in the state. I am now in the USA, preparing myself for the World Championship and Asian Games,” she said.
The ace athlete, who was earlier appointed by the Manipur government as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sports, after her performance at the Tokyo Olympics, said that though she is not now in Manipur, but closely observing the everyday affairs of the state.

Hong Kong, July 15 (Ians) Olivia Devi Huidrom won a gold medal in the women’s 44kg as India won four medals on the second day of the Hong Kong Cadet Asia Cup judo competition in Hong Kong on Saturday.
In the final, Olivia defeated Ochirtuya Sandagdorj of Mongolia to win the gold medal.
Olivia, who is set to participate in the Macau Cadet Asian Cup 2023 next, won Pool D in the women’s 44kg class. In the semifinal, she defeated Chinese Taipei’s Jia Zhang.
Tops Athlete Linthoi Chanambam, World Cadets Championships gold medallist, had to be satisfied with a silver medal in the 63kg. Chanambam won Pool A by beating Ching Tung Suzuki Lin of Hong Kong.

Jinju (South Korea), May 5 (Ians) Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu finished sixth in the 49kg weight category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships, here on Friday.
Chanu, who has a personal best of 88kg (snatch) and 119kg (clean and jerk), lifted 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk for a combined lift of 194kg.
She started with an 85kg lift in the snatch and went for 88kg on her second and third attempts but could not complete it. The effort placed her fifth in the snatch category.
In clean and jerk, the Indian clinched 109kg on her first try and opted to skip the next two attempts in order to protect herself from an injury.
Chanu’s only medal at the Asian Championships so far has come at the 2020 edition in Tashkent where she won a bronze for a total lift of 205kg, which included the world record clean and jerk of 119kg.
