Yasmin Finney, who plays fan-favorite Elle Argent on Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” will play a character named Rose on “Doctor Who,” BBC announced Monday. She will first appear in 2023, which will be the 60th anniversary of the cult sci-fi series.
Is she playing a version of Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, who was a companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors (Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant), or an entirely different character who also happens to be named Rose? Showrunner Russell T. Davies says we’ll have to wait to find that out.
“How can there be another Rose?” Davies said in a statement. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the ‘Doctor Who’ set. We all fell in love with her in ‘Heartstopper,’ one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

Although we still have quite a long wait for new episodes of the main Doctor Who series, there’s been plenty of new content to enjoy during the lockdown, including an ambitious multi-platform event. The Big Finish audio line is now set to achieve a landmark though by casting its first openly transgender companion for the Doctor, to be played by Rebecca Root as part of an adventure involving Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor.
There’ve been some trans characters in Doctor Who before, of course, including within the novel adaptation of “Rose” as well as Eleanor Blake in another Big Finish audio installment. In addition, trans writers have contributed to Doctor Who comics and novels, and Adèle Anderson has contributed voice talents, while Bethany Black became the first openly trans actress on the show back in season 9. Root’s casting, though, is more significant for making a transgender character...

The Doctor’s companions have been almost exclusively white over its 50-year history, and the Doctor himself has been nothing but white, so it's exciting to hear showrunner Steven Moffat putting some powerful words into the universe about steps toward better diversity. He's also expressed regret of the show's past failures and their stance going forward to make sure it doesn't happen again. The United Kingdom is a very diverse place so when a sci-fi series mostly set and filmed there can't replicate that diversity on screen, there's a big problem. And Moffat agrees. DoctorWhoTV has transcribed an interview with the creator from the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine. “We decided that the new companion was going to be non-white, and that was an absolute decision because we need to do better on that. We just have to," he said. "I don’t mean that we’ve done terribly...

warning: spoilers!
Doctor Who does found-footage… and it actually works in a way that most found-footage stories don’t even bother with anymore. It works because there’s a genuine rationale for someone — in this case, Rassmussen — to have assembled “extant” footage into something resembling a story. And that’s even before we learn that he has ulterior motives, and a secondary, hidden rationale for assembling the found footage. This is pretty brilliant. And it plays with our presumptions about genre, both about science fiction and found-footage: it’s because we’re so used to the idea of Sf soldiers wearing helmet cams that we don’t need to be told that the soldiers are wearing helmet cams. Which, of course, they aren’t. The “twist” reveal that there are no helmet cams works only because we automatically presumed that they were.
