Lost in the night
Every year, numerous films are made about the experiences of people living with mental health challenges, but they’re very rarely made by people who know what that feels like. Touched With Fire is an exception. It’s the story of a relationship that develops between two people who meet in a psychiatric institution and find themselves torn between the ecstasy of heightened emotion and the need to cope in the real world. Paul Dalio, who directs with remarkable confidence given that this is his first feature, used elements of his own story in developing the script. He hopes that the film will help other people to better understand what it means to be bipolar, and so far it’s proving a success.

In a world where having a mental disorder is treated as a hugely negative and stigmatized scenario, actor, writer, and director Paul Dalio hopes that his film, Touched With Fire, might help change people’s minds about people who are bipolar, and who have mental illnesses in general.
Starring Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby as title characters Carla and Marco, the film features two poets who are bipolar and fall in love in a hospital after getting into some trouble when trying to live on their own. Soon enough, they go through various stages of emotions and relationship statuses until they have to bring their relationship to light with their parents, played by Christine Lahti, Griffan Dunne, and Bruce Altman.

Touched with Fire asks whether love between two thirty-something adults with bipolar disorder can be successful, loosely wondering about the intersection of sensuality, realism, and mental illness. It seems interested to extract a rubric explaining the connection between people with mental illness who are creatives. The film meanders through this exploration rather than makes up its mind as a creative drama or a serious character study where we could feel immediate pathos for the couple’s suffering and willfully involve ourselves in their situation (which could be an educational, engrossing filmic experience if well-presented). Contemporary films about mental illness such as Girl, Interrupted and A Beautiful Mind achieve this by stripping away characters’ “faces,” showing them as raw and realistic from the beginning. Disappointingly, this doesn’t happen in Touched with Fire. It takes time before New York City poets Carla (Katie Holmes) and Marco (Luke Kirby) approach identities more recognizably meaningful,...

Chicago – How do you explain air? That is what our thoughts are, after all – carbon-based cells interacting with circumstantial environment, sending the “message.” What if those cells send the thought receiver something outside “normal”? This is the exploration in the new film ‘Touched With Fire.’

This is narrative fiction, but it brings out another side of the debate regarding the mental condition, and the judgement associated with it. The main characters in the film have Bipolar Disorder. Now, notice the word “disorder” – out of order, not orderly. The medical profession has defined the Bipolar condition is an anomaly. “Touched With Fire” seeks to take back the disorderly part of that definition, and doe it through the story of two people who take it to another place. There are clichés in the film, and scenes that were a bit too cute, but the writer/director Paul Dalio actually has Bipolar condition,...

Chicago – The status of individual mental acuity and control is like the fingerprint of the brain. There are disorders that have been diagnosed, which alters that fingerprint into different types of behavior. A new film, “Touched with Fire” – directed by Paul Dalio and featuring lead actor Luke Kirby – seeks to bridge an understanding of Bipolar Condition, the particular mental journey of highest (and ultra-creative) highs and mind numbing lows.
That was a one sentence attempt at trying to explain a complex state of being – an affected individual’s behavior is like a snowflake, different in all. In his new film “Touched With Fire,” writer/director Paul Dalio seeks to provide normalization to the Bipolar nature, in a fictional narrative. Actor Luke Kirby, a TV and film journeyman, has a career defining performance as Marco, a writer who goes from independence to institutions to his parent’s home, never seemingly under control.

Two powerful performances dominate the new film Touched With Fire, which examines the sometimes blurry line between genius and madness. Carla (Katie Holmes, who also co-produced) and Marco (Luke Kirby, seen recently on TVs Rectify) are two creative and restless poets who are also bi-polar. They each display an almost obsessive need to write and perform their verse at local poetry bars. After a chance meeting attending group therapy in the mental ward of a hospital, the two find in each other a kindred spirit with a common bond—the burning need to create.
Though not really a film version of the book Touched With Fire, the film is informed by the basic themes of that work. Published in 1993, and subtitled “Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament,” Touched With Fire was written by Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University.

The title of Kay Jamison’s book, Touched With Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament, doesn’t exactly scream “movie version,” but writer-director Paul Dalio has been blessed with an intriguing premise and two superb leading actors in Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby to make Touched With Fire a stirring and engaging film. Roadside Attractions is rolling it out in theaters slowly with about 25 more markets and 60 theatres this coming weekend. It will be…...

Depicting mental illness in film is hard for two reasons. One is the fact that actors are playacting. This may not be the case across the board—performances could be inferred from personal experience—but I’d say a majority comes from a place of research and mimicry. The second reason deals with audiences having preconceived notions about mental illness that are generally misguided. It’s difficult to show someone an honest portrayal when they don’t believe it’s honest. Perhaps filmmakers shouldn’t care about this subsection of viewers because they’re walking that line for the afflicted so they can see they aren’t alone. Expand that circle to include individuals willing to learn and replace false truths and you find those who Paul Dalio hopes appreciate Touched With Fire.

People living with mental illness often strive to not allow their disease define who they are, and how they fit into society. However, the way they contend with their treatment often demonstrates what type of person they really are, and who they wish to become. That all-to-important sentiment is emotionally and powerfully presented in first-time feature film writer and director Paul Dalio’s new romantic drama, ‘Touched with Fire.’ The filmmaker, who has powerfully discussed his own personal struggles with bipolar, has commendably presented the physical and emotional struggles people often face as they determinedly try to manage the disease. After shooting ‘Touched with Fire’ in New York City in 2013, [ Read More ]

What role does mental illness — particularly bipolar disorder — play in creativity and art? Does experiencing the dramatic highs and lows of the illness fuel creation, and does treatment of symptoms dampen that artistic energy? Freshman filmmaker Paul Dalio’s “Touched with Fire” explores the romance between two poets with the affliction. Forces both internal and external drive the couple together and apart as they struggle to write, love, and survive. Carla (Katie Holmes) begins the film at a low point, unenthusiastically reading her book of poetry to a small, uninvolved group at an event. She is quickly consumed by the desire to figure out what triggered her initial manic episode shortly after college, which leads her to accidentally check herself into a facility under the care of her psychiatrist. After intending just to spend a single night there while doing research in her paperwork, she is not allowed to leave the next morning.

Earnest. Very, very earnest. And sincere; very, very sincere. And beyond that, what can one say about a film that deals so nakedly with a very serious illness -- point out it has pimples? Touched With Fire, originally titled Mania Days when it debuted at ">SXSW last year, is an earnest and sincere character study of two people dealing with bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. Paul Dalio wrote and directed the film, influenced by his own past struggles with the condition, which can cause radical shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. Carla (Katie Holmes) and Marco (Luke Kirby) meet cute in a support group at a hospital. They've both been confined at the psychiatric facility and are unhappy about it, though it...

Matt Lauer had no choice but to address the elephant in the room. On Tuesday, the Today co-host interviewed Katie Holmes, who plays a poet struggling with bipolar disorder in director/screenwriter Paul Dalio's fim Touched With Fire. Given his tense interview in 2005 with her ex-husband Tom Cruise, in which they debated the merits of pharmaceutical drugs, Lauer asked Holmes how she felt taking on such a dramatic role. "This was a huge challenge and one that I felt pressured to create an authentic character," Holmes said, "because so many people do suffer and I wanted to bring a realistic portrayal to the role." "But you can't just read about something like that," Lauer told Holmes, who...

"Are we a mistake, Carla? Are we a mistake?" Roadside Attractions has debuted the first trailer for Paul Dalio's indie romantic drama Touched With Fire (formerly known as Mania Days when it premiered at SXSW), starring Katie Holmes as a manic depressive who falls "crazy in love" with someone just like her. At the psychiatric hospital she meets a fellow bipolar patient, played by Luke Kirby, and they end up on a "passionate, yet unhealthy love affair". This looks much more powerful and beautiful than I was expecting, especially in the final 30 seconds of this trailer, so give it a chance and let it play all the way to the end. After the premiere, we had the chance to sit down with the film’s director, Paul Dalio. During the course of our interview, we discussed why he wanted to tell this story, how he prepared to shoot, what his methods are for working with actors, and much more.
Check it out below and enjoy!

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

Katie Holmes has maintained a relatively low-key persona in the aftermath of her divorce from Tom Cruise last summer, but now she's getting back to business with her first movies since 2011's "Jack and Jill" and the ReelzChannel miniseries "The Kennedys." Photos from the set of one of those movies -- the upcoming "Mania Days" -- have surfaced, featuring Holmes dashing through a fountain with co-star Luke Kirby while clad in a wet T-shirt.
"Mania Days" depicts two manic depressives who meet in a psychiatric ward and embark on a romance. The movie is written and directed by Paul Dalio, who made his feature-film debut with the 2012 Bulgarian movie "Faith, Love and Whiskey." Spike Lee serves as a producer.

Katie Holmes got soaked on the set of upcoming movie Mania Days while wearing denim shorts and a pale T-shirt in a public New York park yesterday (May 21).
The 34-year-old actress was pictured laughing and joking with co-star Luke Kirby as they frolicked in a fountain while shooting scenes for the Spike Lee-produced film in Washington Square Park.
Holmes and Take This Waltz actor Kirby play manic depressives who meet in a psychiatric hospital and later fall in love in the romantic drama written and directed by Paul Dalio.
It was recently reported that Holmes, whose divorce from Tom Cruise was finalised in August 2012, has been "hit on" by members of the film's crew, with a source telling Page Six: "They were crew members and extras just chancing it. It really got on the nerves of director Paul Dalio. Needless to say, she said no to everyone."

Katie Holmes sure seems to be having fun. First she popped up at the Met Gala with a fauxhawk and showing a little sideboob, embracing her punk rock side.
Now she's working on a movie in New York City and seems to be having a blast. Holmes stars with Luke Kirby in "Mania Days," and Tuesday (May 21) called for them to film a scene playing around in a fountain at Washington Square Park.
Of course, it could also just be the most clever excuse a director could ever use to get Katie frolicking around in a wet T-shirt. Paul Dalio, the director, seems legitimate though, so it probably has something to do with the story.
In "Mania Days," Katie and Luke play Carla and Marco, two manic depressives who meet in a psychiatric hospital and begin a romance. After this movie, Holmes jumps into her next project, "Responsible Adults," with co-star Chace Crawford.

“Cinema Six” is the definition of average, which is strange considering it was probably the most pumped film at the festival. You couldn’t walk an inch in the press lounge without stepping on one of their little yellow adverts. To begin with, it’s obviously Mark Potts’ first film, as narratively, it’s derivative of so many other, better, things. A lot of the emotional ennui that the filmmakers are trying to convey about working at a movie theater, particularly one that feels so run down and little visited – something that, yes, I can currently attest to as a popcorn pusher in my spare time – are culled from “Clerks” in a way that’s a little too far in the direction of laziness rather than homage.
