- He considered a career in medicine after serving as a surgical technician in the Navy during WWII. He took pre-med courses at Long Beach Community College, but struggled and dropped out. He also took an art class, and the instructor told him that he had a future in art.
- He was an abstract expressionist painter, one of the founding members of the post-WWII "Cool School" who helped transform Los Angeles into a major draw in the modern art world. Other members included John Altoon, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, and Ed Ruscha.
