A fascinating trend has been cropping up in mainstream filmmaking over the last 20 years, specific to major male directors who are widely considered to be technological pioneers. From James Cameron to Steven Spielberg to Peter Jackson, a good number of cinematic titans have not only embraced new advances in filmmaking, but they’ve become obsessed with them. You could probably argue that any auteur gets that way thanks mostly to obsession, so this shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Think of Cameron, who was, for a long time, utterly single-minded in his devoted relationship to the Hms Titanic, first making the massively successful 1997 epic with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Then he made IMAX movies about the Titanic, such as Ghosts of the Abyss. Finally, in 2009, he moved on,...

Having the very unfortunate disposition of costing $150 million to make, and only bringing back $38 million worldwide in return, Walt Disney's Mars Needs Moms can be considered one of the biggest flops of all time...and that, my friends, is not a good thing to have hovering over you. But is the movie really as bad as this monumental flop indicates, or are there redeeming qualities worth seeking out?
The movie follows Milo, (performance captured by Seth Green, voiced by Seth Robert Dusky), a normal everyday boy who has a bit of an argument with his mother (Joan Cusack). As most boys would,...

Chicago – Sometimes all a film needs is a bad title to repel audiences. “Mars Needs Moms” is based on the Berkeley Breathed picture book of the same name, which derived its own title from the 1966 film, “Mars Needs Women.” Even as an obscure homage, the title falls flat, and most certainly could’ve been replaced. Yet that’s not the only reason why this woefully overlooked film became one of the biggest box office bombs in history.
“Moms” was the last film released by the Disney-owned studio ImageMovers Digital run by Robert Zemeckis, who broke ground with his early motion capture efforts beginning with 2004’s “The Polar Express.” Yet Zemeckis and his team have never been able to compete with the vastly superior work from Weta Digital, the studio behind “Lord of the Rings” and “Avatar.” Whereas the features on Zemeckis’s characters often appear embalmed, there actually seems to...

Mars Needs Moms is the latest motion-capture animation film from Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers Digital production studio, and is an adaptation of Berkeley Breathed’s beloved children’s novel.
The film centers on Milo, a young boy who gains a deeper appreciation for his mum after Martians come to Earth and take her away to harvest her mothering prowess for their nanny bots.
Simon and Wendy Wells have penned a screenplay that is so devoid of magic and charm that it ultimately lacks an engaging narrative, three-dimensional characters or any humour. It often resorts to thrill ride antics, detached action and a lot of racing around in the desperate hope of evoking some enjoyment, but falls flat on its face in the process.
Aside from attempting to convey a very well hidden message about children devoting more time and attention to their parents, it’s an altogether impersonal experience. The script,...

Mars Needs Moms ** ½
Stars: Seth Green, Joan Cusack, Dan Fogler, Elisabeth Harnois | Written by Simon Wells, Wendy Wells | Directed by Simon Wells
The last film from Robert Zemeckis’s Image Movers Digital (the studio that gave us Beowulf, A Christmas Carol and the very creepy The Polar Express), Mars Needs Moms is a lacklustre family sci-fi which unfortunately ensures that the studio goes to its rest with a whimper rather than a bang.
Milo (Seth Green, with Seth Dusky’s voice) is a typical nine year old who resents taking the garbage out, tidying his room and eating broccoli. After been scolded by his long-suffering mum (Joan Cusack), he blurts out that his life would be much better without her but quickly changes his mind when she gets whisked away in an alien spacecraft. Managing to stow away on board, he teams up with a hyperactive human hacker named Gribble...

Disney is sending box office blunder Mars Needs Moms, produced by Robert Zemeckis, straight to DVD. It's no wonder after debuting with a paltry $6.9 million opening weekend gross when debuting on March 11th, from a big $150 million budget. It's easy to mock though, but sad news when hard work and money spent doesn't pay. It must be a sinking feeling that I would never like to experience to such a massive effect as this animated family adventure has. A statement issued was issued on Wednesday gave no further details, but the Seth Green, Dan Fogler, Joan Cusack, Elisabeth Harnois and Mindy Sterling-voiced film has struggled at the international box office as well. The film has turned in a mere $7.8 million from overseas sales. Simon Wells, known for films like The Time Machine starring Guy Pearce and animated The Prince of Egypt, directed and wrote the script alongside Wendy Wells for Mars Needs Moms.

You get Joan Cusack. You get aliens. You get Seth Green. But you don't get a lot of entertainment. Here's our review of Mars Needs Moms...
Milo is your average American kid. He loves zombies, but hates taking out the trash. After a particularly nasty blow-up with his mother (Mom as played by Joan Cusack), Milo tells his mother he thinks his life would be better off without her, and he goes to bed angry while mom cries. Fortunately, Milo has a change of heart, but before he can apologize to his mother, there's a little complication: Mom gets kidnapped by Martians!
You see, it's time to reprogram the nanny bots that raise Martian children, and to do that they need a fresh mother every 15 years or so. To do that, the Martians find and kidnap a qualified Earth mother, but the Martians will soon find out that Milo is no ordinary kid,...

Somewhere within the useless mess of Mars Needs Moms lies a half-hearted message about the importance of the family unit and how, when it comes to raising children in an optimal environment, fathers are just as important as mothers. Oddly, Walt Disney Pictures chose to portray this essence of humanity by bringing its actors to life (in a manner of wishful thinking, anyway) through the performance-capture fetish of producer Robert Zemeckis (director of such hellish visual creations as The Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol) and his ImageMovers Digital studio. The end result is, at best, entirely creepy and, at worst, an utter disaster of filmmaking.
Director Simon Wells and his co-screenwriter, Wendy Wells, adapt the children's novel by Berkeley Breathed, but the story only outlines a threadbare foundation that serves to spur the plot into action. Like most human children, young Milo (based upon the movements of Seth Green...

Chicago – “Mars Needs Moms” is an animated epic that takes its time to build toward the message, but the path to that real emotion is decorated with spectacular imagery and sprightly comedy. It’s Mom, apple pie and motion capture technology.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Going the same route as “Avatar,” but creating a more cartoon feel, Mars Needs Moms uses motion capture – the actors performing in specially designed outfits on which their animated characters will be applied to in post production – as a way to create a Planet Mars that needs a lesson. The landscape of this lesson is breathtaking, another breakthrough in design and function. The story gets in the way a bit, but evens the score with a exciting ending.
Milo (crisply voiced by Seth Green) is a pre-pubescent boy who hates taking out the garbage and feels he is put upon by his demanding mother (Joan Cusack). After another argument,...

Movie Review of Mars Needs Moms: Seth Green acts up as boy hero in sci-fi adventure (3 out of 5 stars) mars needs moms reviewAuthor and illustrator Berkeley Breathed may be best known for his satirical comic strips Bloom County and Opus but he shows a sentimental side and a strong knack for child wonderment with his 2007 children's book Mars Needs Moms! A movie adaptation featuring the latest in performance-capture technology sounds fantastic until the movie unfolds and fans of the book, especially Breathed’s zany illustrations, wonder how director Simon West and producer Robert Zemeckis fumble much of the book’s energy and fun. Wells, his wife and co-writer Wendy Wells, Rob Muir and Bob Hilgenberg adapt the Breathed book. It's surprisingly underwhelming despite its wonderful premise about a boy fighting aliens in order to save his mother. With a sputtering story that never rockets to life, one has the...

I’m going to begin by saying that I’m approaching this review for Disney’s Mom Needs Mars from a Mom P.O.V. – this is the kind of movie I’d like my kids to see. In director Simon Wells’ (The Time Machine, The Prince Of Egypt) adaptation of Berkeley Breathed’s book “Mars Needs Moms, we meet 9-year-old Milo (Seth Green). He has comic books to read, zombie movies to watch and bed-jumping to do. He doesn’t have time to eat his vegetables and do chores, no matter what his mom says. Mom (Joan Cusack) is sick of nagging, and Milo’s sick of Mom. Her good intentions and loving ways may not please Milo, but they certainly impress the Martian scouts who are looking for a good mom. But when he suggests moments later that he’d be better off without her, that’s when things get a little hairy.

Milo is a mouthy kid who doesn’t like eating vegetables. Mom is a struggling homemaker attempting to get said mouthy kid to eat those damn vegetables and take out the trash without yet another sassy reply from her offspring. It’s a standard set-up, a nice slice of suburban life – that is, until a Martian spaceship lands in their backyard and abducts Mom to the red planet. In a desperate attempt to save his mother, Milo (Seth Green, as voiced by Seth Dursky) ends up inadvertently hitching a ride on that Mars-bound spaceship, and it’s up to Milo and some unexpected allies to save his mom (Joan Cusack) from the dastardly deeds the Martians are planning to exact on his mother, all...

Disney’s most recent digitally animated endeavor, “Mars Needs Moms,” directed by Simon Wells (“The Prince of Egypt,” “The Time Machine”) and produced by Robert Zemeckis, lacks the imagination and wonder that Disney usually represents. The film centers on Milo (Seth Green), a young boy whose mother (Joan Cusack) is selected for abduction by the all-female alien race of Martians. Milo rushes after the spaceship as it whisks her away and ends up on Mars where he must save his mother and in doing so, save the Martians as well. The story line is sweet: The Martians do not have families, and through Milo’s adventures he shows them that they can — and should.

Disney has released the first trailer for its upcoming Mars Needs Moms, based on the book by Bloom County author and illustrator Berkeley Breathed. It follows a young boy (voiced by Seth Green) who stows away on a space ship after his mom (Joan Cusack) is abducted. The boy gets help from the tech-savvy, underground earthman "Gribble" (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl "Ki" (Elisabeth Harnois).
The animation in the trailer doesn't look much like Breathed's original artwork, instead looking more like the (often creepy) motion-captured animation of The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol. This comes as no surprise — the director of those movies, Robert Zemeckis, is producing. Simon Wells (Balto) directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Wendy Wells.
