Hulu’s official trailer for High Hopes introduces the central players of this unscripted series set in the cannabis industry. The six-episode season premieres, of course, on 4/20, and was executive produced by Jimmel Kimmel.
“High Hopes is a workplace reality series following Belarus-born brothers Slava and Mishka, and their stoned crew through the trials and tribulations of taking their cannabis business to new heights,” reads Hulu’s synopsis. “As one of the oldest cannabis dispensaries in Hollywood, Mmd attracts a wild mix of weed-loving customers and is a home away from home for their Og employees who work hard and smoke harder! This season builds to their biggest day of the year—4.20—as the gang attempts to expand nationwide and release their own top-shelf cannabis brand. Will they find what they’re looking for or will their hopes go up in smoke?”
The series stars Mishka Ashbel, Slava Ashbel, Jared Brady,...

The titular gentleman of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat played with sprightly joie de vivre by an enthusiastic Ewan McGregor. An aesthete with impassioned opinions about wine pairings, Rostov was born to live the life of leisure handed down to him by his landowning ancestors. The problem is that Rostov is a man unfit for his time. Before he can assume management of his family’s country estate, the Russian Revolution rudely intervenes. A populist poem from his student days spares Rostov the firing squad, relegating him instead to a lifetime of house arrest in Moscow’s fictional Metropol hotel.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Amor Towles, “A Gentleman in Moscow” follows Rostov through the doors of the Metropol and stays there through decades of Russian history, from the formation of the Soviet Union to Stalinist repression to World War II and beyond.

Hotels are strange, contradictory, but often wonderful places. They are permanent structures primarily designed for temporary lodging. They can offer more luxurious furniture and amenities than you get at home, yet you’ll rarely sleep as well as you do in your own bed. Dreams in hotels tend to be weirder and more vivid — there’s a reason so many of Tony Soprano’s more memorable nightmares either occurred while he was at a hotel, or depicted his unconscious self staying in one — and the setting is evocative enough to...

Amor Towles’s A Gentleman in Moscow was published in 2016, five years before Russia’s top opposition leader (and Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe) Alexei Navalny returned to his homeland and was immediately imprisoned. Showtime’s eight-part adaptation of Towles’s novel, about a Navalny-like political prisoner in Russia, serendipitously makes its premiere not long after Navalny died in a Russian prison camp. But the comparisons between reality and fiction largely end there. A Gentleman in Moscow is a glossy, romanticized series that mostly suggests rather than shows the horrors of a totalitarian regime.
The story of the show echoes Navalny’s with its occasionally tin-eared, though still potent, portrayal of an unlikely dissident who refuses to abandon his country but has limited means to fight for it. In 1921, the perky-mustached Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is given a life sentence by a Soviet court for vague counterrevolutionary reasons. But instead of a gulag,...

There were a few things I turned over in my mind for April Fool's jokes. That I would be taking leave from Pajiba immediately to become part of the "Quiverfull" movement with my new fiance, Saul, who believes the internet to be powered by demons and inappropriate for women folk. That I was actually a 55 year old male shut in who'd managed to create and maintain a false internet identity by using photos of his niece. That I'd received a request from Katherine Heigl's publicist to let her do the column for the evening to help "rehabilitate" her image and and accepted. Eventually, though, I realized it's a big enough joke that someone who gets only basic cable and who doesn't own a DVR or Tivo is writing a column about TV. Here's what's on tonight:
8:00 p.m.: "Bones" on Fox. Fifth season spring premiere. Woohoo!
"Flash Forward" on ABC.

In late December, Matthew McConaughey and Mishka were holed up in a cozy studio in Santa Monica, California, putting the finishing touches on a new album by Mishka, the first artist signed to McConaughey's J.K. Livin' label. The duo offered MTV News a rare glimpse into the recording process, allowing us to document the actual session — not just a re-creation of what they did before our cameras arrived.
The guys were laying down the final track of the album, "Stars Will Be Shining," a fitting title for the journey that connected Mishka and McConaughey in the first place. In a truly "stars were aligned" kind of story, McConaughey heard Mishka's music while vacationing in Jamaica in 1999. The actor liked Mishka's brand of roots reggae-meets-folk rock so much that...
