Ashiq Hussain was born in 1924. In 2014, at age 90, he was in poor health but still living near the famous Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore, Pakistan. He first shot to fame with his big musical hit movie in the Punjabi language- Jabroo (1956).In this movie,Ashiq Hussain was to create a Sufi Dhamaal tune with song lyrics by the poet Saghir Siddiqi that was so durable that it stayed popular for over 50 years and was later copied and redone by many music directors like Nazir Ali for film Dilan De Sauday (1969)in Pakistan.This film song was sung by Noor Jehan.Then famous Indian music director Kalyanji-Anandji redid it for his film in India- Aik Se Barhkar Aik (1976)which was sung by Runa Laila."Dama dam mast qalander-lal meri pat rakhio bala" was this long lasting Dhamaal song.Then he composed music for Waris Shah (1964) and many other films.Then came his musical super-hit movie Dhiyan Namanian (1973) whose film songs were based on traditional folk tunes of the Punjab.His active years were 1956-1975.His melodious music still is popular and lives on in Pakistan.
