The nineties might not have been the best era when it comes to horror movies. Some will disagree but for me, the amount of top quality horror from that decade is minimal. But that doesn’t stop that time period from being very nostalgic for me. The decade of movie son VHS and music on cassette is when I became a teenager, so any movie set at this time immediately piques my interest.
Rent-a-Pal follows David in 1990. A lonely guy who is stuck in his life of caring for his elderly mother who is suffering from dementia. But after six months using a video dating service, he discovers a videotape named Rent-a-Pal. Becoming addicted to this VHS friend who gives him someone to talk to and interact with, things do begin to look more positive,...

The origin of the drama Buoyancy can be traced back to when Australian filmmaker Rodd Rathjen came across an article a few years ago about Cambodian workers and their life on a Thai fishing trawler. He became riveted by the unbelievable story and upon more research, he said in a statement: “The scale of modern slavery and exploitation in Thailand is vast and hard to grasp.”
Written and directed by Rathjen, Buoyancy follows a spirited Cambodian teenager Chakra (Sarm Heng) who works the rice fields with his family but is looking for independence. He seeks the help of a local broker who said that they can get him paid work in a Thai factory. He heads to Thailand in hopes to find his fortuitous independence but when he gets there, he and his newfound friend Kea (Mony Ros), discover they’ve been duped. Exclusive: IFC Midnight has acquired the North American rights to Jon Stevenson’s thriller Rent-a-Pal. The film will be released in September.
Inspired by the real-life VHS tape, Rent-a-Friend: The Original Companion, Rent-a-Pal is set in 1990 and follows a lonely bachelor named David (Brian Landis Folkins). In a pre-Tinder media era, David is looking to find an escape from the day-to-day drudgery of caring for his aging mother (Kathleen Brady). While seeking a partner through a video dating service, he discovers a strange VHS tape called Rent-a-Pal bosted by a charismatic gentleman named Andy (Wil Wheaton). The tape offers him much-needed company, compassion, and friendship but Andy’s friendship comes at a cost — and David is desperate to pay that price. Amy Rutledge also stars.
“It’s an honor to have my directorial debut released on IFC Midnight,” said Stevenson. “Their history of high-quality genre entertainment has directly inspired my work.

The horrors of Hollywood strike again. After last years hit Frightfest flick Starry Eyes, which took a very supernatural look at the price of fame; comes 2014′s other L.A. set terror tale, Eat; a more visceral look at the perils of fame and the price people pay in the pursuit of it. To top it all off, she’s developed a disturbing self-harm habit for coping with stress – she bites herself and eats her own flesh.

Tagline: "The Story of a Girl Who Finds Herself - And Then Eats Herself." Eat is a film from Pretty People Pictures. This horror title was recently released through video-on-demand, via Google Play, Amazon and others. In the film, an aspiring actress develops a strange eating disorder, which leaves her in pieces. Eat, from director Jimmy Weber, creates a disturbing tone as the character Novella (Meggie Maddock) gnaws through her own body. She even goes back for seconds and thirds. As well, a trailer for the film was released late last year, but some indie horror fans might have missed it; the clip is hosted below. For more on the story, Novella is facing a stark reality. She is nearing her 30s, in Los Angeles as an acting hopeful. Not likely to act ever again, Novella's desperation turns into anxiety and then into a hunger for human flesh - her own!

Written and directed by Jimmy Weber and produced by Annie Baker, Eat marks the feature length debut for both filmmakers after their short film Incubator left its bloody footprint on the 2011 film festival circuit (Fantastic Fest 2011, Fantasia 2011, Screamfest 2011). The film will premiere this fall.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Why Watch? I caught this short at Fantastic Fest when it played in 2011, and I’m glad it’s finally online because it deserves to be seen by a wider audience. The hook here is a young man (Luke Sorge) waking up in a bathtub full of ice, staring down at bloodied instruments in a sink and trying to maintain his sanity while a massive staple job runs up his side. But if this is your normal snatch-and-grab liver job, why are the doors and windows barred shut? Jimmy Weber‘s intense little horror flick plays off of the aggressive physicality of Sorge’s performance (as well as some well place atonal music) to put you in the sweaty boxer shorts of the guy going through the unthinkable. While it’s admittedly minimal when it comes to story, it makes up for it with a gruesome bit of practical effects and a self-surgery that’s difficult to...

About three weeks ago, I wrote an article announcing Shadowlocked's involvement in this year's Telluride Horror Show and my role as 'Master Host'. Some of you have been wondering what films will be on tap for those in attendance, and lemme tell ya, there are some real doozies. Whether their horror tastes lie with the moody and atmospheric or with over the top fountains of gore, fright fans will find that the Horror Show has something for everyone this year.
Back by popular demand is the extremely popular horror/comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of last year's Horror Show crown jewels returning for a repeat performance. Also on tap is The Tunnel, an Australian horror in the 'found footage' genre. Director Carlo Ledesma and producers Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey will be in attendance. Making their United States debuts are shoot-o-rama The Scarlet Worm and tournament-style gorefest Monster Brawl.

The 11th annual Coney Island Film Festival, running Sept. 23-25, offers an exquisite blend of freak show, burlesque and cinematic oddities, featuring movies about reformed gang members, unwitting superheroes, rock ‘n’ roll heaven and tons and tons of short films.
The fest opens with the portrait of a real-life Coney Island badass, Keith Suber, a reformed gang member who now teaches kids that violence isn’t the solution to their problems in the documentary The Last Immortal, directed by Charles Denson.
However, the highlight of the festival — in Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s opinion — is the headbangin’ documentary Heavy Metal Picnic by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn, which beautifully relives the glory days of ’80s era rock ‘n’ roll Maryland in all its raucous glory. Featuring footage from an outrageous backwoods farm concert and a reunion among its (slightly) more mature participants. Read the official Bad Lit documentary review here.

When it comes to selecting which movies you are going to put in your film festival, some organizers are better than others. Judging by the announcement of first wave of films to be screened at the Second Annual Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado, these guys know their shit!
With a schedule that will boast over 20 features and 20 shorts, this is just the beginning, but I'm impressed already…Chillerama, Helldriver, a killer baseball pitcher film And Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Yeah, I'm impressed.
And not only are you getting a killer film line-up, Telluride itself is amazing! A former silver mining town set in a box canyon in southwest Colorado, it's the perfect Shining-esque, Overlook Hotel setting for a horror film festival. To-Hell-You-Ride, Colorado. Oh yeah!
I know it's a full schedule when the ol' carpel tunnel syndrome starts acting up while I write and format the film list.

The Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is, once again, set to push the boundaries of modern horror with their sixth annual edition that will run for four terrifying nights on Oct. 13-16 at the Artisphere theater in Washington, D.C.
For the opening night event on Oct. 13, Spooky Movie proves its international flair with the over-the-top Japanese zombie gorefest and action flick Helldriver, directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura, which will have two screenings, one for the early birds at 7:00 p.m. and one for the late-night crowd at 10:00 p.m.
The closing night film on the 16th is also an international affair: Joe Bauer’s The Killage, an Australian horror comedy that sends up the teen camp counselors slasher genre. Plus, there will be several Aussie short films accompanying this final feature.

Fantastic Fest Announces List Of Short Films which includes must sees ‘Cop Hard’ and ‘Infernal Nuns’
The complete list of short films screening at Fantastic Fest has been announced. Unfortunatly as with most short films, there isn’t too much known about many of these. I know Infernal Nuns recieved a lot of praise from various blogs after it screened at Fantasia and Cop Hard is based on the popular web series, but apart from that, I’m pretty much in the dark. What I do know is that sometimes the short films are more rewarding than some features. Remember folks, some of these directors may go on to do some very big things in the near future, so try and check them out. Here is the press release.
