Muhammad Kilau bin Rasu, popularly know as ‘Mat Kilau’, or alternatively known as Mohamed bin Ibrahim or ‘Mat Siam’, was a local chieftain and folk hero from Pahang, Malaysia, best known for his role in the Pahang Uprising (1891-1895) against the British Empire. The exceptional valor demonstrated by Mat Kilau in the uprising have gained him a place in popular memory as one of the heroes of Malay nationalism. Syamsul Yusof directs a martial arts film based on the historical character, in a movie that is as one-sided as all the recent action movies we have seen throughout the world, from “Top Gun” to “Wolf Warrior”.
The film begins in 1890 in Pahang, as the British arrive in the area. Their greed, their violent ways, and their will to disrupt the Islamic ways of the locals become evident from the introductory scene, which ends up in bloody violence as...

Malaysian historical action movie Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan, directed by Syamsul Yusof, has become the highest-grossing local film of all time in the Asian country, breaking the record set by the director’s own horror film Munafik 2 in 2018.
Mat Kilau has grossed 11.97m (RM53m) in 13 days across Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. While the producers only announce figures for the three territories combined, local distributors say the film has easily overtaken Munafik 2, which grossed 8.5m (RM37.74m) in Malaysia and 10.8m (RM48m) across the region. It has achieved that figure despite going up against Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion and Minions: The Rise Of Gru at the Malaysian box office.
Produced by Studio Kembara and distributed by Skop Productions, Mat Kilau tells the story of a legendary 19th Century Malay warrior, Mat Kilau, who fought against British colonisers and their high taxes.

Will “Jailbreak 2” be a battle between two different styles of traditional Southeast Asian martial arts?
The question will be answered when the sequel hits the big screen! Though the exact release date is still unknown since it will only begin production in 2021.
The Hollywood Reporter brought word that director Jimmy Henderson will be back to helm the sequel, with Jean Paul Ly, Dara Our and Tharoth Sam returning to star.
Also joining them in the upcoming movie, which currently goes by the title “Jailbreak: Round 2”, are Indonesian martial arts stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
This won’t be the duo’s first gig together as they’ve both previously worked on Indonesia’s much praised “The Raid” franchise and Hollywood titles such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”.
Their inclusion in the movie could signal the involvement of Indonesia’s Silat. It...

There was a time not so long ago when - buoyed by the massive success of Syamsul Yusof's Kl Gangster - that producers talked boldly in public about how they intended to cast Thai martial arts star Tony Jaa in the sequel. That never happened but the point was made: Kl Gangster had opened its backers' eyes to the potential that a well made action film has to draw audiences both at home and abroad and their goals were larger than just the domestic audience.Well, Yusof and company are back with that promised sequel and it looks bigger in every way than the original. If there has ever been a more polished, larger scale action picture made in Malaysia then I certainly have no idea...

Chalk this up to wishful thinking on the part of Kl Gangster producer Datuk Yusof Haslam, assuming there's anything to it at all.An enormous local success, Kl Gangster packed theaters in Malaysia with enthusiastic audiences, a fact that has led to a sequel. A prequel, actually, so that they can keep popular characters who didn't make it to the end of the original, but you get the point: Successful film leads to increased budget and expectations on the follow up.Director Syamsul Yusof has reportedly invited prominent local actor Rosyam Nor to join the cast and according to local tabloid Berita Harian, Ong Bak star Tony Jaa has been offered a role as well.Tracking the story from this point is like a game of broken...

I like Malaysian cinema. Even when their movies are corny and campy, they’re still entertaining as hell. So it should come as absolutely no surprise that I’m all over director Syamsul Yusof’s upcoming action flick “Kl Gangster”. Sure, it looks a little low budget and the story isn’t anything we haven’t seen before, but the fights look spectacular. And at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters to me. As I’ve said before, when it comes to martial arts movies, I’m extremely easy to please. If case you were wondering, here are some plot details: “Kl Gangster” tells the tale of two brothers who get involved in the world of gangsterism. The older brother Malek (Aaron Aziz) was imprisoned for five years after being betrayed by his own gang which was started by Shark the step brother of the...

Syamsul Yusof is becoming Malaysia's king of popcorn movies. Yusof burst on to the scene in 2008 with racing picture Evolusi: Kl Drift, a film that openly pandered to fans of The Fast And The Furious but did it with enough style that it became a huge hit. A less successful unrelated action film followed before he returned to do Evolusi: Kl Drift 2 which was again a huge success. And while he's tucked a horror film between KL2 and the upcoming Kl Gangster it's very clear that action is where Yusof's heart lies.Kl Gangster tells the tale of two brothers who get involved in the world of gangsterism. The older brother Malek (Aaron Aziz) was imprisoned for five years after being betrayed by...

Malaysian actor/director Syamsul Yusof (‘Evolusi: Kl Drift 2’) is back with a new action flick - Kl Gangster - this time with a story revolving around Kuala Lumpur’s violent gang scene. You should know the drill with Malay movies by now, what they often lack in production values they make up for with sheer enthusiasm and Kl Gangster has plenty of it. Kl opens locally in Cinemas 9 June. Cue the Rock guitar soundtrack and on with the face pounding. Synopsis: "Kl Gangster" tells the tale of two brothers who get involved in the world of gangsterism. The older brother Malek (Aaron Aziz) was imprisoned for five years after being betrayed by his own gang which was started by Shark the step brother of the most influential gangster in Kuala Lumpur, King . Malek who leads a normal life after being released, is pulled back into the world he left behind after all those years.

Malaysia it seems just can’t get enough drugs, street violence, sex…oh yes and Drift Racing, with the news that Syamsul Yusof is set to release a sequel up to his 2008 hit action movie Evolution Kl Drift. Following directly after events of the first film, it seems like we can expect more of the same; Guys, guns, babes and very fast cars, but this time around they’ve also thrown a hefty revenge sub plot into the mix. Evolution 2 opens in Malaysia march 25th. Head to the official site to check out the action. Synopsis: A life of racing between Zack and Sham has not ended yet. Zack, an illegal racer before, now is a professional drifter. After the accident, Sham no longer drifts because of his broken leg and has to walk with the help of crutches. Then comes a female professional drifter named Aleeya . Joe, who managed...

I apologize for the headline on this one but this sudden spate of Malaysian film trailers is leaving me feeling rather silly.
In early 2008 Syamsul Yusof released his Evolusi Kl Drift into Malaysian theaters where, despite being rated 18+ it would go on to become a surprise hit. Clearly lifting elements of the Fast and the Furious franchise and transplanting them to his native country Yusof proved that fast cars are a language spoken around the globe and the only remaining question was when the sequel would arrive. Answer: March 25th.
More fast cars, more street violence, loads of gun play and some very nice cars being treated very, very badly indeed. Check the trailer below.
Racing life between Zack and Sham has not ended yet. Zack is not an illegal racer like before. Now he is a professional drifter. In the meantime after the accident occurred, Sham is no more...
