From the very beginning of “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” we knew something different was in store for this episode. Up until now “Discovery” has favored extended cold opens, delaying the opening credits for several minutes. But instead, following the always moving opening theme by Jeff Russo, “Discovery” took on a narrative device well-explored by other sci-fi franchises — including another “Star Trek” series — and managed to both utilize the fun, appealing elements of the trope while finding its own spin on the action.

Aliens Coming: The Musical Written by Joe Kelly Directed by Griffin Osborne Presented by Ashcat Productions at The People's Improv Theater, NYC August 17-September 18, 2017
To open Aliens Coming: The Musical, the disembodied head of an alien computer (Misha Brooks) provides one interpretive lens for the interspecies comedy to follow: high school students represent a microcosm of human beings' grievous overestimation of their own individual importance in the universe. Even before the titular extraterrestrials in Joe Kelly's play arrive, the particular place in the universe occupied by Clementine Tweedy (Alice Kors) is in a state of transition, placing her relationship with lifelong Bff Brandi Boudoir (Maia Scalia) into conflict with her recent integration into a crew of art kids (Rebecca Lampiasi, Ashley Hutchinson, and Tessa Stokes) led by Brooklyn (Ariana Raygoza), who signal their cool by pairing dresses with sneakers and cigarettes.

Before Scream turned the genre world on its head, there was another ’90s teen-centric horror movie revitalizing youth-oriented cinema. Featuring a cast of rising stars, killer effects, and a now iconic soundtrack, Andrew Fleming’s The Craft thoughtfully explored issues like high school politics, female empowerment, suicide, and the dangers of witchcraft when left in less-experienced hands.
More importantly, The Craft spoke out on the behalf of a generation of teenagers struggling to find their identity, and it continues to have an impact on new audiences. Over the years, the film has attracted a huge cult following and maintained its popularity amongst genre fans.
It may seem surprising that the decision to move forward on making The Craft wasn’t an easy sell for writer/director Fleming (Bad Dreams, Dick). “When we began prepping The Craft, the teen movie was dead,” explained Fleming. “Studios were under the impression that teens...
