When Donald Trump left his seat in the boardroom as the star of his long-running NBC reality series “The Apprentice” in 2015, in order to run for president of the United States, he had a clear successor in mind.
“I said, ‘The best person to hire would be Ivanka Trump,’” Donald Trump says. “I didn’t press it. But I felt Ivanka would have been by far the best person you could hire.”
Trump shares this revelation in a new book about his years as a reality star, “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass,” written by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. The book peels back the curtain on how Trump’s decade playing an all-knowing mogul on TV shaped his image as a politician, ultimately catapulting him to the White House.

Taylor Swift may have worn a glittering green gown by Gucci, but she found herself in a golden era Sunday, if only for a few hours, and what a time it was.
The superstar singer touched down at the Beverly Hilton for the 81st Golden Globes to honor a nomination in the new cinematic and box office achievement category for reinventing the rollout of concert documentaries (and smashing records in the process) courtesy of AMC’s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. Though she went home empty-handed — the inaugural trophy went to Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and the pink parade from Barbie, which earned north of a billion dollars and became a cultural phenomenon — Swift snagged the lion’s share of attention in a room filled with A-listers. (AMC also used the occasion to announce that the doc passed Michael Jackson’s This Is It to become the top-grossing concert doc of all time.

Adam Driver hit out at streaming services like Amazon and Netflix as he promoted his film “Ferrari” at Venice Film Festival on Thursday.
The actor stars as Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s drama. The film was granted a waiver as it was not produced under Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) contracts, allowing the cast to publicize the flick at the festival amid the ongoing actors and writers strikes.
During the press conference, Driver called out Amazon and Netflix for refusing to meet SAG-AFTRA’s demands, insisting: “I’m very proud to be here to be a visual representation of a movie that’s not part of the AMPTP and to promote the SAG leadership directive, which is an effective tactic, which is the interim agreement,” Variety reported.

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. spoke about the future of late-night TV at Variety and Rolling Stone’s Truth Seekers Summit, presented by Showtime, saying he believes studios don’t realize that the more they look to downsize shows, the more likely they will face stiff competition from TikTok creators and other social media stars who can retain the rights to their content.

Variety won 14 first-place awards Sunday night at the Los Angeles Press Club’s 65th annual SoCal Journalism Awards, more than twice as many as any other entertainment publication.
The 14 awards represented a historic high for Variety at the SoCal Journalism Awards, topping the previous best of 12 first-place prizes the magazine earned in 2018. Variety came into Sunday’s ceremony with a record 96 nominations, representing work published online and in print during the 2022 calendar year.
The awards were handed out during a gala dinner attended by hundreds in the historic Crystal Ballroom at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Several staffers won dual honors. Owen Gleiberman, Variety‘s chief film critic, won best obituary/appreciation for a look back at actor William Hurt, plus best online arts commentary for the column “Is ‘Tar’ Rooting for or Against Cate Blanchett’s Superstar Predator Conductor?” Chris Willman, senior writer and chief music critic,...

Stars posed up a storm on the amfAR Cannes gala red carpet on Thursday, but Leonardo DiCaprio, as per usual, chose to keep his entrance on the down low.
According to Variety, the “Titanic” actor made an appearance at the star-studded bash alongside his date for the evening; his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken.
DiCaprio — who came to Cannes for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiere — was said to have taken the back entrance into the bash to avoid attention.

HBO’s The Idol, which was co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, with the famed fest screening the first two episodes. And while it did receive a five-minute standing ovation, that reception is far from unanimous.
Lots of strong reactions to #TheIdol out of #Cannes2023 — ranging from “I hated it” to “the TV version of clickbait” to “I don’t need to see any more of Lily-Rose Depp naked.”

Yeah, The Idol has the Euphoria vibes you might expect but it’s really more like somebody put Black Swan, Succession, and Secretary in a blender and let it rip. Prepare yourself for quite the discourse… #cannes

One of the biggest premieres at this year’s Cannes Film Festival wasn’t for a movie but rather a TV show as audience members geared up to witness the first two episodes of what appears to be HBO’s next big event show, “The Idol.”
First reactions for the Sam Levinson-produced melodrama, which follows a young pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) who falls under the sway of a potentially dangerous nightclub promoter (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) are in, and they range anywhere from “a Pornhub-homepage odyssey starring Lily Rose Depp’s areolas and The Weeknd’s greasy rat tail” to “it’s really more like somebody put ‘Black Swan,’ ‘Succession’ and ‘Secretary’ in a blender and let it rip.”
One thing is clear, however, “Sam Levinson fans won’t be disappointed.”

‘The Idol’ First Reactions: A ‘Pornhub-Homepage Odyssey,’ ‘Prepare Yourself for Quite the Discourse’
Few new TV shows in recent memory have generated more mystique than “The Idol.” The music industry drama from Sam Levinson and The Weeknd (working under his real name Abel Tesfaye) attracted plenty of attention for its expensive reshoots and reported creative clashes, but its creators have always stood by their vision and insisted that the extra work was worth it.
The series stars Lily Rose-Depp as the world’s biggest pop star whose relationship with a sleazy guru (Tesfaye) leads her down a dark, cult-like path. In a recent interview, Levinson and Tesfaye explained that the show was inspired by the dark side of celebrity that Tesfaye had experienced when he rose to prominence as The Weeknd.
“Abel came to us with a pitch,” Levinson said. “He said something that I’ll always remember: ‘If I wanted to start a cult, I could.’ What he meant is that his...

Stuart Ford may have been named Variety’s Billion Dollar Producer, but the AGC Studios founder is already looking ahead to his next big milestone.
“We’ve raised more than $1.5 billion in production financing [over the last 17 years] and, the way our cinema business is evolving, who knows, in three or four years from now, I might be standing in front of you having achieved $1.05 billion at the box office!” said Ford.
The executive was feted by Variety at a May 19 cocktail reception in Cannes. Many of the super-producer’s business associates and partners, as well as industry friends, dropped by the Croisette villa to toast Ford, who was given the honor by Variety’s co-editor in chief Ramin Setoodeh.

Cate Blanchett kicked off her stilettos on Friday night as she took the stage a Cannes Film Festival party hosted by Variety and the Golden Globes. Because this is Cannes, where women are mandated to wear heels on the red carpet, shoes have become a political symbol on the French Riviera. And indeed, in this case, Blanchett went barefoot to make a statement — to stand in solidarity with the women of Iran. The A-list actor, on hand to present “Holy Spider” star Zar Amir Ebrahimi with a breakthrough artists award, grabbed the trophy and joked, “This is to stab everyone who stands in the way of women’s rights. Up the vajayjay!”
In her remarks, an emotional Ebrahimi called attention to her home country, which is “executing innocent people.” She said, “I always thought being an actress was a paradox: serving the emotions of your own and being a flag or mirror or light.

She’s replacing Maer Roshan who was ousted a month ago by bosses at parent company Engine Vision Media in what has been viewed as a shift in direction for the publication under newly-installed president and publisher Christopher Gialanella.
In confirming the hiring, Engine Vision’s press release noted that Halperin will be tasked with shaping Los Angeles‘ “vision for the future, with a particular emphasis on news and culture.” Furthermore, it stated that Halperin will “lead efforts to celebrate the city’s diversity while keeping current events, politics and sports related to the area relevant. ABC’s legendary sudser “General Hospital” is looking to defend its crown at the Daytime Emmys, landing 19 nominations this year — the most of any program — as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced contenders for the landmark 50th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
Last year, “General Hospital” was the big winner with five awards — including best daytime drama — as the telecast returned to a live, in-person event. This time out, NATAS first revealed multiple categories Tuesday night via various entertainment shows, and it looked like CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” — also in the middle of its 50th anniversary celebration — had taken an early lead.
But after all was tallied, CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” was actually next in line, with 14 nods, followed by “The Young and the Restless” (13), NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” (11) and the most-honored non-serial, the syndicated “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” also with 11.

Hollywood stars including Bill Murray, Claire Foy, and Rooney Mara were left stranded outside the 2023 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards when a fire marshal temporarily blocked access to the venue on Sunday night.
Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh posted video clips on Twitter showing hundreds of formally-attired actors and other attendees milling around at the Fairmont Century Plaza luxury hotel in central Los Angeles.
”Total chaos at the Saga wards as Claire Foy and Rooney Mara are not being allowed inside the ballroom of the Fairmont Hotel — they’re told they need to wait for the Fire Marshal to let them and hundreds of other guests inside,” said Mr Setoodeh.
The reporter later added: “Even Bill Murray has to wait. This is madness!”
It’s not yet clear what caused the blockage, but it appeared to be resolved by 5pm local time on Sunday.

Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” doesn’t have a trailer yet, but the overwhelming response to star Brendan Fraser, following a screening of the psychological drama at the Venice International Film Festival, is better promotion than any sizzle reel could buy.

Per Setoodeh, Fraser “sobbed” throughout the celebration and “tried to leave” but was forced to stay thanks to the raucous applause.
